Always change every 7,500 miles (+/- 200 miles, dependent on timing/appt availability) with full synthetic, and I have just under 51k miles. I would approximate 60-70% of that being city driving. Only since my last oil change (@ 44k miles) did I ever have to add any oil in between, where I added 1 quart about every 3k miles. I'm going in next week for my next oil change.
I had the same experience with my 2013 Kia Sorento. No warning, just a slight knock in the engine. I was flabbergastedTo find my crankcase empty of oil. Later, after driving 500 miles, I find myself adding more oil. I've contacted NHTSA to make them aware of this safety issue and to acquire a case #.
2020. And just over 40K miles
I also had this issue and took it for the “1,000 mile oil test” the first day I was told I had to leave my car (no loner car was given) and that it was 1&1/2 qt low. The second day I was called and told it’s only 1 qt low and under KIA guidelines that’s normal. Literally WTH
I doubt the dealership would fuss much if you asked for the old filter up front. I don't know about other states, but when we lived in Michigan, they were required to at least offer you your old broken parts when they replaced something.
Sometimes I feel I’m getting a little too old for this knd of task, too! I have back problems (surgery) and arthritis in my hands and knee. I just take my time (nice to be retired) and feel good that I can still do this (among other house chores) after more than 30 years of changing oils in all our previous vehicles—this Carnival is our ninth. They averaged 12-14 years which gives me some satisfaction when looking back. I changed the oil for the first time two weeks ago at 1,500 miles. I now have 2,400 miles. I share your concern on dealership’s use of quality oil (I use Pennzoil) and a few other things and this is why I still change my own oil and other fluids (those are still easy for me). Old habits die hard, I guess…Otherwise, I let the mechanics deal with the more complicated and heavier stuff.
I’ve asked them for my serpentine and timing belts (and throw them in the trunk) because they may be useful if I’m stranded away from “civilization”. Also weekends and holidays when we travel farther away—nice to have those old parts for emergency! Jist let the service person/mgr you want them back before leaving the car to them.

i am a new (<2500 miles) owner, so i have to ask: doesn't an "oil" light show on the dash to notify a low oil status?
What did they end up doing to fix this issue?
