In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hey all - thought I would share my success story here in hopes that others may be successful using the method I used.

I put a deposit down for a Wolf Gray SX w/ Prestige, Nightfall, and Towing packages on July 30th and picked it up from the dealership for MSRP (sticker price) on August 21st!

It took me about 3 days of searching and calling ~20 dealerships. All I did was closely monitor the exact spec I was looking for on failcat.com. As soon as a new VIN appeared with my desired spec, I immediately called the dealership. In almost every case the car was either already assigned to a buyer, or the dealership was marking it up (anywhere from $2k-$15k). On the 3rd morning of calling, I found one about 4 hours away from me that was willing to sell for MSRP! Three weeks later and she's sitting in my garage.

It was slightly time consuming, but I was able to get exactly what I wanted without having to wait 6-8 months for a custom build. If I can do it, so can you!

Congrats! Now post those pictures 🥳

I graciously bestow my previous all time record to you. I ordered mine June 14 and picked it up at the dealership July 14th. Congrats!
No, wait... Yours was not a custom order. You sniped failcat to find the build that matched what you wanted. Does not count. Record still mine. Cheers!

How did you relay to the dealer that you knew they had one matching your specs coming? Seems like most don’t even know what they are getting and when

So, I had mixed results with this. It seems like for the most part the VINs showed up in the dealer system at around the same time as they showed up in Failcat. I did have a few dealerships tell me they didn't see it in their system, but the majority were able to identify it based on either the VIN or just giving them the specs. A couple dealers said they didn't see it and then called back an hour or two later to say it just showed up in their system.

Clabowman. I may be missing something here. Forgive me for being dense.

So, you called the destination dealership and told them what you were wanting? Using the VIN? Or, did you just request the vehicle (and options) based on the specs you saw listed in Failcat (that you knew was headed their way)?

Did the dealership ask you about your source? Failcat? Or, did they assume you got lucky that the model you wanted was coming, unassigned.

Right, I just said I saw that they had a Telluride with the specs I was looking for coming in. Nobody ever questioned what my source was or how I knew the vehicle was incoming.

Your persistence paid off. I tried this method for several weeks, thinking that I'd find what I wanted and jump on the dealer before it had left the factory. The number of times I heard that the car was available but at an $8K - $10K premium got old quickly. It was the most frustrating, annoying, and unproductive phase of my buying process. So congrats to you for proving that it can be done.
