New guy here

Good morning all. I'm a retired BMW shop (37 years) owner. Now reducing my BMW fleet drastically and having just picked up a 24 Telly LX as my daily. After doing a great deal of research and shopping (boy has my industry changed!) I'm starting to enjoy my new ride. It wasn't an easy find, wanting a second row bench seat in lieu of the all too common Captain's Chairs. Also, since I'm rather tall, I've already modified the drivers seat mount to provide me with some much needed thigh support on those longer drives, by raising it further up off the floor.

I've also ordered/received a (trailer) receiver (E Trailer) and grille guards from the VoltShop to protect my A/C condenser. Which, at a scant 2K miles, already has it's first tube strike from road debris. Currently the A/C isn't affected thank goodness. I plan to install both (pulling front bumper cover off and installing grille guards from behind) next week when I visit the gentleman I sold my shop to.

I'm a neophyte to the Kia marque and am intrigued by any possibilities of coding/programming to better personalize and/or upgrade some of the many features installed/not currently installed on this puppy.

Although I'm a trained BMW Master Technician, there may be times I can possibly offer insights here?

There is absolutely no reason to pull your bumber off to install the grill screens behind the grill. Please don't go to all that trouble! I believe you instructions explain how. VoltShop has information, but basically you just put them through from the outside. They fit right through the ginormous holes that cause the need for them! Easy to do!

Welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up. I'm glad you found us. I imagine you're pretty familiar with how far Kia has come over the years. Outside of the performance end of things, is there anything the Telluride is missing compared to BMW SUVs?

A Very good question! Naturally there is. However, to sit here and call them out one by one would be laborious. In brief, things like quality of seats, leather, bells & whistles (Farkels in the BMW Motorcycle community) ability to take a corner at higher speed, all come to mind. There's also having key #2 approach the car and all of the radio stations, seat/mirror memory and climate preferences come to the fore upon entering the vehicle... Does one really need such?

Then there's the maintenance costs over the lifespan of the vehicle. Of which, was one of my primary motivations. Having owned a (honest BTW) independent BMW repair facility most of my life. I more than most, understand the financial aspects of owning a modern German automobile.

The real question is: Is the extra $20-$42K worth it? It depends on the individual and their disposable income ratio. To each their own. Having owned M3's, M-5's, racecars etc. during my career tenure, I see no need to justify the outlay anymore. My focus about what a car should has shifted over my time in this business. Which, I started turning wrenches professionally in 1977!

If/when I come to participate more; You'll find that my favorite vehicles have more substantive things (engine/space/capability) over features. Read: sunroofs, woofers mounted in the floor, flex ray entertainment system, power liftgates etc, etc. I'll choose a stripped next rung up the ladder vehicle; VS one one rung down loaded with all of the options. But that's just me.

So far (only 2,000 miles) the Telly is everything I wanted/expected. So long as my valve springs don't break and my oil filter housing doesn't warp (ALL VERY NORMAL IN THE GERMAN CAR WORLD BTW, for those of you on a "freak out") I'll be fine.

Makes sense to me! Yes, even outside of performance, there are a few niceties that the higher priced vehicles have. But like you said, are they worth the up charge? That does entirely depend on the person... Most of the important things one needs, plus some, are available in more mainstream vehicles these days. The playing field is leveling...

I was remis of mentioning: The speed at which automotive technology advances anymore is incredible. Also naturally, at a reduced cost is noteworthy. Any 2025 automobile will come standard with features that would have been at the "cutting edge" in 2020.

Did you know that every automobile manufacturer buys/owns just about every vehicle on the planet (No, not a Bugatti Veyron) for use/evaluation/reverse engineering? They are used by the engineering staff, replete with notebooks and log books. This is at the heart of why most vehicles start to morph into the same as the next brand and technology features to boot. This has been going on since the late 1980's.

There is absolutely no reason to pull your bumber off to install the grill screens behind the grill. Please don't go to all that trouble! I believe you instructions explain how. Generally, I'd agree. However, given that pilling bumper skins was a part of daily life for me and my technicians, it's De Rigueur for me. I'm a bit OCD and it would just eat me up if knowing there was a better way of hiding the zip ties (and didn't) because I've left the bumper skin on.
