Excessive oil consumption

With so many posts mentioning a fair amount of oil consumption....are there any Telly owners out there with some mileage on the clock that use minimum oil or don't add between oil changes?
Always change every 7,500 miles (+/- 200 miles, dependent on timing/appt availability) with full synthetic, and I have just under 51k miles. I would approximate 60-70% of that being city driving. Only since my last oil change (@ 44k miles) did I ever have to add any oil in between, where I added 1 quart about every 3k miles. I'm going in next week for my next oil change.

Maybe just me, but I didn't/don't find that unreasonable.

My 2020 Telluride has 62k miles and has received regular oil changes. It just recently started to feel like it was going to stall when I came to a stop. Shortly afterwards it started making a weird noise. No odors, no warning lights displayed. My husband decided to check the oil and it was literally dry. He had to add 4 quarts of oil before it even touched the dip stick. We have an appointment with the dealership in a week, but I’m afraid that they are going to blame this on not getting the vehicle serviced on a regular basis or that nothing is wrong with it. My biggest concern is the fact that the check engine light never came on which could have posed a serious risk to the vehicle or myself. I’d love to know if anyone has experienced similar issues.
I had the same experience with my 2013 Kia Sorento. No warning, just a slight knock in the engine. I was flabbergastedTo find my crankcase empty of oil. Later, after driving 500 miles, I find myself adding more oil. I've contacted NHTSA to make them aware of this safety issue and to acquire a case #.
I contacted KIA Customer Service and again got a case #. There is a class action suit and I want everything documented.

Adding my .02 here in this thread...

I've been consistent with my oil changes every 5K miles. I've completed all of them myself and have not had any issues with oil consumption like what a few folks here have commented.

What year and how many miles on your Telly?

We have had the same issue with ours, this is the second time, had to put 5.5 quarts in it! I have the oil changed regularly, this second time no warning light came on. I’m afraid that it has damaged the engine.
I also had this issue and took it for the “1,000 mile oil test” the first day I was told I had to leave my car (no loner car was given) and that it was 1&1/2 qt low. The second day I was called and told it’s only 1 qt low and under KIA guidelines that’s normal. Literally WTH

If i temember correctly, owners manual recommends checking oil level between oil changes as part of maintenance. So if we change oil at 7,500 miles, checking the oil level at 3-4k miles (or more frequent) will avoid too much loss of oil. It is acceptable to lose a quart every 1k miles but not more. Fortunately, most cars do not lose more than than. However, some will. Thanks.

New here, good thing you all suggested I check the oil level before I took ours into the shop. Ours started ticking valves today and an article said the valves use oil pressure to auto-adjust and take up any slack? Got to searching on here and saw the posts about excessive oil consumption. Sure enough, ours didn't even register on the dipstick. I put in 1.5 quarts and it barely touched it. One more quart and it's still below "low".

I've never had any car consume this much oil. It's not even due for an oil change yet but here it is, this low. I mean, lesson learned, I've got a monthly calendar reminder now to check it and keep it topped off, but burning through this much oil? I've owned 11 (yes, eleven) RX-7's, and they purposely burn oil to lube the apex seals, and I never saw oil consumption like this.

I'm planning on getting my initial 1,000 mile oil change done later this week at Kia. Problem is I'd love to be able to see the oil filter to view any possible shavings, but the chances are zero for that happening. I'd do the oil change myself (but my age has limited that) and I can't find anyone locally that I can use, so I'm kind of stuck. I can always ask for the old filter cartridge..... but don't want to get thrown out of the dealership! lol PS... I just hope the stealership actually changes the oil! Anyone know if they use Penzoil Synthetic or whatever brand synthetic the distributor brings them?

I doubt the dealership would fuss much if you asked for the old filter up front. I don't know about other states, but when we lived in Michigan, they were required to at least offer you your old broken parts when they replaced something.

Sometimes I feel I’m getting a little too old for this knd of task, too! I have back problems (surgery) and arthritis in my hands and knee. I just take my time (nice to be retired) and feel good that I can still do this (among other house chores) after more than 30 years of changing oils in all our previous vehicles—this Carnival is our ninth. They averaged 12-14 years which gives me some satisfaction when looking back. I changed the oil for the first time two weeks ago at 1,500 miles. I now have 2,400 miles. I share your concern on dealership’s use of quality oil (I use Pennzoil) and a few other things and this is why I still change my own oil and other fluids (those are still easy for me). Old habits die hard, I guess…Otherwise, I let the mechanics deal with the more complicated and heavier stuff.

I’ve asked them for my serpentine and timing belts (and throw them in the trunk) because they may be useful if I’m stranded away from “civilization”. Also weekends and holidays when we travel farther away—nice to have those old parts for emergency! Jist let the service person/mgr you want them back before leaving the car to them.

I have been changing my own oil before having a license. I use to help my dad.

Well, news flash. Mine is now rod knock. Just got this thing used 5 months ago, no indication of any problems until the FREAKING RODS START KNOCKING BECAUSE THEY BURN SO MUCH DAMN OIL.

Beyond pissed with Kia right now.

i am a new (<2500 miles) owner, so i have to ask: doesn't an "oil" light show on the dash to notify a low oil status?

Nope. Never even saw one. Verified even after I went in and checked the extremely low oil level.

Indeed concerning. I've had my oil changed as suggested every 7.5-5k miles with no issues, never had any mention about low oil when changing from the dealer. I was always under the assumption like my wife's Audi that a low oil warning would come on if there ever was an issue but it looks like it doesn't on this teched out Telluride! Sure, we can give you the ability to talk to passengers in the rear seat (never used) but put a sensor in the oil pan with a warning light, No way!!

my '13 subaru legacy has 226k and is chugging oil like a freshman at a frat party (1qt/500mi)

^^^this is a good question...has anyone has the low oil light come on yet?...are they all defective or is it set to come on at such a low level that you're screwed at the point when it does come on...in my car mentioned above i am about 1.2qt low when the light comes on...car takes about 5.2 during an oil/filter change

From what research I did, your only warning is a oil pressure light which could mean multiple things along with low oil. As I said before, other German cars would give you a nice add a quart indicator. The oil pressure light going off isn't quite a warning but an indicator of a usually major problem. Think of it as an airplane gauge that instead of stating losing altitude only gives a crash warning.
