Oil Filter Housing

I never trusted the plastic housing the first time I read about it! So I used a file to make a marker aligned to the weephole before I loosen the plastic housing for my first oil change. When it was time to close that fragile plastic housing, I stopped turning/tightening when I felt some resistance. Then I used my index finger to feel the marker aligned with the weep hole.That meant I’ve gone far enough as the original position of the plastic housing set from the factory. No more guessing!

It’s not a bad job at all, took me an hour including the oil change. Pulled the wheel, removed the one plastic button holding the inner fender and was able to bend it out of the way.

From now on, ill be buying the socket to appropriately torque.. lesson learned hahaha
 
Rhino ramps (heavy duty) make it easier for me.

The difficulty is its relatively low torque and the plastic doesn’t increase linearly like metal does. For example, a traditional oil filter is smooth when tightening and progressively gets harder. With the plastic housing, it stops and then it takes a fair amount of force to get it to 35nm. What occurs is it can go from being not torqued tight enough to way above 35nm.
 
you have to factor in varying temperatures as well...i'm always scared to torque it in the colder weather...i torque mine just shy of the recommended torque

Oil on male or female filter housing threads will give a false (higher) torque value. Any torque spec is always with dry threads. Drain and fill plugs as well.

Seems to me just about impossible to get every speck of oil off those threads after changing the oil filter. You can wipe it clean and dry, but there's a pretty good chance a little bit will run down while you're screwing filter housing in... I just take it easy when screwing it back in.
 
Make sure the filter is pushed in all the way so it breaks the inner seal.
Thanks for the excellent video. Not sure why the manufacturer thought that a replaceable element and reusable plastic cap and housing was a good idea. I've changed oil dozens of times on a variety of cars and never had to use a torque wrench. I haven't done the Telluride yet but will be pretty careful who I let do this task.
 
Does anyone have the torque specs for the oil filter housing bolts? The ones that mount the plastic housing to the engine? I plan on replacing my oil filter housing this weekend but have been unable to locate torque specs for the mounting bolts. I’m debating between good and tight or 3 uga dougas. LOL Can anyone confirm?

call the dealership. mine was replaced under warranty, a few weeks ago.

Wouldn't hurt to purchase an OEM backup Oil Housing as we are already aware of the issues. This way it will be an easy fix, once it fails. Maybe get 2? lol
 
I replaced it today. It was Pretty easy. Torqued the 4 bolts down to 15 ft lbs. It comes with an OEM oil filter already inside. I opened that up, put some oil on the O ring and made sure it was in the proper place and then torqued it to 35 NM. The oil filter housing was $100 at the dealer. They only had that 1 left though. From now on I will make sure to use my torque wrench every oil change.
