None of the manufacturers were ready when Google updated the Android Auto to have widescreen capabilities. Same issue was with Mercedes Benz and not sure if they have fixed it.I believe this is a case where KIA did not program the unit in the Telluride to operate at a widescreen resolution for Android Auto, partly since Android auto did not support widescreen at the time the Telluride was released. It clearly is now and Kia would just need an update to make it work. I'm slightly bothered by the fact that I can't utilize the entire screen when using Android Auto but honestly, Android Auto sucks so bad and is so buggy that I don't use it all that much anymore.
What phone are you using? And the cable you are using, is it an original branded cable?
