Hello everyone,

A quick synopsis of the situation: My wife and I are expecting our first child at the end of October (hooray, right?) and are in the market for a 3-row SUV. I had never considered a Korean car due to "reputations" until I saw a Doug DeMuro review on the Palisade a few months ago on YouTube. My wife didn't like the styling on the Palisade and mentioned the Telluride. I reluctantly went to the local dealer (South Shore Kia) and was pleasantly surprised by the styling and features of the Telluride. We have since looked at the Subaru Ascent, Acura MDX Hybrid, Honda Pilot, BMW X5, GLE 350, Ford Explorer, and the Lexus RX-L. To be honesty, the Telluride SX-P blows them all away in terms of value. The only other vehicle I really liked was the MDX hybrid due to its impressive power-train, but it is missing that luxury feel that the SX-P provides for a seemingly higher price tag.

I have been diligently keeping track of inventory through Kia.com and have called a few dealers when the color combination/package/accessory shows up. Disappointingly, most of the time, the vehicle doesn't actually exist or is being sold wildly above MSRP. Two days ago, I saw a moss green show up at Generation Kia with the tow package, running boards, cross bars, wheel locks, and carpeted mats. I called for a price and the salesman reassured me, to my delight, that they sell the Tellurides at sticker (a little over $49,000). My wife and I went to our banks to pick up certified cashiers checks to go pick up the vehicle for following day, and I excitedly joined this forum that very night.

Forward to yesterday at the dealer where things quickly unraveled. After presenting the checks, the salesmen puts a piece of paper in front of me with a number over 53,500 in front of me and told me, to my dismay, that this is the price of the vehicle prior to taxes and DMV fees. He denied ever saying sticker when I reminded him of our conversation not even 24 hours prior. I walked out, furious, not without making a scene, and filed a complaint with Kia Corporate and torching the reviews for the dealer online.

Looking back now, the synopsis was not so quick, but I am beyond frustrated with this buying experience. I can get an MDX Hyrbrid for around 53,000, the same price quoted for the Kia. We want the Kia though, but not bad enough to pay over MSRP for a rapidly depreciating asset. We do have time on our side, as the child is not due until late October.

If you have made it this far, I commend and thank you for listening to my gripes. What I am asking for is advice on any dealer with 75 miles of Nassau county that is willing to order the Telluride for us at MSRP.

Thanks again

Wow. The games these guys keep playing is beyond ridiculous.

So what you are asking for is MSRP out the door for a SX-P? Getting one of those at MSRP + TL is a feat right now. Consider yourself lucky. Even if @Jason Fox sold it to you with the Costco discount, you would still end up paying over MSRP after paying NY sales tax and license fees. And he has the lowest SX-P prices around. In the current market, you will not get the deal that you are looking for. Sorry to be the bearer.......

I don't think I follow, ksyrah. I should consider myself lucky to be baited and switched? I was quoted a specific price and was willing to do business at the stated price. We had to go to two separate banks to access our funds. I am trying to be a smart consumer and not make a purchase on something impulse. So I should be lucky to pay over 4k MSRP is what you are saying?

I am sorry if I am coming off as confrontational, but I really don't get what I should consider myself lucky over? My upcoming child? Yes, I am blessed for that, thank you.

You have a baby coming in October. You walk into Babys-r-us to buy a car seat. It has a price of $199.99. You walk up to the cash register and give $200 and expect $.01 in change. But there is the sales tax that you also have to pay. Do you complain about the added cost above the $199.99 "sticker" price? No, you pay the sales tax because the state adds it to almost everything. Same with a car. The dealer is selling it to you for MSRP. It is the state, in your case, NY, that is adding the additional cost that it requires the dealer to collect. The sales price does not go up, just the cost to you, if that makes sense. If you want a deal, you need to negotiate the "out the door" price. As hot as the Telluride is right now, especially the model that you want, MSRP + taxes and fees is a good deal. There seem to be some deals on lower models, though.
I think he's saying it was $53k before taxes and or fees.

Could be. I interpreted it as he took cashiers checks in the amount of about the $49K sticker price. Maybe some clarification is needed.

I re-read it . My bad. RooRoo was screwed

This is correct. We were putting 40k down and looking to finance the rest, including taxes and fees.

Not to be extra dramatic, but this process has been emotionally draining. Sorry for the confusion.

So yeah, anyone have any good dealers they can recommend near Long Island?

I had no luck around here. I'm in Suffolk. I purchased from Abeloff Kia in East Stroudsburg PA. It was very easy and they were great to deal with. I think there are some others on here that have also. It might be a little further than you were looking but I was able to handle most of it by phone, text and email. Even had the trade in all set up before I got there.

Thanks for the advice @Thebiga17 I just checked their inventory and found that they have an SX in stock. I am more than willing to drive 2.5 hours one way to save $4000. Wish me luck haha.

Its definitely worth it. That's about what I saved from purchasing from them instead of what the dealers here wanted. I dealt with Julie but they all seemed friendly. No bait and switch like here. Good luck and congrats! We just had our second which made us need an upgrade.

I’m in NYC and purchased from Garvey Kia in Queensbury NY. I found my Grey/black SXP w/ tow through the vin lookup and it was somehow not claimed. It’s NY so registration may be simpler but a bit of a hike. Straight MSRP (48,015) and no games. Dealt with Brian who even ended up handling most of the financing over the phone as well. I showed up and signed the paperwork in about 15 minutes, got a 20 min tour of the car and was off. I did ask them to remove their advertising (sticker on back) as well and he happily obliged.

Looks like they only have two EX’s at the moment but could be worth giving a call if your up for a 4 hour drive.

I was able to contact Abeloff Kia regarding the SX-P listed on their website. Unfortunately, that one was sold. Fortunately, they have a Moss Green with the tow package arriving in 5 weeks I was able to snatch at MSRP that isn't showing on their inventory yet 🙃 Looks like me and the wife are taking a road trip.

On a side note, Generation Kia on Long Island reached out to me about the scolding review I posted online telling me they would do what needed to be done to make it right. Sadly, it seems that honoring their quoted sticker price is not possible.

That's great! Yeah they are very easy to work with. It's in the Poconos so its not a bad ride. I drove up early and got back in time to get my son off the bus. Who did you work with?

I am working with Billy Borent. The guy seems very friendly and even sent me a personalized video as an introduction. He didn't try to upsell anything, quickly provided a detailed bill, and explained all of those random extra charges. ($397 Doc fee, $17 Digital Filing) We are very excited. I hope this works out because I don't think my heart can take it.

Oh I'm sure it will work out. They didn't play games with me. What they sent me and we agreed upon was what I paid when I got there. I wasn't pressured to add anything on either.
