Hello Fellow Telluride Companions,

I’m not sure if anyone else is having some difficulty with the dealers but I wanted to ask a question.

I contacted a dealer about purchasing the Telluride SXP by financing through my credit union and placing a deposit of $1k to order the vehicle. There telling me they have to do a “credit application” before placing an order for a car. I asked why, if I’m coming in with a pre-approval from my credit union they’ve already pulled my credit and will cut a check for the full amount of the vehicle. They keep telling me its there policy to place a order but it makes no sense. If I’m not financing the car through them why would they need a credit application. I feel it’s a form of cohersion on their part just to pull your credit to see if they can beat the rate offered to you by someone else. The problem with that is one this will decrease my score and stay on my credit for 2 years. Two, I’m getting 3% form my own bank I know for a fact they can’t beat it. Please tell me if this makes any sense and what I can do.

Thank You

You're getting a great rate from your bank. Don't fill out a credit app or let them do a credit check to order the vehicle - that makes no sense whatsoever. You'll need to find another dealer. The only requirement a dealer has from Kia when they place an order is to show an actual deposit from a human - the customer. In the case of one dealer I contacted, they requested a $500 credit card charge. Another dealer just asked for an image of a $300 check (sent via e-mail) for the file - but they said that they wouldn't cash it as they just needed to show Kia that they had a real buyer (to avoid fake orders). Where are you located? That can help point you to the best dealership in your area. If that doesn't exist and you are a Costco member (if not join for $60 from Groupon) - then order from Kia of Muncie - one of 3 dealerships doing Costco pricing.

Also, make sure you agree on ALL taxes, fees etc up front with any dealer (Kia of Muncie is straigtforward) - as some dealers will try to jack up price when car arrives. Or, they will charge really high doc fees or ridiculous add-ons. Make sure deposit is refundable - get in signed writing from a sales manager if you leave $1k plus.

Doing a credit app for ordering is a shady practice that is completely unnecessary. I'd just avoid that dealership entirely. On average, Kia dealers have pretty awful sales practices - maybe 1 out of 8 is actually honest and trustworthy when it comes to Telluride sales?

WOW!! Thank you so much. I thought it was shady and told them I’m reporting them to KIA home office. I live in Delaware and the Dealer is in Newark. They stated this information to me via email as I’ve been in communication with them. I just got off the phone with a Wilmington dealer and he was upfront and honest. Stating exactly what you have advised and are willing to take $500 deposit. He also said what I received from KIA.com as the MSRP they will honor. I just learned about Costco and will also be getting a membership through them to see what there quite is. It’s really sad when they try to con people like that.

WOW!! Thank you so much for the info. I had a feeling something wasn’t right, it made no sense. I told them I will contact Kia’s home office and make a complaint, it’s ludicrous what they were saying. I live in Delaware and the car dealership is located in Newark. I contacted another dealer in Wilmington and they stated exactly what you said and also advised they would accept $500 for a deposit as well as honoring the MSRP I received from Kia.com. I just found out about Costco and will be getting a member ship to see what offers they have as well. It’s a shame when they try to take advantage of people like that.

We will gladly place an order for a $500 deposit. Bring us a certified check when you pick up...done deal! Costco member? Even better! No games.

Well, Newark NJ is a shady city to begin with, not sure why you would go from Delaware to shop there.

Honestly, you may be best to just order from Kia of Muncie and not worry about it. Save yourself the time of hunting and negotiating with dealers. You may go into that dealership you mentioned just to find out they have $1000+ of add-ons that they won't remove from sale. Or a massive doc fee. With Kia of Muncie, even if you have to have it transported from Indiana, it may still be less than MSRP. You just have to wait.

Better yet, just order from them, fly to Indianapolis when it arrives, they'll transport you to the dealership, finish sale, then start on your 600 mile Journey back home to break in the car.

Highly unlikely you'll be able to beat thei r offer in the current environment! Call today! :)

Hot Bed of activity for us. We just created a map at our store with push pins for sold orders. The east coast is lit up like a Christmas Tree! 🎅🎄

We do not pay this guy! Thank You.

No, you don't pay me. Just promoting you based on my own experiences and those of other forum members. I'd also promote other good dealerships from my search, but since she's on East coast it wouldn't make sense. Also, since certain incentives have expired, Costco pricing is quite attractive, and y'all are one of a few dealers doing it.

I spent a lot of time hunting - wasted time, energy, phone calls, putting up with uninformed salespeople - ultimately I was glad that my dealer didn't try to pull any BS when I took delivery in mid August - but now my dealer is asking $6k markups for orders / unsold inventory. Word got around.

If I were ordering today, I'd just call y'all. May buy the extended warranty from y'all soon. Or order a second Telluride!

Sure, np. You came to the right place if you really want to buy a Telluride without hassle. Note that Costco pricing is an agreement with dealerships - each dealership chooses whether to honor it - and currently only 3 dealerships nationwide are honoring it for Telluride (according to Jason), so don't go out and buy a Costco membership if you intend to order from a dealer that isn't participating in Costco pricing. Good luck in your search... we're here to help where we can.

I'd be interested to see a picture of this map, Jason.

Tell Lucas to get it done with all the spare time he has...lol... I can't wait to see it too.
Yes. It's time consuming for sure.

KIA did have special financing 0.9% @48mo, 1.9% @60mo, and 2.9% @72mo depending on the length of the loan, but everything the dealer told you was "required" is utter garbage BS. When I went to purchase mine, the salesman told me that, in order to receive a $1000 discount, I needed to finance with KMF and stay with KMF for at least 3 months (I think there was some BS in there). One thing I hated was that the salesman was NOT transparent about these deals; when I got to finance they were like "oh it's either the $1,000 or the lower % APR", which the salesman had said was I needed to use the lower APR through them to get the $1,000. When I bitched at the salesman he just said "you understood me wrong" even though I checked about 4 times with him reiterating to ensure there was no type of miscommunication. My wife agreed they were full of $h!t. I could have left, I suppose, but the car would have gotten snatched up before I left the dealer (there were literally two couples at the dealer waiting).

Ended up being a good deal, but it left me with a sour feeling.

So, better rate is possible, but 3.00%, from a credit union, is pretty damn good.

Good luck!
