• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... 1,7xx miles. Used Mobil1 extended performance full synthetic 5w30. KIA brand oil filter.

Impressions:

1. The plastic guard thing is flimsy and kind of goofy.

2. The oil drain plug was torqued on surprisingly tight from the factory, took some muscle to break it loose.

3. The "old" oil looked very clean. No particles, etc I could see. It comes out super hot (vs. the Chevy 350 I am used to).

4. The old filter was darker in color, but again, no particles, unremarkable. Replaced filter element, o-ring, crush washer.

5. I am not used to the element-style oil filter. You have to cram the new filter in the housing with some force to get it to seat. Then you can re-tighten the housing back on. It was not hard at all to loosen/remove. Was not torqued on crazy (like the drain plug was).

6. Re-fill back up top, check dipstick. Crank, no leaks, turn off. Check dipstick again, add a touch. All straightforward. It holds about 7 quarts (est, as I was pouring from 5-qt jugs).

Overall easy and quick. I used ramps and a basic funnel.

TOOLS: You need a 3/8 socket wrench, 10mm deepwell socket (for flimsy guard thing), 17mm (drain plug), and 27mm (filter housing). Small flathead screwdriver to remove o-ring. Rags.

Kia filter pack includes new o-ring & crush washer.

That's that!

I had my very first oil change done last week on my 2024 Telly which had at the time 920 miles at the Kia dealership. I specifically asked for the oil filter back (to inpsect) which had no signs of shavings or particles. The dealership DID NOT charge me for the oil change as part of our original purchase agreement. Personally, I wanted the dealership to do it for 2 reasons...1) I did not want even a hint that I did not follow the proper procedures for an "oil change" to cover any down the road "warranty issues". and 2) It was free!

Oil changes on these vehicles are very easy, I am documenting mileage, etc in a google document and saving all receipts. Will change at probably every 6k miles or so, exceeding the recommended 7,500.

OEM oil filters are on ebay for $50 for a 4-pack. The dealer has them for basically $10 each, but I have gotten pretty used to having everything shipped to my door. The oil I mentioned is $28.xx for a 5-qt jug at Walmart/AMZN. There are cheaper oil brands that I am certain are just as good. So it keeps me mildly entertained and mostly out of trouble. . .

I also ordered a generic/aftermarket oil drain plug with a magnet on the tip. Gimmick? Maybe, but won't hurt anything . . .

FYI, the 2024 has an 8000 mile/12 month interval for oil changes.

Unless you are one of most of us who fall under "severe" driving conditions and then it's a 5000 mile/6 month interval.

But I agree, the oil changes are not difficult.

It is kind of odd that they would describe basic in-city stop & go driving (which nearly everyone does) as "severe," but yeah 5k miles is fine, esp with synthetic oil. This type of oil I'm using claims that it's good for up to 20k miles, but who would actually do that? I mean buying fancy extended use oil, then leave it in there for a year or more (20,000 mi in a year seems like a lot for most people)? So kind of a goofy marketing strategy. . .

Can I ask where you picked up the magnetic oil drain plug?

I'm doing an oil change on my 24 SX-Prestige X-Pro. The replacement filter came with a crush washer, but it looks like there's a permanent one on the drain plug. Can anyone confirm this? I didn't see one you could take off, unless it dropped in the oil catch pan. Thanks in advance.

The one on the drain plug should slide off. Maybe it's kind of crammed on there.

Pro tip: replace the drain plug with the valvomax drain system device 😉

I found another thread and the poster said that the crush washer was painted along with the drain plug and they got it off with a chisel and hammer. This was exactly like mine. I scored it with a razor blade and did some prying, and it finally came off. I'm glad I went back and took it off again.

I had to do the same thing on my first oil change as it was painted on. I used a painter's spatula and it take a quick whack with a hammer to loosen it.

I have never seen or heard of that before. It looks pretty cool.

The thing costs 50 bucks and I'm telling you just 1 oil change with this thing is worth 50 bucks. Not splattering hot oil on yourself. I have them for all of my vehicles now.

Fumoto is another long time favorite for an oil drain valve. They make one for about 40 bucks which fits the Telluride.
