2023 Kia Telluride Discussion

1) I don’t know any PHEVs that can DC fast charge so lining up is not an issue. You charge at home, work, or 3-4 hours at a hotel, mall, etc.

2) I owned a RAV4 Prime the thing I loved most about it wasn’t the efficiency. It was the smoothness and shear power of 302hp when the electric motor and gas engine worked together. At low speeds it favored the rear and front electric motors and at highway speed I have tons of power too. Passing is a non issue. The Telly in my test drive was just meh. I’m buying it for cargo space but if there was a PHEV in the same size I’d buy that instantly.

3) PHEVs are often mechanically simpler. At least with the Prime, AWD is gas engine in front (with two small electric motors) and electric only in the rear. There’s no reverse gear either. Reverse is 100% electric. Gas engine is tuned to run optimally for usage 25mph or higher. No starter nor alternator either. Electrically they are more complex for sure.
Yup and Toyota captured the market opportunity for this transitional hybrid technology really well. So much so that it doesn’t make sense for other car makers to compete in the US market with both Toyota for PHEVs (or hybrids) AND all the new EV companies that are coming out too. More complex doesn’t mean harder to maintain. An EV just maximizes the benefits you listed of a PHEV without the complexity of a gas motor. No oil changes, no fluids and fewer moving parts. A motor going in reverse is just spinning in the opposite direction vs a reverse gear that requires mechanical parts to work together. Last week VinFast just announce they are going to spend $5B on a factory to build EVs in North Carolina. A VinFast VF9 is a 7-passenger EV SUV that sells for $56,000. The fact that Kia is committing to a production EV9 before announcing a hybrid Telluride tells me a lot.

I've owned various EVs in the past year or so: ID.4, Mach-E, 2 x RAV4 Primes (SE and XSE), 2 Model Ys (2021 and 2022), and a Model 3 (2022)

And I still prefer the Prime.. lol.

I think PHEVs are the future - especially in the US where everything is so spread out and we are never escaping from gas/ICE. EVs are fun but battery tech hasn't vastly improved over 10 years and we are moving in the opposite direction for batteries (cheaper and less energy dense). If you follow Tesla Model S forums... you will see batteries failing around 8-10 year mark and the replacements are expensive ($20K-$25K). Nickel/Cobalt batteries will never get cheaper - there simply is a raw material shortage. Instead Litihium-Iron (LFP/A123/LiFe) will be the future but they are less energy dense and thus range is reduced. Various EV are using them or plan to (base Fisker, base Rivian)

Battery longevity and costs are crazy enough that VinFast is leasing the battery ($100 to $150/month). You buy the car but the battery is leased.

Information is starting to trickle out about the 2023 Palisade, and there are some solid changes coming out… no, no new engine, audio system appears to be the same, etc., but the Palisade is getting a 12.3” nav system, smart parking assist in Calligraphy trim, and power folding mirrors (amazing the Palisade doesn‘t have these yet). Astonishingly, there is no mention of wireless CarPlay/Android Auto in the docs shown so far. Yikes…

So, are these hints of what to expect for the 2023 Telluride? I think a full digital dash and the 12.3” nav are givens in the SX-P, and hopefully smart parking assist too. It would be a real bummer if CarPlay/Android Auto weren’t wireless.

Doesn’t look like enough stuff to get me to trade in Night Ranger (gonna hold out for a full new model, or if the prices aren’t completely 🦇💩 crazy, an EV9), but if these changes also pan out for the Telluride they will be welcome.

What y’all say?
 
I agree-- dual 12.3" screens would be nice (I'm still hoping that they keep them separated; I personally like the tablet-layout look). Smart Park would also be nice. I can't believe that the Palisade didn't have power folding mirrors before, but I suppose that's a welcome change.

If I had to guess, the current head unit is already able to handle wireless Carplay/Android Auto (it makes sense- if the software in the smaller unit can, the one in the newer/larger unit can as well). It's supposedly a contractual dispute that prevents it from doing so, and until that is resolved, no model year will allow it with the larger screen. The question that remains is whether an over-the-air update will open the capability once the dispute is resolved. It remains a blemish on the Telluride, so I would think Hyundai/Kia would be in a hurry to remedy this, but alas, it's already been a couple of years.

would have liked a 12.3" nav screen. Digital cluster not such a big deal since the way I have my steering wheel positioned I can't really see a lot of the gauges. More customizable info on the HUD would be awesome. I would have cried if they went 14" on the nav screen.

n I'm getting my windshield replaced. That
I'm liking the updates. What do you think of the interior and exterior?
From what I see in the teaser images, this appears to be a X-Pro model and Iike the updates

1) Raised roof rails similar to Sorento
2) different front grille design
3) The DRLs seem to have a different design (no longer yellow? )
4) The lower portion of front bumper appears to be different, looks like there's a skid plate similar to Sorento

I'm not a fan of that massive screen, It appears to be similar to the new Cadillac Lyriq. Let's hope that steering wheel doesn't block some of the content

I really wish they offered a hybrid engine which would make the Telluride perfect !
 
The iconic and unique rectangular DRL, in yellow, are gone! That so sucks. It was so easy to pick out an oncoming Telly by the DRLs. Now it's another run of the mill SUV. No other SUV had that unique look. And the huge screen " to copy" others now on the market. We don't need more and bigger electronic flashy things in our face while we try to drive. I've had mine for a year and a half and still don't know or want to know all what the current infotainment screen does. I hate digging out the owners manual and try to find out how to do something that used to be simple, basic.

I suspect we might have to wait to hear on color and option combinations until ordering opens.
 
The factory hasn’t put out a single telluride today according to failcat. Makes me wonder if they are preparing for MY2023 production.
