If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hey folks - I finally was able to find the exact trim and ext/int color combo I’m looking for at a dealership near me. Unfortunately, the car’s catalytic converter was stolen at the delivery port before it landed at the dealership. The dealership has replaced the catalytic converter but I am hesitant to buy a new car with an unclean Carfax. Anyone have any thoughts on this? How risky is it? Is the car technically refurbished at this point? Should I expect to get a meaningful discount because of this?

Thanks to the community the input/advice!

So let's unpack this.........
  1. Millions of new vehicles suffer damage of some kind between factory, port and dealer.
  2. Very often the damage (minor dings, broken glass, scuffed bumpers,) is repaired by the port handler before delivery to the dealership, often without an official record of the repair.
  3. The factory and shipping firm's insurance cover the repair
  4. Do you have a CarFax document that lists your specific vehicle as having a cat replaced before it was shipped to the dealer? (would love to see it)
  5. Replacing a cat is not a major issue. (aside from the cost and inconvenience assocated with it) Not something that will EVER dimish the value of a vehicle. It impacts the vehicle's value in the same way as changing a burnt out interior light bulb will. (unless of couse you don't reinstall the CAT - that's a different can of worms)
  6. Discount? Umm... no. Re-installing a Fedreally mandated exhaust component wouldn't necessaarily qualify as "damage". But, you may want to check the laws in your state. It appears the dealer did the right thing by communicating the issue to you. Good article here by Autoblog: Your brand new car might not be completely new after all - Autoblog
Enjoy the ride. Catalytic Converter

I seriously doubt they cut out the catalytic converter with the skill of a surgeon so it's not as simple as replacing with the exact same part. Still can be replaced as stated but it wouldn't hurt to see if there is other collateral damage.

Like mentioned above a lot of repairs get done at dealerships before the sale that doesn't hit carfax. If it's running normal without any codes I wouldn't worry about it.
Discount? The way these things are going, I would doubt that.

Good on the dealer to disclose this to you.

The dealership is an hour long flight away so no way for me to easily confirm there hasn’t been any collateral damage. Any ideas?

Thank you and everyone else for the input!

They are in there with angle grinders and Sawzalls. Most likely cut off the supports if any. Who knows, could be just the cat itself since there after the platinum.
