• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Cold start screeching noise

Never mind, you can compare yours with the one I uploaded, I'm interested to learn if they sound similar.

I have tried to download the 30 second video but cannot get the web page to download a video from my phone and the file is too big to email to my computer. I would love to get this out there but not sure how.
Upload to youtube and then post the link to the video.

Where is the video?
Check post #9, you will find a link to google drive. If you have google account, you can also upload your video to your folder, and get a share link to post here.

Well, I hear another boiling kettle:eek:. This is exactly the same noise I get from my Telly, please report this to NHTSA and attach the link as evidence. We need to push on this!

I was able to text the video to Midwest Kia in Wichita. They said they think it sounds like a vacuum issue but cannot do anything until I bring it in. I asked them to report it to Kia and they said they cannot report anything until they see the car. I am 2 hours away and I run a mortuary and my wife is a teacher and neither of us can take off to run the car down to them. They said I could call Kia and have roadside service tow it to them but I am not real comfortable about that. This is the 8th day in a row we have had this noise. The dealer said this should not cause any damage to the engine but need to see it to ensure no future issues caused by this noise.

This is the tricky part, you will need to drop off the vehicle and make sure it's cooled down fully, so earliest the dealer can look at it is next day, and they have only 30s or so. Besides that, it's getting warmer in your area in just few days, the noise may just disappear itself...

This is what I sent to the NHTSA:
2021 Kia Telluride, February 13, 2021. Temperatures are single digits or below and got worse as the week went on. Started the engine and a loud squeal or whistling noise came from the top of the engine. Last about 30 seconds then slowly stops. Engine also starts to sound like it has more power once noise stops. Been going on for the last 8 days. Belts and pulleys seem to be working fine and cannot see any issues. Sound like it is coming from under the engine cover but do not want to remove cover cause too cold and do not want to jeopardize warranty stipulations. Contacted Midwest Kia in Wichita, Kansas. Sent them a video and they think it is a vacuum leak of some kind. Midwest Kia said they cannot report it to Kia until they can see the car but we are 2 hours away and cannot get off work to take it and need our car for work. I own a mortuary and have funerals and my wife is a teacher and cannot get substitutes do to covid. I said based on my research it sounds like intake manifold. On the Kia forums, many people experiencing these very cold temps are experiencing the same noise and encouraged me to report the issue. I feel it is cold related and hope Kia looks into this problem. This only happens when the car has been sitting for several hours. If we use it off and on without sitting too long the noise does not happen. Car runs great once the noise stops.

For owner with the cold start noise problem, please report the problem to NHTSA if you can, I have done so and passed their review process. I'm not sure the procedure in Canada, but US owners should be able to report. You need to upload evidence with your complaint, I used a pdf with link to my video.
unfortunately we do not have such a tool for dealing with the manufacturer in Canada.🤧

Hey folks, my SXP recently had screeching noise from the hood when I start the engine first thing in the morning, it lasts about 10 seconds then fades away. It happens more frequently when it’s freezing cold. Did some search and the most possible reason seems to be loose engine belt that slips in cold weather, but this shouldn’t happen in a 1 year old car. We’ve been very satisfied about our Telly and this is the only issue we’ve found.
Will have the first oil change next week and also have the dealership look into this, hopefully it can be corrected and I will post update.
I've been seeing this for a few days now. Start the car in extremely cold conditions(I live in Michigan) and hear this sound every time for like 10-15 seconds. Is this what it sounds like ?

Yep!

Exactly the same, like what I've suggested please bring this to your dealership and have them report to Kia. You can also file complaint to NHTSA.

Yes. Pretty much the same noise we had on our 2021. Ours went for about 30 seconds to a minute. I sent the video to my dealer and they feel it is a vacuum issue possibly the intake manifold. In my video, you can see the belt and pulleys working fine and I had a guy locally check out my belt and pulleys and he said they looked fine. My noise seems to come from under the engine cover. We would have pulled the cover but it was way too cold to mess with and he was afraid it would interfere with warranty repairs. After listening to it several times it sounds to me more like a whistle rather than a screech sound a belt would make. In talking with the dealer they said the reason they think it is a vacuum rather than a belt is the noise it made and that the engine seemed to power up more once the noise stopped. I was told nothing can be done with Kia until I bring it in but we live so far away from the dealer and our jobs prevent us from getting down there. Please, if you can get to the dealer and have them get this reported it would help us all and maybe prompt a recall to fix the problem. I also reported the problem to the NHTSA.

So today I found that the engine rpm fluctuates in between 1200-1400 during the initial 30-40 s, not sure if this an indicator to air/vacuum problem. Also the noise disappeared right after I pressed down the brake pad, this happened twice today, maybe coincidence, but that didn't change the rpm fluctuation.

Take a look on your tachometer if your area is cold.

this is not big problem, but the engine speed should be stable. If, during a cold start, it does not hold revolutions and they jump, then there is a problem with the air or fuel supply.

In Kansas we are still waking up to single digits with negative numbers with wind chill. The last couple of days our Telluride is still whistling but it is only for a few seconds and not as loud. I suspect that the noise will go away once we start getting up into the 20's and 30's. I think KIA really needs to look at this issue and try and figure out what is going on with the noise during cold temps. Don't get me wrong, we still love our vehicle and is the best family SUV we have ever owned, but this whistling issue really takes the shine off of what is over all a really great vehicle.

The whistle noise can be shorter and quieter sometime even in colder weather, don't know why. Shifting into gear, either R or D eliminates the noise, I don't know the exact reason but just verified this morning.
