I paid 10k over MSRP and I don't think I'm dumb, rich, or trying to "show off". Let's discuss as adults (no trolls)

...So my deal was for an SXP with tow package, roof rails, added remote start start, and wheel locks (Moss Green with Dune Brown Interior).
The dealer wanted 10k over MSRP stating "market adjustment" ( we settled for $8500) but I traded in a 2009 Tahoe for the markup and financed the MSRP.
Are there buyers with better deals...I'm sure!!! Do I feel I got a"bad" deal...not at all.
But even though I don't have to...I'd like to hear the responses, comments and questions.

You wanted something Right Now. You got it. No wrong in doing so. Obviously, you have the means to pay over MSRP. If you think you got a deal that is all that matters. Would I do it? No, but everyone is different and I'm sure the additional responses will show that.

I wouldn't just put it that "Obviously, I have the means" as if it shows some type of status quo, which presumes (if I do) means I'm ok with spending more. In my eyes I didn't spend more since I got my value out of my trade in and i financed the MSRP. If my trade went to the dealer for the overall deal then it is what it is....but
My question (and I'd like to be honestly answered) is...Is Kia selling this car to dealers at a huge discount ? I'm told NO (as far as the trim and options go, etc.
I was told that a lot of dealers are getting the ride very close to MSRP from the jump which is why they markup (supply and demand), if I am wrong or misinformed then please educate a bother.

Dealers don't get cars at discounts. Whomever told you that is completely wrong. They mark these cars up over greed. So you basically looked at the Tahoe as out of sight out of mind? It's still $8k no matter how you look at it. I've seen so many emails from people saying I was told my Telluride is going to appreciate in value because it is rare. Not true. I've seen people say... Well I paid over sticker and this is what it's worth. Not true. It might be worth that to an individual but not a dealer or a company that might have insurance on it. For instance... If you totaled the Telluride today, you paying a mark up would not even be considered in the claim. I think some owners out there are being lied to just so they feel somewhat good about getting beat up. Not to say you did but it all depends on how you look at it. This mark up is going away once production catches up. The dealers doing so have a small window of opportunity left and they know it unfortunately.

Serra Kia in Alabama is now selling Tellurides 1k below MSRP, the volume dealers in Atlanta are now only marking up 1K (from 3K markup last week, and 6K at the beginning of Jan). Production has increased and the next model year is coming soon enough. I would never pay that much over MSRP, but to each their own, especially if you keep it long term, it's worth it to you, nothing wrong with that.

I think it's crazy to pay over MSRP for any vehicle. Heck, the Telluride is the first vehicle I've ever paid sticker price for and still felt like I overpaid.

You paid what you paid because you had to have the vehicle, and your happy, so who cares what other people think.

The depreciation on these vehicles will be evident within a few years. Telluride has been for sale since April of 2019, production has ramped up to 100k, and I now seem them every where on the roads. You're basically stuck with the vehicle unless you want to take a huge loss. That would be my main concern in the future.

I don’t understand why you paid that much over when there are so many dealers who are not marking up. Unless you live in a area that is all markup. It is kinda cool to be driving a vehicle that is rarely seen on the road at this point. In a year or so we will be seeing many I am sure!

Could have paid one of the several around here in Chicago that are $2k, $3k and so on (a couple are up to 10k but that's going away fast) over MSRP and eaten a grand on shipping to wherever you are and still be about $4-5k ahead of that. But to each their own.

I spent the better part of the afternoon/evening searching for an SXP without markup yesterday. It is like a unicorn. However, it's not a $8-10k unicorn to me.

I think the lure of this vehicle is the Price. An additional $8k-10k makes most of my buyers think twice.

Yeah, in my talking with several places yesterday (I think I talked to all of Wisconsin and half the dealers in IL that I hadn't already talked to and had an SXP listed on their site)... I flat out just started telling them to give the straight price at MSRP and no add-ons, that I'm not going way underwater right off the bat. Which is what they're doing to people. When you have 5-10 people call on a car a day, but none bite because you have it priced over MSRP... it's going to sit until you either find a someone willing to pay more or drop the price.

In my opinion, if you absolutely needed the car ASAP (say, you had a total loss or your current car crapped out) then maybe I see why someone would do so. Outside of those conditions, whether I had the means or not, it's a poor fiscal decision. The car will NEVER appreciate in value and the car is NOT worth any mark-up. If you were comfortable with the deal, that's fine but agreeing to such terms ruins the marketplace and emboldens dealers to continue this practice. The trade-in doesn't help, either. You still paid that much for the Telluride.

Right, once the market settles, all the individuals who paid these exorbitant mark-ups may feel a little angry when they see people getting decent, fair deals on the same car. The price of having the newest hot commodity can be steep!

Unless the trade in was a gift or something, its still holds a monetary value because you paid for it. You can't just ignore that. Clearly by the fact that you traded in a car this wasn't an ASAP need.
Also, it really isn't that hard to get an on-the-lot SX-P for a markup of less than $8500. Obviously this is your money, but I will never be ok with intentionally making a poor fiscal decision.

Next time pay me $2,000 in cash and I will locate you a great deal!! 🤝 Forum members....steaks and cocktails on me!

I see you got your car in NJ. I also ordered my car in NJ for MSRP - incentives, granted I had to wait. Other individuals on this forum have purchased on-the-lot SX-Ps from my same dealership for MSRP - incentives...doing your research would have saved you thousands.

And NJ is one of the worst states by far.

You loved the dealer, thus you gave him/her a generous gift. That’s nice of you. Wish I was the dealer. Next time you feel like being generous, look me up please!

$8500 over.........wow......

It’s Saturday and I’m going to run a 2 for $20 cheese pizza special at my restaurant. BUT BUT for you Telluride owners if you enter the code Telluride or mention Telluride during your order we’ll make it 2 for $30 !! That’s right! 2 for $30 for all our Telluride valued customers! Rush right in and place your order before we sell out. 🍕🍕

🤣 Can we get pepperoni for free!?

It's all about how much you like and value a vehicle, how much money you have to spend and are willing to spend, how much time and effort you're willing to put in to hunt down a deal, and when you can get it. Based on a combination of these things you'll arrive at what you pay.
