Dealer Markup

TBH it's both the look of the Telluride (exterior and interior) and glowing reviews that are attracting me. Haven't driven it - only multiple YouTube videos. The Palisade doesn't do the same for me on the outside.

Whether it's the Explorer, an Aviator or a used Model X (we generate lots of excess electricity with our solar), I'm sure I'll be happy in whatever other direction I go. Good for Kia in terms of building what seems like a great vehicle that is generating a $hit ton of demand and interest in their brand. The only downside for them is that during this MSRP markup phase they are probably missing out on an admittedly small cohort of buyers (present company included) that previously wouldn't have considered a Kia, but will probably end up in another brand due to timing.

I'll easily pay more for the Aviator or Model X than I would for a marked-up Telluride, but like many here I simply won't pay over MSRP even if it is a great vehicle.

Tell you what, you get an Aviator with AWD and I will trade you my Telluride straight up when I get it. 😎

Went to my local dealer today and drove and EX. I was able to see an SX and an SXP in person and I decided I would like to order the SX.. I told him I wasn't willing to go over MSRP however and was willing to wait until the initial rush subsides. He said he could get to MSRP "after incentives" which to me means $1500 over which I wasn't interested in. This is for an order not a car he has in stock.

Is this about normal? Can I find a dealer to order a SX at MSRP?

Thanks for the help,

I think there are an equal number of dealers that will order at MSRP. I had no problem finding a dealer who would order at MSRP. You just have to call around and get it in writing. Maybe if you shared your location or region someone could point you in the direction of a dealer.

Thank you,

To get the same features as the Telluride you have to add packages onto the Palisade which makes it more expensive. Plus the dealerships in my area are already charging a mark up on the Palisade too.

Well, that didn't take too long … I'm sure that they were watching the feeding frenzy with the Tellurides and said to themselves, "Hell, we should feast as well!!"

I live in LA and already walked out 2 dealers asking 10,000 over markups. But I'm not falling for that I rather wait or just go with a different brand that will hold more their value for resale

If you want the car then just be patient and wait if you can. Resale value on any vehicle is terrible unless you only plan on having a car for a few years. Depreciation daily beast. Any car is nothing but a depreciating asset. In fact, calling it an asset is inaccurate in and of itself. You can find many of the reputable dealers that people that posted on here and order a vehicle from them..... have it shipped to you or fly and drive it back home. This vehicle is easy to obtain it MSRP if you really want it. The third dealership I called took my order at MSRP, my exact build in the acessorieswas at the dealership waiting in less than 45 days. It wasn't a random allotment either.

These are just my opinions of course

Please tell me which dealerships are not charging markup for the Telluride sx in the bay area. Here in stockton and modesto they want 7k markup.

I would recommend Kia of Muncie Indiana.. they are selling at costco pricing which is below MSRP and will order. I just ordered from them... They just had one come in that's going to Virginia. They might be able to ship it and still be cheaper than most other dealers doing mark ups.

All the dealers in the SF Bay Area and LA Area are charging anywhere between $2k - $6k mark up above the MSRP. I called a dealer in Houston, TX and they are not doing that. CA is the only state that it is charging extra for this car. I guess is the law of supply and demand.
Oregon Dealers are doing the Same thing - $4,000 to $6,000. One dealer was boasting they had 200 people on a waiting list.

A SoCal dealers CRM system must have auto-reached out to me after I told them I wouldn’t pay over MSRP. I replied again saying I’d buy today at MSRP, but not over. He replied and suggested I try AZ dealers since he heard they are “only” asking $6k over. Both a laughable and irritating response at the same time.

I also live in LA and searched every dealership from San Diego up to Fresno for an SX with the lowest markup. There were plenty of dealers offering to make a deal for MSRP on S & EX models but NONE for the SX. The problem I was having was that the SX’s were hard to find, even with $3k-$6k markups! Of course, the dealers with the $10k markup had several SX’s in-stock (DTLA & Pro Cars in Glendale). A car was even being sold as I drove up to see it at Kirby in Ventura! The dealer called me and told me to turn around and go back home. In the end, I decided it was worth it to buy from a dealer with a $3k markup since the incentives I was getting equaled $2500. I needed a new vehicle and decided that the Telluride was exactly what I wanted & needed. Considering that an equivalent Explorer was at least $10k more than the Telluride and they were in such high demand being recently released, I still consider the Telluride a bargain. I didn’t want a Pilot or Highlander either, and the BMW that I would love to have is around at least $20k higher! So I bit the bullet and put a deposit down on an incoming Gravity Grey with black interior SX. I was told it would arrive in less than 7 days but it was actually closer to 3 weeks. The whole buying process was pretty much a nightmare, including the sleaziest finance manager that I’ve ever encountered. However, I LOVE this vehicle! I traded in a Volvo SUV for this and previously drove two BMW SUV’s & four BMW sedans before the Volvo. All I can say is that it was worth all the hassle and I get to enjoy this vehicle everyday while others stop me and ask what I’m driving. The only advice I’d give KIA is to also up their dealership staff to the same level of upper end clientele that their vehicles now support. Get rid of all the games & deceitfulness if they want to keep this new level of buyer. I kept very good notes on what markup each dealership was charging in So Cal, feel free to reach out to me and I’ll happily share that info.

Do you mind sharing the dealerships that are making deals at MSRP for the S trim?

Congrats.!!

What was wrong with the Volvo SUV? You mentioned that you needed a new vehicle.

I thought the “all glass” controls looked nice until I realized how hard it is to operate pretty much anything in the vehicle without scrolling through menus or without taking your eyes off the road. Plus, I had the first year of the new XC60 model which had a horrible and very rough “on/off” ignition setting that couldn’t be set to always “off”. But worse, I dont think the CPU was powerful enough to operate several requests at the same time so the screen almost always froze up on me while trying to drive. This was especially bad when I would start the car, plug in Apple Car Play and put the car in reverse. The reverse cameras almost always took at least 10-15 seconds before it appeared on the center console, which can feel like eternity when you’re in a rush or someone is waiting on your parking space. The center screen was basically too much of a distraction and even went black on me while driving, causing the whole system to reboot. I think the newer model years are probably better with the software upgrades but I was so turned off by the lack of care in the service department that I simply didn’t want to have anything to do with Volvo again. I think the car was in their service department around 25 days over 6 visits in the first 18 months while they tried to deal with the software issues. The reverse cameras actually didn’t even work from day one, which means they didn’t even check them before delivery. Plus I have a growing family and while we could manage all the baby stuff with one child, it would have been too tight with 2.

Oh yeah, I remember the XC90 had a lot of issues in its first year. Didn't realize it extended to XC60.

Currently at a Kia dealership in the Chicago area getting a windshield replacement and snapped a pic of the markup sticker on a LX model...WOW!! Glad I’m just here for service...no way I would pay that price...
