New Telluride vs Used Audi Q7 ????

The Audi will definitely handle better, I test drove the SUV and owned two sedans but the Telluride wins with reliability. Audi’s break down and are expensive to repair. And the telluride handles and accelerates well for a heavy vehicle.

My CPO A6 (only 3 years old at the time) was worth 25% value of what I bought at 4 years earlier when I traded it in. Only drove 6k miles per year on it. It was still in the same pristine condition as when I purchased cosmetic-wise. Common excuse all dealers had when justifying the price, “I can’t sell this on my lot because the model year is too old. It’s going to auction so I can’t make much on it.”

So yes, it is a steal when you compare used to new price, but when you trade it back in, expect to have the same principal applied to the car’s value.

here's a depreciation chart for a q7 and it shows 17 is a sweet spot with 18 and 19 also good values. it does seem somewhat steeper than other brands though.

just reporting back ...ended up with a 18 vw atlas with 15kmi for $34k (actual sticker was $51k). it is a top of the line sel premium with awd and all the tech goodies including a cool full digital dash that even a telluride is missing. it also has a factory 6yr 72k mi b2b warranty of which 4 yr 4mos is currently left. its a poor man's audi sort of but with much more utility. of course not as much power as the q7 but still adequate.

Sounds like a great decision. Looks very nice.

thanks...it sort of has the telluride vibe from the side profile or other way around is it ;) its in perfect shape and seems like previous owner took great care with it. only concern is the vw reliability but the long warranty will cover most issues in the next 4+ yrs.

@sidewinder glad you were able to settle on a car. I was also looking at SEL premium trim as well when I was considering a VW. Let us know how you end up feeling about the digital dash a few months from now. 😉

hehe its my wife's ride and she doesn't really care about it either way...but i'm more of a gadget freak and get excited about them ;) if we went with the telluride a comparable trim would be the sxp which harder to find than toilet paper or disinfectant wipes ;) not to mention the giant hit in first year depreciation. that said atlas is a nice compromise and happy with the full 4+ year warranty that is left on it. i assume you own a telluride now and what were your thoughts on the atlas?

I am waiting on my EX order, but the Atlas would be my second choice because of the nice big cargo space. I also have a 2017 Golf Sportwagen w/ 4motion. It has adaptive cruise and all the safety features, and has been a good car with no reliability issues. The dash also has a similar layout to the Atlas (but not all digital).

I sincerely wish you lots of luck with the Atlas. Personally, I wouldn't purchase an Atlas at 25% of MSRP.

My Mercedes Dealership service also handles the VW store. The service manager is a good friend and he is always talking (unsolicited) about how crappy the Atlas is. More problems than any other vehicle, in his words. The more equipment/technology, the more time they spend in the shop. You'll be glad for the warranty. Hope you get complimentary loaners!

i assume you own a telluride now and what were your thoughts on the atlas?

Yes, I have the SXP. I think the best thing the Atlas had going for it was the bench seat option for top trim level and the best 2nd row access to the third row, even with car seats installed.

Aside from that I immediately gravitated to the Telluride for it’s uniqueness (first year model), design, larger third row, amber LED, Blind view monitor, Nappa leather, more luxurious 2nd row (first ventilated seats in this segment), rear passengers climate vents up top, plethora of USB outlets, best in class cruise control, and the list goes on. But these are majority of the ones that stick out in my memory in terms of advantages over the Atlas.

no doubt sxp is a nice ride but then again i didn't have to pay full retail and wait months...atlas is coming up on 2 years old now but still holds its own with the telluride in terms of features. it was even ahead of its time with the full digital dash which kia still doesn't have 2 years later. not that i need it but there is parking assist which is a neat feature that could be useful for some. i get that vw is not stellar in the reliability dept but i figure its a roll of the dice for any car and vw just happen to have higher odds ;) if there are problems at least its not out of my pocket for the next 4+ years.

well its been fun talking to everyone and too bad i won't be frequenting this forum going forward for obvious reasons. hope the best to all and stay safe!

Hey all... first post on this forum and I'm reviving this thread to see if anyone else has come from a Q7 to a Telluride? We have a 2017 Q7 Prestige, black optics package in silver and it's been rock solid. Very few issues, other than eating a set of tires every 25k miles. We came from a Volvo XC90 that spent too many days in the shop and not enough on the road. Hope to never go back to Volvo.

Now we're looking around at what's next and I can't stop looking at this Kia. The vehicle seems like it checks all the boxes for the right price. The dealership experience however, is forcing me to lower my standards. Just a quick stroll though the dealer's lot made me wonder what kind of care I would get when bringing it in for service. Audi's dealerships are top notch with incredible attention to detail.

Kia's sales and service?... well, that's to be seen. Hope I don't need to go there too often.

Anyone else care to chime in coming from Audi to Kia? We'd consider a SX Nightfall edtion with all the options.

Here's our Q7 and my old Z too.

@GeoJoe I came from a 2012 Audi A6 prestige. I had been very accustomed to the Audi service department more than I would have like since they had a hard time tracing a water leak into the interior (~3 years). By the time they fixed it I traded in for a Telluride.

Although I haven’t gone in for my first Telluride service yet, I am certain you will not be receiving the same quality experience as you did for Audi service visits. Mainstream brands (Kia, Toyota, Honda) have way too many customers compared to Audi in their service department. You will not get a loaner offered for all types of visits, likely only major services/repairs. Even then it will probably be a rental company since they will probably run out of Kia’s. Not all their cars are fun to drive like how Audi sedans and SUVs are anyway. Not sure if Kia dealerships provide complimentary car washing every visit as well. It will be cramped, limited seating for customers to wait. You won’t have nice large leather seats to wait in, fresh pastries brought daily, gourmet coffee machines and free water bottles.

Basically, be prepared to downgrade your expectations when taking your Telluride in for service. But at least while you have your Telluride at home, you will be happy knowing you spent a lot less for a Kia prestige than an Audi prestige and got similar if not some better features (ie remote start, ventilated rear seats, premium headliner, blind view monitor, rear shades, more spacious 3rd row).

The sales experience for me wasn’t terrible. Just the same general differences is the offices won’t look as nice as Audi dealerships.

Hi all,
Any thoughts on a 2017/18 used Audi Q7 vs a new Telluride? I realize the Audi is classed as a luxury vehicle and offers more power in the 3.0 liter version. I love the look of the Telluride and a loaded SX model would compare in price, size and features etc to a low mileage used 3.0 Q7 (budget mid/high $40k’s) I’ve never owned a Kia but I’m not a brand snob. The longer Kia warranty is a huge plus but the Q7 is a solid machine and highly recommended by many “expert reviews” Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!
My bother has had nothing but issues with his new Q7. Even the dealership is ready to offer him lemon law exchange. They've had car in the shop trying to fix the same problem longer than he has had it to drive. Were it not for my long wait with my Telluride order (December 2019 order, expected delivery in November), he's thinking the Kia was the better choice. Buyers regret on a 70k car... Ouch!

Now you see why an Audi oil change is $250+!!

Big thanks for the reply.... sounds about what I expected. I'd hope to not have to visit the dealer with the reliability reputation, but still.... now I just need to find the right one.
