• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... My Brother in law and I both have a Prestige Telluride. He recently started having AC problems when he drove to Florida from Texas. After driving a bit you will get a musty air smell and the AC gets super cold then stops blowing through vents. You Turn the speed on high and you can hear it blowing but sounds restricted and nothing comes out. You can turn it off for a while and back on then it will work for a little bit and stop again. The Dealer is having a hard time re-creating the issue but it has happened to him multiple times now.

Maybe swapping the cabin air filter with a carbon activated one might help?

This is gross, but I will share just in case . . . I had to park a car outside of my garage for a few weeks once and noticed a nasty smell when I ran the AC only to discover a mouse had crawled into the engine bay and made it's way to the cabin air filter and there we some dead baby mice.

This is more than just a smell issue.. the car stops blowing AC all together.. Seems to be an electrical problem.

If this issue is occurring often, I would recommend that the next time your brother runs into it.

He pull aside, pop open the hood, leave the engine and A/C on and look for the A/C clutch. Just make sure it is spinning. If it is not spinning, then there is an engagement issue and that would be your problem, I had a simliar issue with my 2011 Civic and the symptoms are the same. Replacing the A/C clutch solved that issue.

Not sure if the clutch on the compressor would be the problem since the vents stop blowing air as well. Unless this car is sensing the temp of the air and shutting down flow? I know some cars won't blow air until it hits a desired temp before they let it come through the vents.

Does the problem persist when he turns the temp control to lowest setting? That would answer the question if it was a thermostat issue.

It makes sense that when the A/C turns off the fan continues blowing musty air. Happens in any car when you turn A/C off but keep the fan running.

If you keep the climate settings on auto, it will divert the fan to whichever direction it thinks is best. Use the manual direction adjustment to have the fan blow through the front vents only to see if the blower is operational.

Sounds like it could be an issue with the A/C compressor not receiving power or thermostat signal properly?

Also make sure the Idle stop and go is disabled when you are trying to determine the problem. ISG will turn off the A/C at stop lights.

This is brother in Law: I keep my AC on auto and 70. It started last saturday on the way to florida. It blows like normal and then a musty smell comes and the AC gets overly cold and it stops blowing from the vents even though you hear it blowing. You can turn the speed higher to max and sometimes it will start blowing again super cold but then stops blowing quickly after. You have to turn it off for a while and then the ac with be blowing cold again but then stops again. It has done it for 11 days straight and now they say they cant duplicate it.,..

Make sure he's paying attention to this and see if it's only happening when the vehicle is stopped. Could be why the dealer can't replicate it, bc its supposed to do this. Ours has these symptoms too but only when the engine shuts down while at a stop. On hot days its extremely noticeable.

This is happening while driving.

Maybe take a video of it when its happening and the technician can try to replicate it that way after watching the video.

Well the Dealer just called me and they drove it multiple times and the issue never happened...Go figure. I guess i will wait until it happens and try to video it. Thanks guys

Or next time it happens and you are nearby the dealer, have one of salesmen or technicians sit in the passenger side and explain to them what is happening. If they feel it too at least they can confirm it is a problem.

I’m wondering if this could also be an unwanted side effect of the auto defog or auto ventilation systems.

Auto defog logic controls air intake and a/c whenever one of the fan positions are set to the windshield.

Auto defog system controls air intake, a/c, air flow and fan speed when it senses moisture near the windshield.

Auto ventilation will change to fresh air intake if you use recirculated air for 30 minutes straight.

Try disabling one or all of these systems and see if it solves your problem. Maybe if it has been really humid in Florida, it has been triggering the automated systems more frequently.

I have a 2020 Telluride and the A/C has failed EVERY Year (2025 Now and it's TOAST again) So frustrating!

It could be that you need a new cabin filter?

I have a 2024 EX and I complained to the dealer about insufficient cooling. They did a test and evacuated the compressor and I was told there is probably a slow leak. They replaced it with a remanufactured conpressor. It seems to be working ok
