If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Driving on I-10 returning to Orlando from Baton Rouge. Light rain, 6pm, when all of a sudden i heard my sunroof explode and glass shards collapsed on the closed sunshade. I found a covered dry spot since i now had a hole in my roof. When the rain stopped i went to the hardware store and bought waterproof tape, duct tape and a tarp. I covered the hole with tape and the tarp and stayed overnight in MS.
My dealer has my Telluride and is waiting Kia Corporate. This is day 5 with no answer. Frustrating!!!

First I've heard of this on Telluride. Keep us posted.

The Kia corp person that call to start the claims process said she had two others before mine.

Exploding sunroofs are not new to Kia and Hyundai. Hyundai just settled a lawsuit for earlier models that had a panoramic sunroof that exploded. This problem is across all brands though, they are too big and under tremendous stress. If there are impurities in the glass when manufactured it dramatically increases the chance for shattering.

It will be interesting if they warranty it, most brands will not and you will have to go through your insurance.

Wow, glad you're OK, this could have been a disaster with major injuries.

I have always hated glass moonroofs. They're called sunroofs now but back in the '70s-90s sunroofs were steel and in the late '70s glass moon roofs began to appear on Lincolns and a few others. Within 25 years, the steel "sunroof" was supplanted by the glass moon roof.

Glass is potentially dangerous and can result in blinding injuries. If I could opt for NO sunroof, I would.

My '15 Geneses has a 10 year extended warranty on the ridiculous "panoramic" roof which manufacturers make such a big deal about.

Others have had shatter issues usually with the stupid panoramic roof. Glass is heavy and adds weight to the top of the car, exactly where I DON'T want it.

This pano roof is a Mercedes invention IIRC. I hate them. Give me a fully configurable TFT gauge cluster and keep the dang glass.

The panoramic sunroof on my BMW X5 exploded last year. BMW wouldn’t cover it as they said it had to have happened due to some type of impact, which I knew wasn’t the case. Insurance did pay for it luckily because they wanted $7K for the repair! Really hoping to not go through that again with the telluride. Good luck.

Yes, the irony of the sunroof is if you live an area where there are a lot of sunny days, you can’t enjoy it. Either the glare or all the extra heat the glass allows in the car kills the fun. Moonroof was a much more appropriate term.
Now that I know there is a possibility of exploding I will definitely keeps those shades closed for the first year.

Most on here can not grasp the no use/need for the sun roof, as they have not had 112 degrees blasting them when sitting in traffic. I'd gladly pass on the sun roof if it were an option.

💯! I wish they were an option as well

Also happened to my 2017 Kia Sorrento. We did not take no for a answer. Keep fighting. Good luck and God bless you.

I may put clear vinyl wrap or darker tint on the inner glass to protect passengers in the event of a shatter. I just thought of that. Might need to consider for the Gen. In the 2 years I've had it, I have never opened the inner cover or touched the switch to open the glass. I don't even know if it works.

GOOD NEWS. After a few calls to the dealer and a few calls to Kia's Corporate office, they have approved replacing the glass in my sunroof at Kia's expense. Perseverance paid off. Thanks to Kia for doing the right thing. If the glass arrives at the dealer tomorrow, I should have my Telluride back Friday.

I just bought a Palisade which is ideally the sister vehicle. I had the car for just 4 days and same thing happened to me on the interstate. I did not have the cover closed but I will be keeping the inside slider closed from now on.

Uggh, that's awful. You'll be finding glass in the carpet for years.

Keeping the slider closed defeats the purpose of a glass moon roof in the first place which is why I hate them.

I keep mine closed 100% on my Genesis with it's useless pano roof with it's 10 year extended warranty because it's prone to shatter.

I hate glass over my head and wish I could opt for steel and twin solar panels.

Exact same thing happened last year with my wife's CX-9 going from cool garage to warm morning sun. Scared the crap out of her when it happened. Mazda covered it under warranty as it obviously wasn't hit with anything. We were still finding tiny squares of glass months later. Keep us posted!

This just happened to my Telluride yesterday. On I-44 headed toward St Louis and out of nowhere the sunroof just exploded. Thank goodness the inside cover was closed. I am currently at the dealer waiting to see what they say.

Kia Corp paid to replace mine. Good luck.

My dealership contacted the District Service Manager who told them they would do a goodwill warranty replacement of the sunroof. Parts are ordered, we'll see when it's completed.
