15,000 mile oil change

I haven't taken the telly in yet, but I've gotten my Mazda's oil changed at a local-ish place called the Lube Center. I think it is a chain, but not a big one. You don't have to get out of the car, and I watch them do all of the work. They have a camera even showing the pit. When I got my tranny fluid changed in the past, I could watch them do the drains and refills (I asked them not to do the pressure flush). I get my state inspections there too. I have no complaints with the work or the pricing. They don't bother trying to upsell more than they have to. I haven't decided yet, but I'm probably going to take the Telly there.

Interesting...curious to know what chain does this.

I had been taking my Telluride every 7500 miles as specified by the manual. I’m down in South Florida where it’s hot & humid a good amount of the year. My Mazda said because of this to change every 5000, but I didn’t see any mention of that in the manual. However when I was getting my oil changed for the second time they recommended switching to every 5000 miles instead of 7500, both because of the climate and also I had some crazy wear on my tires when they rotated them. I’ll need to replace those soon already.
Manual states for warmer climates you can use 10w30 for better protection.

I forgot one thing also higher octane gasoline does not = more power.

Now this…. Manufacturers claim it does.

I don’t know enough to get passionate about this one tho! Not that I don’t love a good one.
Actually this one should be re-phrased to be accurate. "It's not that higher-octane gas has more power; high-compression engines, designed to run on 91-93 or even 95 octane gas, will have slightly less power if you put lower octane gas 89 or less". Here is the explanation:

The octane number dictates the resistance of gas/air mixture to pre-ignite at certain pressure/temp. When the gas/air mixture enters the cylinder, the piston compresses the mixture to a point before the spark plug creates a spark that leads to a controlled explosion within the cylinder that pushes back the piston and moves the crankshaft. In high-compression engines, the gas/air mixture reaches a higher pressure/temp than in regular engines. If some of mixture ignites before the spark, it creates a situation of a multiple mini explosion before a larger explosion. This is called a "knock". As you might imagine, a "knocked" combustion cycle is not as powerful as a regular cycle without knock, therefore, the engine doesn't generate as much torque/hp.

Higher octane gas has a greater resistance to "knocking" or premature ignition, giving the power the engine was designed to provide rather than less power. It actually doesn't do anything different than lower octane gas if the engine doesn't produce high enough compression to pre-ignite the mixture.

In the end if you put 91-93 octane gas to an engine designed to run on 87 octane, you are just throwing your money out the window.

I usually change my own oil on all the vehicles I've had, but I let the dealership do the first one. I ended up going 6k miles before changing it.

I thought I would ask since I just got my 2021 SX telluride but is there a way to manually override the maintenance intervals in the car computer? I just did my oil at around the 1000 mile mark. when I went over to the service interval on the drivers display by the tack it would not let me change it. it still showed I had like 6k miles left. Also is there a way to change the uvo app scheduling to the shorter intervals also?

You should be able to adjust the interval.

Not all Tellurides have that menu item, mine is one that doesn't.
That seems very odd. You don’t have User Settings -> Service Interval -> Adjust Interval? These settings are only accessible while the vehicle is running and in Park.

If you Google for information on it, it's a bit of a mystery... I know one person who says they have to Tellurides, built 1 month apart and one has the menu item the other doesn't. I've seen people claim that it's somwhow related to the trim level you have, but that seems debunked as well.

On page 4-77 of my owners manual, it says this... "To use the service interval menu, consult and authorized Kia dealer."

To me, that basically says Kia has to enable that feature. However, in my Google searchs , people have claimed they have gone to their dealers and they have been told they know nothing about it.

I guess I should contact my dealer and find out what they have to say. But then, I more or less made up my mind, that the default 7500 mile interval was actually not a bad thing. I plan on changing my oil every 5,000 miles, but if should get busy, I wouldn't be concerned about occasionally going out to 7,500 miles, so I view the 7,500 mile interval as a backup reminder to change my oil.

Do you still have the free UVO trial? Mine expired a while ago. I wonder if the UVO subscription enables or disables this feature. I know it changed the behavior of my UVO button in the overhead console. After UVO expired it started opening my mapping app in CarPlay.

Yeah, I have the UVO trial... I think that's on all new Tellurides isn't it?

I may just have to touch base with my Kia dealer... they keep calling me, reminding me they're their for me if I have any questions/needs.

I mean the 2021 manual pretty clearly states that to use the Service Interval menu you can talk to a authorized Kia dealer. So, I guess at this point I should call .

That makes me think that they are encouraging you to get hooked on the UVO app during the trial. After the trial if you don’t renew the subscription for a fee then they let you manage your service interval.

I’m at First Kia in Simi Valley for my 15,000 mile oil change/checkup service.

Convenience mostly.

My NorCal options: dealership (Hilltop)/oil change service (Seven Flags)/DIY at the family home, were too far away from my work and my days off trying to make friends at Borla and Haas and other cool companies in the Oxnard/Camarillo areas.

Hey @DarkMossJustin, please let me know how your service appointment goes at First Kia. I'll be getting my car in Colorado but First Kia is my local dealer and where I will service it. Read some not-so-great Yelp reviews about First Kia's service department, but I'm hoping it's not too bad. My alternative would be Kirby Kia in Ventura, but I don't want to give them my money after a bad sales experience there.

I generally don’t trust Yelp or online “reviews” and only go by first-hand experience.

So...

I will let you know how the 15,000 service goes. 😊

They are slammed with customers today, probably like most places before the big Memorial Day weekend.

Telly is parked, waiting for an available lift and technician, and should be getting the oil change done soon.

Telly will be switching to my preferred oil:

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 😍

Thumbs up. 👍

The service team at First Kia of Simi Valley were all friendly and professional.

Oil changed to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic, all systems checked out and tires properly inflated, plus a quick exterior wash and excellent service.

What more can I ask for?

Oh yeah, I asked for their business card. 😊

Telly drove perfectly around Simi and back to Cam.

So far so good.

Highly-recommended 👍

That's wonderful to hear! Wish I had been out and about today to catch a glimpse of your Telluride. Still haven't seen more than a few in Simi. I need to get out more, apparently.

Well, I've got oil for the next 4 years now. I found it for $12 for each 5 quart jug.

I was gonna use Costco's Kirtland Full synthetic oil, but this has ACEA A5/B5 certification , the Kirtland oil doesn't.

That’s a smoking deal for full synthetic oil. No wonder you bought so many 😂
