In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hello all, first post on this amazing site. I love perusing all the information.
My wife and I are close to ordering a Telluride with a local dealership at MSRP. When the Telluride arrives we will be trading in a vehicle for it. I feel like we’re going to get kinda low balled on the trade in offer because the dealership knows we have special ordered exactly what we want and are probably not going to walk away. Any way around this, besides selling to a private party? I haven’t found a dealership that will give me a solid offer on the trade in until the vehicle arrives, which is understandable.

You’ll always get more on a private sale than trade in. They wait to appraise your trade until your new vehicle comes in as a way to have the upper hand. Personally I would try and sell your trade prior to going to the dealer. Just my .02

Many people have had luck with Carvana, Vroom or Carmax. If you use the search function at the top right of this site for 'Carvana' you should find a more than a few threads with experiences of selling this way.

Try getting several quotes from online buyers like zoom, carvana, and givemethevin.com to quote you a price to purchase for your car. Choose the highest online bid and take that to the dealer for them to beat. If the dealers can't offer a better price, you'll have a backup online buyer ready to go. I've sold to both carvana and givemethevin and it's pretty easy. You send pics and some info and they quote you a price good for a couple of days. If you agree, someone comes for a test drive and hands you a check. Pretty painless process.

Actually, not really for upper hand. It could take several months for new unit to come in and some people could put quite a few more miles on or could pick up a dent or two. Also, Please keep in mind you pay tax off the difference from trade value, so you may sell your car for 1500 - $2000 more but not come out ahead because of what you will pay in taxes from a 40K plus vehicle and the hassle of selling your car...just my 2 cents

In the same boat. Ordering my Telluride today, but no way of knowing the trade-in short of using the online tool and then facing a low ball on that? Hoping for the best, but anticipating something less. As noted a private sale may result in a better return, but much more legwork (quite literally if the timing is off).

Timing is in the dealership favor as well; forgot about that and the additional legwork that people may not have the time or want to deal with. Good points @rfdacm02

I bought my Telly off the lot, but I did get a good number for my trade-in. I went in with a figure in mind that gave me a decent price and gave the dealership a decent profit. I felt that was fair for the convenience and saved time. Where I live, the amount of the trade-in is also deducted from the cost of the new car, before tax. That makes it easier for both the seller and the dealership to get a decent deal. So I got $13,500 off the price of my Telly, plus $1,755 in tax savings I didn't have to pay. Not sure if that's a consideration where you live.

I guess I never even considered the tax savings. I live in MN, I’ll have to look into that. I’d really prefer not to sell it on my own, just don’t like dealing with people. Thanks for the suggestions on caravana etc.

Interesting point about the sales tax. Always nice to feel good about the deal though, and being thrown a number lower than you'd expect can only set.

As I just figured out, depending on trade value, the difference may or may not be much. If you ballpark the trade value and multiply that by your states sales tax you can kind of figure out where a private sale would be better than the trade in. The less the trade in value, the more a private sale probably benefits you. Just using KBB there's a $3k difference between private and trade in value, far more than the $550 I'd save in sales tax by trading in using the KBB values. Still, dealing with a private sale is a PIA compared to swapping keys and leaving in the new Telly!

I went to several sites including carvana, kbb and edmunds to get not only the value of my trade but buy bids from local associated dealers. The dealers gave ballpark figures dependent upon seeing the car. (naturally). I then used tnose figures to list it on Craigslist. I got lucky. I sold it within a week for my asking price. I knew all about the sales tax issue. I still saved $2500-$3000 over trade in by selling my self. Granted I sold it so quick I was without the car for the month before our Telluride came in. Fortunately we had another car to use.

Pretty much looks like what my "new" plan is. Will wait until Im closer to delivery then list for a private sale.
