Bad Shock on a 2020 SX with factory towing package

Does anyone have a sound clip from their car? I am also hearing a clunking noise in the rear and suspect the shocks. I have had it in twice and the dealership says nope not it. They are telling me its because I have aftermarket 22" tires. I call bullshit. The noise comes from the rear driver's side only. If it were the tires, it would make the noise on all four tires.

If the clunk happens when you are on uneven terrain or your cargo and passenger weight aren't even distributed left to right, you could be simply hearing the mechanical shocks self-leveling reacting to not being level. I assume the insulators mute the sounds some. If you hear it all the time then you may have a problem with one or both shocks.

Thank you for this information! I hear it going over bumps. Not all bumps but most e.g. potholes, sewer covers, some speed bumps etc. I am going to try and capture the sound. I will also contact my dealership.

HCDCTelly, this is the way my self leveling rear shocks were doing too. The driver's side rear shock was making a thumping noise over most bumps and I made appointment for the TSB insulator repair. When dealer got it in, the dealer stated the self leveling rear shocks were locked up and replaced them both under warranty along with the insulators under the TSB bulletin under warranty. No thumping noises since then as rides like factory new now.

I could only hear my "thunking" when the vehicle was moving VERY SLOWLY. Took multiple trips to 2 diff dealers to get them to agree to replace the struts. Once completed it went back to normal (quiet). Good luck!

I am not sure if this tip was shared in this thread or another thread but someone mentioned that if the shocks are bad/shot you can hear the "knocking" sound simply by holding the top of the car by the roof rails (along the edge of the roof) and pushing the car back and forth. This creates a rocking motion and I can confirm that you can hear the "knocking" when doing this motion if your shocks are bad.

I tried this first in my garage as I suspected a shock failure. I then used that same technique to show the service advisor at my local Kia dealership. The shocks ended up getting replaced under warranty.
 
Have a 2020 SX with 71,000 miles. Factory hitch including load leveling shocks. I'm finally happy to say I fell for the extended warranty. One rear shock (load leveling) and TSB-113 were performed (both rear shock insulators replaced) @ 65,000. My mechanic says at 70,000 oil change "this car rides like a brick". I ride mainly smooth roads therefore I'm not noticing poor ride.
My question is:
1. Is anyone else experience close to mine?
2. Since I don't tow anything heavy, would a change to regular shocks be a benefit? I see above it's not a quick and easy changeover away from load leveling.
3. Any suggestions?

After reading the forum I get the feeling the dealership/extended warranty program will kick the can down the road while I approach 100K miles

I have a 2020 lx 89,000 miles I am out of warranty and will be replaceing my rear shocks myself looks pretty easy. Iam replacing them with

KYB 3440062 Excel-G Gas Shock, Black​

Easier job than replacing the self leveling ones from what I've read in multiple posts in this thread.

Our 2021 SX with Tow package was riding terribly (after driving 1300 miles with a tow hitch basket installed, and not that heavily loaded).. after having had the TSB-113 applied twice.. once by Central Kia of Plano, and once by Clay Cooley Kia of Irving (texas). After the second time of TSB-113.. rattle was 99% gone.. was only one thump going over a slow rolling hump... but the car rode terrible.. was louder.. Took it back to Central Kia of Plano... and the service technician , who drives a telly everyday, got in and immediately knew, the rear shocks needed replacing.

After that.. Car rides great.

So I am wondering .. Anyone actually use the tow hitch.. and not have a ruined ride? Or maybe the nivomat shocks were bad that the factory had... Is this tow package still an issue on the 23's?

I regret getting the tow package....
 
Good to know that swapping them for standard shocks is an option. I had read a few posts indicating that they could only be replace with an equal replacement.
I have the LX AND 76000 miles on it out of warranty. Replace the rear shocks was a breeze 3 bolts on each side took me a hour. At least something was easy and cheap after market KYB SHOCKS 60.00 a peace.

I have the sames issue with my '21 SX. Started cluncking and porposing in the rear a couple of months ago. Dealer clained the TSB would fix it -- it didn't, so back I go. Can hardly hang on to the steering wheel on a wavey road. The rear shocks are garbage. Go to the NTSB website and submit a defect report likie I did.
 
So after about 6,000 miles on the odometer, I started noticing knocking sound from the rear left wheel area at very low speeds. After eliminating every obvious potential reason by myself, I have decided to turn to the dealer with this as part of the 7,500mi service. They also couldn't find any obvious reason so after 2 days of investigation they decided to replace the shock to a new one and that solved the issue. The vehicle was never abused or went off-roading or anything like that, so it was simply a case of bad part from the factory.

Just sharing in case some else bumps into something similar...
I had a similar experience but I had a terrible service department. I had a noise coming from the left rear of my 2021 Telluride with self-leveling shocks. I searched on the Telluride owner’s forum and found out that others with self-leveling shocks had a similar noise and that the shocks needed to be replaced. I took it to Sunset Kia in Sarasota. The first time, they did not even look at it, they only did some recall work. The second time they replaced the top portion of the shocks per a Technical Service Bulletin. I asked if they test drove it to be sure the noise was gone – “absolutely” I was told. As soon as I pulled out of the dealership I heard the noise and I turned around and got the Service manager. He looked it over. I had a small dent in the roof and he said that was causing the noise under the car! I was in total disbelief and I told him that I thought it was the shocks and they needed to be replaced. He said “if I replace the shock and that’s not the problem you need to pay for it”. It was over $900. I told him to then tell me what the problem is. He said take it to a body shop I’ve been in this business 40 years and I’m sure it’s the dent in the roof. I thought it was ridiculous but I took it to a very reputable body shop and a manager went for a ride with me. He almost laughed to think the dent could cause the noise. He said, it’s clearly coming from under the car. I then made an appointment with Sunset Kia in Venice. They were able to diagnose the problem – the shocks – and get approval to replace them. It took a few weeks for approval because the other dealership had made the wrong repair. The new shocks solved the problem. The service manager at the first this dealership clearly did not know his job. Not only didn’t he know how to find the source of the noise (Venice used a device called chassis ears) but he sent me away without solving my problem and he didn’t seem to care to solve it.

My car is currently in the dealer (2020 SX with Towing Package) 43,000 miles. Right rear is bad shock and mount, but they told me they won't replace the left side, because nothing is wrong. How do you convince dealer to replace both sides from those that have done it?

They told me i would have to pay for the left side to be done. I just dont' want to make 2-3 trips for warranty work. Any help greatly appreciated!
 
Well the dreaded knocking noise got so bad that my wife said I am not driving it anymore. I changed the insulators on both right and left, which is piece of cake and just about anyone can do. Changing the insulator definitely helped as you could not go more than 50 feet without hearing a knock, but there is still a knock present that happens occasionally on each drive. I assume one of the shocks is also causing the noise. My questions is are the Hyundai shocks the same Kia because there is a $200 price difference for some reason. The stamped part number on the shock is 55367-S9000 while the suggested part number is 55360-S9000. Hyundai part number on the Palisade is 55367-S9300. I am thinking they are the exact same part. In fact I purchased the insulator from Hyundai for $13 and Kia wanted $50.

Just got the SX back with new shocks. They applied the TSB twice, then had to apply to the factory for replacement which took four weeks. Rides like it was new now.

My new concern is what to plan on when warranty runs out and they fail again.

My hope is that someone will make an aftermarket shock for our application and a heck of a lot cheaper. I would rather swap for a name brand shock than to keep purchasing and installing Kia's junk shock at $500+ each.
