New Telluride vs Used Audi Q7 ????

Well I am exactly in the same boat but my situation is even more complicated.
If I were in the US I would have purchased a 2017 q7. Audi pure protection is usually around $5,000 for 6 years. So keeping maintenance aside, I think you will be covered for any other expenses.
Now the cost side of it, let’s say both cars are 45k. For Audi you will spend extra 5,000 on extended warranty. Let’s say you decide on selling them after 5 years and putting 60,000 miles. For q7 you’re looking at 15k to 20k for a trade in while for telluride you should be able to get 20k to 25k.
Again keeping maintenance aside, I think you’re looking at 10 grand more for a q7 over a period of 5 years. That’s my observation so far.
My situation is even more complicated because I am in Canada for work and will be moving back to US next year. I have to consider how selling a Canadian vehicle in US will play out and then extended warranties don’t work across the border, fun fun fun!!!

If I were able to not have a 3rd row I would buy the new VW Atlas Cross Sport. Call it a poor mans Q8! So with that in mind, I should also mention if you particularly like the German driving dynamic, I have been extremely happy with my 2018 VW Atlas to date. I made the mistake of not buying the Premium trim and didn’t get a handful of features I would have really liked to have, but overall it is truly a fantastic and very roomy SUV. It shares its chassis with the Q7, but is not nearly as luxurious. Right now I could go buy the Premium SEL and with current incentives drive off the lot for around $44k.
Full transparency, I just ordered a Telluride SXP and am waiting for it. It was not an easy choice between those two to me though. Yes the Kia is definitely a more luxurious vehicle than the VW, but the style, handling, digital dash, etc on the Atlas Premium is very compelling and I wouldn’t be waiting 4 months. Their warranties are also very comparable. Honestly it really came down to not wanting the same car two leases in a row.
One other call out, if you are using the 3rd row regularly and have front facing car seats in the second row go with the Atlas! The ability to tip the seats forward without removing a car seat is amazing and it’s the only car in the segment to have it.

Chevy traverse seats operate the same way.

I also cross-shopped a pre-owned Q7 with the telluride. As someone who’s owned 4 Audis (2 A4s and 2 allroads) and loves the brand, I still ordered the SXP. The Q7’s styling is just too dated and boring. Also, the interiors are maybe just too familiar to me having spent so much time in the drivers seat of an Audi. I would look at the pics of CPO Q7s and felt like it was all the same car I’m used to.

I needed something new.

what's your take on extended warranties for Audis? I wanted to buy a 2017 Q7 here in toronto but i am moving to US next year and no company in the US is agreeing to provide extended warranty for a canadian vehicle. so my only option is to get one without extended warranty and I am not sure whether it's a good idea to have a vehicle with so many electrical components without the warranty!

That question would probably be better asked in an Audi forum, but the cost is going to be very high. If you are concerned about warranty when used, your best bet may be to buy an Audi Certified Pre-Owned - you'll pay more, but the CPO will give you extended manufacturer warranty on a used vehicle. You'd have to see if it would be honored in US... but I don't see why it wouldn't if it's from manufacturer. For comparison, the extended warranty on Telluride is being offered for $1458 on this forum (new purchase only). Anything that goes wrong with Telluride will just be much less expensive to fix.

Here's a relevant post on an Audi forum...

CPO warranty for a vehicle purchased in Canada gets voided when you take it to the US permanently: that's what i was told by the dealership. Can you pls send me the link for Audi forum? I just got a quote from IA finance for $5,500 CAD plus taxes for 3 years and unlimited mileage that will cover me in the US and Canada both, which i think is too much. In the US you get it for $5,050 USD for 6 years thru Audi Pure Protection

I posted it above at bottom. Check Audi forums though... that one was from 2018. Yes, they will be very expensive.

Hi all,
Any thoughts on a 2017/18 used Audi Q7 vs a new Telluride? I realize the Audi is classed as a luxury vehicle and offers more power in the 3.0 liter version. I love the look of the Telluride and a loaded SX model would compare in price, size and features etc to a low mileage used 3.0 Q7 (budget mid/high $40k’s) I’ve never owned a Kia but I’m not a brand snob. The longer Kia warranty is a huge plus but the Q7 is a solid machine and highly recommended by many “expert reviews” Any thoughts would be appreciated!!!
Traded my 2018 Audi Q7 3.o with prestige for a Telleuride S with the prestige package. Best decision I ever made. Features and electronic safety systems more expansive and work way better. To replace Q7 brakes, you must replace all the rotors $3,000 plus. Telluride $300. Audi recommends wheel alignment every 10,000 miles At a cost of a $1000 plus. They claim that all the cameras, sonars, radars have to be realigned & its more than a full day's work. Q7 has no spare tire and has expensive run flat tires. Telluride Has a full size spare tire and normally priced tires. Navigation Superior on the Kia & runs on regular @ 20 mpg. Prestige package difficult to get but really worth it.

If you enjoy spending 4k every 20k for brake pads, rotors, and tires, go with the Q7.

This has been a great thread. We are in the market for the fully loaded SXP, and have a "order" on one, with no ETA. I just got a call from Manteca KIA and they want $6900 over MSRP. This puts me in range of real luxury vehicles - vs the wannabe Kia. Greedy KIA dealers will push some of the premium sales opportunities to other brands. We love the Telluride, and the fact it was value based, but not when you add dealer "adjustments". The luxury dealers are more willing to work with us and offer substantial discounts. We can get an extended warrantee on any brand vehicle. When you factor in depreciation, what to do think the $5 to $10K dealer add is going to be worth in six months? Big fat zero. We have been to every KIA dealer in our area, same story, slimy, cocky, greedy. Ratings for most Kia service dealers in our area is in the dumps as well. Now finally factoring in, windshield issues, rear hatch, and other well documented complaints...reliability is still unknown for a vehicle this new. I am starting to seriously think that waiting for the Telluride might be a mistake for us.

Made a deal with a Kia dealer just outside of Washington DC. Flew from Orlando to DC with an agreed to $3,000 over MSRP. Upon landing in DC, dealer sold it out under me, to someone else for more money. Through exhaustive searching, I found one in Florida again I paid $3,000 over MSRP. I use Consumer Reports as well as Truecar, I always pride myself with getting really great deals and great financing, I do my homework. To get my Telluride SX with prestige package, I put my hands up, surrendered and paid the $3,000 desler vig, yes I'm glad I did I love the Telluride.

Had an agreed upon price, drove three hours and had them sell it out from under us. They were putting the plate on when I drove in. Greed.

Yes, you've definitely had some poor experiences. It's just a hot commodity right now in a hot market. Would you and I pay a $3k plus for a Market Adjustment? No, but plenty of others will apparently. As long as you can wait it out (5-6 months from order for SX-P) and negotiate up front with an honest dealership, you'll be okay. Meaning: make sure they won't jack up price when order arrives. I made an order with an honest dealership and was fine. Buying an SX-P from existing inventory is next to impossible for most, and it's like winning the lottery if you are able to do it - most likely with a markup.

Chasing unsold inventory will only leave you frustrated. I had many dealers try to make deals over the phone to try to get me to travel and I refused without a sales order / contract in place to avoid them selling out from under me. Needless to say, I never got that contract from any dealer, so I quickly understood that traveling to any dealership was futile. Someone else would always beat me to the purchase. And that was in March and April! Only worse now.

Your experiences could turn you off the Kia brand, but if you want a luxury vehicle like Audi or Volvo, etc, then you should get luxury. The Kia is not wannabee luxury nor posing as such, and the dealerships certainly can't provide that luxury sales or service experience.

Kia just can't produce fast enough to meet demand at the current price.

Glad you found one and that you are happy!

Salesmen will tell you anything... they'll agree on a price to get you in the door - but in this market no one should travel far for a Telluride without a purchase contract in place. There's no reason a dealership can't execute it from a distance... but the problem is that there's no reason for them to do it because demand is so high. Unfortunately, your experience is all too common - and informal agreements (even emails, anything less than an executed sales contract) to purchase can't justify travel in good faith.

Happy travels in your SX-P. We love ours.

WOW. Sorry to hear about your experience. That dealer should be in our "bad dealer/dealers to avoid" list, if they're not there already.

Glad to know you got your SXP and loving it.

Another one for the "dealers to avoid".

You need to name this STEALERSHIP. Question, did you tell them that you will be driving 3 hours to see the car?

Winn Kia of Freemont CA.

I was in touch via text, I have screen shots, during the entire drive out there. I told them when I departed, during the drive, and within minutes of arrival. The salesman told me he had a reserved sign on it so that no one would be confused. He also stated that his family was military, just as I am, and that he "had my back"

When I walked in the truck was washed and ready, I told my wife "There is our truck". When I met the salesman he said sorry but someone else agreed to pay more than I did. Of course I asked him, why not just tell me and not have me drive over 100 miles just to turn around and drive back with nothing? To appease me they promised the "next one in" would be mine, as if I would fall for their lies again.

This has nothing to do with supply and demand, this is pure greed, stacking customers and over-booking just to cause bidding wars. They are following the Popeye’s chicken sandwich model. They could have been decent and just told me not to bother to drive out there.

Is this particular vehicle worth this BS? Is any? So we have one “on order” with another dealer, which gives us well over six months for Kia to work out all of the current defects, maybe they will be producing the 2021 models after the 2020 beta version they are currently pushing out at a snail’s pace. We can also monitor plans for Bronco, Toyota 4 Runner, as well as other vehicle updates then finally decided if the legendary Kia is all that is stacked up to be. If after our seemingly never ending wait – if things are equal on a competitor’s options we will choose them over Kia. I can only imagine the service dept at these places, not to mention the fact they can’t even get windshields in stock.

I can at least walk away, with some semblance of pride knowing I did not hand a dealer 5 – 10K over MSRP. Supply and demand will balance out someday…
