Excessive oil consumption

🤖 AI Summary

No AI summary has been generated for this thread yet.
Another unhappy owner who never realized there's no "low oil" light until it was too late...... 102k miles and somehow between oil changes we found ourselves almost 3 quarts short, with rough idle symptoms. Never had any indication of excessive consumption until now, and we have no oil spots in the driveway.

The rough idle seems to have gone away with fresh oil in the system, but I have no idea what damage may have been done to the Telly in the meantime. It almost stalled a couple of times before we were able to bring it in.

My 2021 has had 5000 mile synthetic oil changes. When I started doing it myself at 54000 miles, it got dirty much faster than normal. I believe it was cleaning up carbon that the dealer oil was allowing to build up. The dealer used API SN oil, which was not up to the demands of direct injection. API SP and soon to be SQ are supposed to be better at keeping it clean, but for anyone with an older Telluride, I would get a series of changes with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum or Valvoline Restore and Protect.

I'm sorry for your issue. I can say that Kia Corporation did right by me. They did replace my engine at 119,000 miles. However I identified the problem back at 96,000 miles before my warranty expired. I made sure it was documented with my dealership when I first noticed the heavy oil consumption.

I am not sure if they will use that as an excuse to not offer to replace your engine since the warranty did expire. Even with an extended warranty up to 120,000 miles, they told me that the extended warranty would not have covered an engine replacement. We did a 1000 mile oil consumption test somewhere around 105,000 miles which showed that I burned almost 4 quarts of oil in 1000 miles. Based upon that Kia offered to replace the engine.

The head mechanic at my dealership told me he replaced three more engines in the two weeks after my engine replacement. So no doubt Kia is aware of the issue and is offering replacements. You will just have to make a very strong argument that it was clearly a problem before your warranty expired even if you didn't recognize it as such.

Good luck, keep us posted after your check up.

Thanks for all of this info! And it's somewhat encouraging. I'm glad they did the right thing for you.

We were also hit the broken sunroof issue recently (that seems somewhat common as well), and we're beginning to consider selling the Telly to Carmax and moving on. We'll see. Our Telly experience was quite good until about 80k miles. Since then we've had to replace the alternator, radiator and transmission (this one was covered). Now the sunroof and possible issue with the engine.

OMG! My sunroof broke only a month after getting my engine replaced! I just got my car back!! I wasn't aware there was a "sunroof issue."
I'm going to hang onto my Telluride for now. The sunroof is the only thing I've had to fix out of pocket (at my expense). So given I have a brand new engine at 119,000 miles I figure I'll continue to see how the car holds up. Under warranty I had electrical wiring/harness replacement and both rear shock replacement. I paid $1100 for my premium extended warranty at the time I bought my car. So no doubt I got my moneys worth out of that extended warranty. Given I'm only out of pocket about 4000 with this recent sunroof issue, I think I'm ahead of the game right now. I agree if one more major expense occurs I probably will sell my vehicle. Now I have to go look up the sunroof issue in the threads and see what that's all about!🤣

Off-topic, but I noticed you have the Dune Brown in your Telluride.

I’m still loving my choice of Nappa leather color.

You still happy with it?

Best color combo ever. I get compliments every time someone sees it.

I'm still loosing oil, but slightly compared to earlier this year which I solved with my previous fixes.
That's to be expected with 128k on the vehicle.

I'm going to add an oil catch can to possibly keep the intake fouling down, which could help with performance and oil loss.
Anyone with experience in doing this modification?

Surprisingly, my 2020 is running like a charm.
Just put new tires on her.
The K&N air filter is nice too. Wish I'd done that earlier.

My only complaints are:
The dealership "fix" to parking break coming on all the darn time.
I hate it and didn't need it.
It's gets in the way a lot under certain circumstances.
Also, the darn auto stop feature bugs me, but is livable.
I looked into a fix for that but didn't follow through.
I'll be taking the cell transmission out that reports usage data back to Kia.
I should have done that years ago.

Thanks

What is K&N air filter?

You can push down autostop button then slip a paper clip in space to hold it down. Might solve your issue.

How do you take out cell transmission to Kia?

K&N is a brand of higher end air filters often for performance. Some are oil coated and reusable by washing.
Good idea with the paper lock. Better than the kit to connect to it and cut it out.
Cellular transmission is from the data unit.
I haven't decided to nip it at the unit or just at the antenna with a snubber load, a 75 ohm power resistor with heatsink.
I'll see what works.

2021 Telluride SX with only 30K on the odo.
I just returned from a 1850-mile road trip. Before I left, I had the dealer do an oil change and to check the rear shocks. The shocks were bad, but the dealer had to order the replacements, and they wouldn't be in before I left, so I had to go on the trip with the faulty shocks. Not a big deal. Back to the oil issue, I checked the dipstick before I started my trip, and the level was right at the full line. As soon as I returned from my trip, one of the first things I did was to check the oil level. There was no discernible change in oil level. She behaved beautifully and gave me an average of 26 mpg. And just today, the shocks were replaced. I agree with DarkMossJustin, it's a great car and I am very happy with it.

Happy for you. But most of us with the oil burning issue are seeing it at 75k-100k miles. You are a loooong way off from that mile marker. You are 1/3 of the way there. Shocks going out at 30k beats even me who was not happy mine cracked at 40k. Both replaced at no cost. And I just got a brand new engine at 119k. So I'm happy with Kia taking responsibility for the issues. But honestly neither issue should have occurred at the mileage that it did occur. I owned both a Ford Explorer and a Chevy Trailblazer before my Telluride. Sold/traded both when they were at 200k. Sold a Honda CRV to Carvana at 219k. The only thing I ever replaced on ANY of those vehicles (either under warranty or not), were batteries, tires, windshield wipers, and one belt. Let's see what happens as you near 100k. I hope Kia will still be covering the cost of replacing engines at that time.

Well, as long as there are no other major issues, at my rate of putting on mileage, I will never reach that high mileage mark where this issue starts to be a problem. I figure I have another two years at most before I sell it. I probably won't reach 50K miles. Fingers crossed.

Thanks

i added the j&l catch can with the extension ( https://www.jlosc.com/ )...pretty easy install and their directions are good

i never had the parking break "fix" done the last time i went so ours doesn't turn on

i bought a part that gives the autostop button memory so it never turns on now when i start the car ( Autostop Eliminator for 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 Kia Telluride )
