Hello everyone,
A quick synopsis of the situation: My wife and I are expecting our first child at the end of October (hooray, right?) and are in the market for a 3-row SUV. I had never considered a Korean car due to "reputations" until I saw a Doug DeMuro review on the Palisade a few months ago on YouTube. My wife didn't like the styling on the Palisade and mentioned the Telluride. I reluctantly went to the local dealer (South Shore Kia) and was pleasantly surprised by the styling and features of the Telluride. We have since looked at the Subaru Ascent, Acura MDX Hybrid, Honda Pilot, BMW X5, GLE 350, Ford Explorer, and the Lexus RX-L. To be honesty, the Telluride SX-P blows them all away in terms of value. The only other vehicle I really liked was the MDX hybrid due to its impressive power-train, but it is missing that luxury feel that the SX-P provides for a seemingly higher price tag.
I have been diligently keeping track of inventory through Kia.com and have called a few dealers when the color combination/package/accessory shows up. Disappointingly, most of the time, the vehicle doesn't actually exist or is being sold wildly above MSRP. Two days ago, I saw a moss green show up at Generation Kia with the tow package, running boards, cross bars, wheel locks, and carpeted mats. I called for a price and the salesman reassured me, to my delight, that they sell the Tellurides at sticker (a little over $49,000). My wife and I went to our banks to pick up certified cashiers checks to go pick up the vehicle for following day, and I excitedly joined this forum that very night.
Forward to yesterday at the dealer where things quickly unraveled. After presenting the checks, the salesmen puts a piece of paper in front of me with a number over 53,500 in front of me and told me, to my dismay, that this is the price of the vehicle prior to taxes and DMV fees. He denied ever saying sticker when I reminded him of our conversation not even 24 hours prior. I walked out, furious, not without making a scene, and filed a complaint with Kia Corporate and torching the reviews for the dealer online.
Looking back now, the synopsis was not so quick, but I am beyond frustrated with this buying experience. I can get an MDX Hyrbrid for around 53,000, the same price quoted for the Kia. We want the Kia though, but not bad enough to pay over MSRP for a rapidly depreciating asset. We do have time on our side, as the child is not due until late October.
If you have made it this far, I commend and thank you for listening to my gripes. What I am asking for is advice on any dealer with 75 miles of Nassau county that is willing to order the Telluride for us at MSRP.
Thanks again
