• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
    If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... 2020 Telluride AWD rear end jerking thumping and vibrating

If yours does not have a vibration issue you really shouldn't be commenting with such a silly question on this forum for that specific issue.
That would be silly for someone if they don't have a vibration issue to go get an independent diagnosis.
Bev, I didn't make that first comment you quoted with my name on it - if you click on it, it takes you to the second comment you quoted, which I did make. Actually, a question. The first one looks like some weird mashup of my comment and something else. No idea.

Whatever the case, I only asked a question - without the rest of the "absurd" part - and I asked it because you have suggested that other AWD owners might have the issue and not know it.

How will Kia know the drive shaft has been removed, unless you tell them? (put match marks on it first, remove it, test it, replace it using the match marks, erase the match marks)
by bolts. this will be visible on the heads. at the factory, the bolts are tightened with a special tool that does not leave marks.

@NCTelly

Not sure how you can decode the first 11 numbers of a VIN but here are 3 VIN#'s with the known issue thus far.

5XYP5DHC8MG
5XYP5DHC4MG
5XYP5DHC0MG

Awfully close together

Well with just a few seconds on www.failcat.com I can enter 5XYP5DHC then determine those are all 2021 AWD SXes.

5 = made in US
XY = Kia Motors
P5DHC = Telluride SX (5 means SX, D means AWD)
n = n/a security check digit
M = 2021 (L is 2020)
G = Georgia plant

I think I have that right. @DruKe or @foresterh are better experts.

5th digit means 2=LX, 6=S, 3=EX, 5=SX
6th digit means 4=FWD, D=AWD

I haven't done the 2021 Model Code breakdown, but in 2020 5XYP5DHC was model code J4482. But just clicking on a few window stickers in failcat you could figure out the model code pretty quickly. 3 Digit option codes vary even more.

Learning so much about driveshafts following this thread. This video great for those trying to keep up with the discussions.

Max working angle and velocity fluctuations really are explained very well in terms of how it can cause vibrations.

At 4:50, phasing (synchronizing u joints) is explained. Another potential cause of heavy vibration if sync not installed properly.

My mind in the gutter when seeing the slip joints in action. Lol.

Is it true that the six-digit serial number that follows is a basic count coming off the assembly line?

Sadly, there are a lot of people out there that don't even know if they have an FWD or AWD or are writing any vibration off as road. Because of my location, I do mostly highway which has recently been repaved and it's very noticeable. My husband used to be a mechanic and although he doesn't work on any of our vehicles anymore because of age, he definitely knows vehicles.
If there are some AWD's out there that really do not have a vibration issue, then I'm curious to know what the difference is between those and the ones that do.

Another item to compare other than the beginning of the VIN could be the door jam of the driver's door. There are rear and front GAWR numbers. This is specific to your model and options to determine the axle weight rating. If you have a lower number from another AWD Telluride it could mean that you have more factory features that could be affecting the height of the driveshaft front to back. Things like Trim, non-prestige/prestige, 7/8 passenger, standard/nappa etc, could vary the weight front and back.

I have a 2021 SX-P (7 pass) with tow and no vibration issue, the vin is 5XYP5DHC8MG###### same as the first one in the list that has the vibration issues.

So there must be another factor perhaps acting with the 5 degree U joint design to cause the vibrations.....

I'll add that I don't have Tow on mine.

Agree. I'm curious too. It would be great to know. My guess is the vast majority of AWDs don't have this issue. I can't imagine many people having this experience with a brand new car and not noticing. Expectations with a vehicle like this are for a smooth, quiet, stable, clean ride.

I'm curious whether the serial numbers of Tellys with vibration issues are close.

Alright @mgoblue, @Kwim and @Bev can you guys list your trim and options?

Mine:
2021 SX-P AWD
Dune Leather
Side steps
illuminated scuff plates
Carpeted floor mats
No Towing

A commonality so far is that all are AWD SX's with no Towing.
You could sleuth out how close in production date/order all of the affected vehicles are by comparing serial numbers. Same day? Same week? Nowhere close at all?
