Cold start screeching noise

Had a chance today to record the noise, it's 23F outside, the noise seems to come from the engine (IMG_4895.mp4), have you guys heard this from your Telluride?
Another service is scheduled on next Wed, but it won't be cold enough then, I will show them the video.

I get that same sound on both my sedona and telluride on very cold morning start up.

What oil brand are you using? Also if you live where it gets below -20 you should use 0w30.

Dealer was able to get the noise to happen this am for a bit (they had the car all weekend) but it went away before they could determine exactly what it was for sure.

That said, they are going to replace the idler pulley assembly and have ordered it. They are not 100% sure when it will arrive due to supply chain issues but I'll post the work order and the results here.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will record the sound before the service, actually 'We cannot duplicate the problem' is something that worries me more. Tried to find some videos about slipping belt, but it sounds intermittent or rhythmic, yet the noise from my car is high pitch and continuous, that makes me suspect about the belt. It seems to be a quite common thing on Kia models but I haven't seen it from Telluride, I live in Central New York where temperature varies a lot in a year and winter could be very cold, typically the colder the weather, the louder/longer the noise, but only happens in cold morning.

Spoke to my mechanic and showed him the video. He believes it’s a matter of a very cold start and the oil not properly lubricating the engine.

Got my car back today. Service advisor said he never saw these parts replaced on a new car before. they replaced the idler pully and also the tensioner. It will get cold enough tonight for me to test in the am.

edit: bad news. It didn't work.

Thanks all! Look forward to any diagnosis. My wife's Telly is making the noise the last several days in the cold Michigan winter mornings. I also did a general Google search for the issue not specifying Telluride and Kia and it seemed that a lot of responses (but not all) were directed to power steering fluid being too cold for the pump to effectively push the hydraulic fluid around.

Thanks for the update! Hopefully this cures the problem - although it would be sad if all of our vehicles needed such parts for them being so new. Look forward to hearing if this stops the issue.

You might need a new mechanic. It is not the engine internals. Maybe they meant a bearing or something is rubbing.

Mine did this last year and I do oil analysis. Engine has no wear issues - best of any vehicle I have ever owned. I’m due to change oil soonish and my vehicle has done this a lot this year. My next oil analysis which should be in about 800 miles from now should confirm how bad a harsh winter has been.

This sound is likely the belt tensioner/ very cold belt. My experience with past vehicles is this isn’t a big deal. Part warms up in a few seconds, sound stops and life goes on. Never had to replace a part from this issue and pretty much every vehicle I have owned in my life has done it due to where I live.

The Telluride does not have power steering fluid. It has electric power steering, so that's not the source of our screech.

I got this one too! In addition to the vibration and engine auto start and rattling in roof.

Just discovered today after starting the vehicles after 2 days in -15 C.

And also the battery couldn’t crank up - had to be jumped.

Do I have it all for 2021 telluride?

Most of us have been down the road of looking at the belts, tensioners, etc. It doesn't seem to be the issue. We are back at square one. I know Kia looked at the belts, tensioners, and said it all looked fine. Since it was about 30 degrees, they were unable to replicate it. We've had some say it could be an air intake problem, a vacuum seal, my mechanic believes its a metal on metal sound from the engine and has guessed that it could be the oil not properly circulating through the engine upon startup. So....here we are.

I was thinking that, and I might have a solution. On Thursday, I went and had an oil change and went with full synthetic 5w30 Valvoline Long Life Oil. With the storm that hit the east coast yesterday, it was about 15 degrees out last night. I cleaned off the car and started it (expecting to hear the noise). Nothing. It was quiet. I’m going out in a few minutes; it’s in the teens again today. Let’s see.

Prior to this current oil change, I was using whatever the dealer put into the Telly at my last oil change.

Unfortunately the culprit doesn't lie in the pulleys, belts, etc. The dealership did take the belt out and started the car in the freezing morning and it made the noise, but they didn't have a second chance to hear it one more time, so here is the dilemma of this issue, your dealership only has 20 seconds a day to diagnose. The mechanic who worked on it thought the problem lies in the intake manifold and I guess he's probably right because I can cut off the noise by shifting to either D or R which changes the throttle position. The service manager told me that they cannot open and inspect the intake manifold until KIA admits there's such a problem, otherwise they cannot get reimbursement of the labor. BTW, the above discussion happened a year ago and we have filed complaints, KIA still has no solution.
