Prestige Package - really need it?

So your decision sounds like it was based, in large part, to your dealer experience. Out of curiousity, what did the ‘19 Lexus set you back?

I too was not at all happy with the dealer experience. Does the Lexus feel like you spent your extra 10k well? Certainly, you’ll do well on resale.

Yes, absolutely. Very impressed with build quality of this 4th generation RX. Typical Lexus in terms of comfort, quiet interior, and just the way it drives. I sleep easier knowing that it’s a Toyota and not a BMW, and yeah, resale value is strong.

I think you may be showing your age 🙂, Germany's currency has been the Euro since 2002. I do know from personal what you mean about BMW and Mercedes charging for every little thing. I was thankful when we bought our SL550, there were very few options available.

Yes, I am aware of the Euro ... was just interjecting a little monetary humor. And agree, my previous BMWs option packages were crazy and increased their price sky high. That is why I went with the Kia instead of something Germanic and now have extra samoleons in my pocket. Enough to buy a Stinger if I was so inclined.

I am frustrated not being able to find SX with Prestige package and Grey interior. ALso do not want to wait for 3 months.

Wondering if I am crazy to just skip the Prestige package (see below) and get SX without it?

What I would be missing:

Premium Nappa Leather Seat Trim
Premium Headliner
Head-Up Display (HUD)
Heated 2nd-Row Seats
Ventilated 2nd-Row Seats
Automatic Rain Sensing Windshield Wipers
That’s only 1/2 of options you loose. You will get the $2000 back on resale. Don’t make the mistake of not waiting and getting what you want. You will regret it for as long as you own the vehicle. Really what’s another 4 to 6 weeks!

Other than the power inverter... that looks like the list. What do you mean 'half' of the options?

We decided against the Prestige package and I think it was the right decision for us. Part of that had to do with me finding one on a lot that didn't have it (and not wanting to wait), but we don't miss any of the features Prestige would have added.

We live in the South, where AWD won't really be useful. Like others have said, you get heated/cooled front seats without Prestige, so paying such a premium to add it to the second row (where for us kids will most often be sitting) didn't really add value. Nappa leather seems nice in theory (I've never felt it), but the real leather without Prestige feels just fine (to be honest, the "leatherette" on the S we test drove was soft too). HUD and auto-rain sensing wipers are nifty as well but seem more like a novelty and not worth thousands extra.

Overall, we didn't feel like the constellation of features would really change our day-to-day enjoyment of the vehicle, and certainly not for an extra $4k. Sure, some of that value comes back when you go to sell it, but we intend to drive it into the ground (or at least to the point it won't add a fraction of that value back). I also personally discount features we won't really use because I feel like it's easy to justify spending more than you originally intended by saying "look it has this other thing!" that you never get true value out of.

Correct. 2k. Not 4K

When I was first looking everywhere was quoting $2k for the Prestige package, but it seemed that Kia was only adding Prestige to the AWD models based on the stock I could find. As of two weeks ago, Kia updated their website to list Prestige as including AWD and costing $4k (though obviously if you were buying AWD anyways it's only a net $2k increase).

Whats the other half??

Many KIA and Hyundai dealers I’ve frequented over the span of first my V8 Genesis and 3 subsequent US made Sorentos (‘11, ‘13 and ‘17) have been “spotty”.
Not especially referring to dealer management or Service but the salesman level of customer/client communication. After all they’re still defined as “car salesman”.
But there are in every market I’ve seen definitely exceptions. They’re just that though. “Exceptions”. Kinda why Amazon is the Goliath of retail. AKA great service and no potential lousy “sales” personnel.
Nope. I’ve no solutions. Sorry to add.

Good value! And so you actually like the forward look/design of the Toyota. Hmmm. Good on you.

Anyone have experience with a car seat mounted to the nappa seats compared to the standard leather? I’ve heard differing opinions as to the durability of nappa leather. My captains chairs will have car seats mounted to them for a few years so ubviously the heating/cooling option doesn’t really matter, but if one type of leather is better than the other for durability, then I would be interested in that. Thanks

I have never once regretted waiting to get the most elaborate option packages available on any car/rig. Never. And this includes our 2020 Telluride SXP.

Use a seat cover or a towel underneath

The Napa leather and underlying foam layers create a softer surface. In my experience, the softer leather surfaces usually resist wear and depression spots better than others.

Definitely will use a cover, we have them on our grand Cherokee with leather seats and even with a good quality cover the car seats will leave a decent impressions.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve heard that nappa is softer too, which helps it recover from depressions. I guess my main concern here is the other posts saying that there doesn’t seem to be much a difference between the nappa and standard leather on the Telluride. Just wondering if the upgrade is worth it since we have one on order and that’s been our biggest decision for options. I would definitely spend the extra money to have the leather last longer if we went prestige since we plan on keeping this car for a long time and the first 5 years of its life will have car seats mounted to it.

The standard leather is very high quality and it looks nice. That shouldn't be your main decision point - if the other features of the Prestige package (namely HUD, headliner, inverter, heated/ventilated second row) have value to you, then get the Prestige. In your case, with car seats, that ventilated second row may not be a big deal, so is the HUD and marginally nicer leather worth the price difference? If you ordered FWD, it's a $4000 difference (because P requires AWD) If you ordered an SX AWD, it's a $2000 difference. Also a longer wait for P, and you might be able to find a non P SX well before your order.

Good point. We did go with the AWD, but the other options with the prestige package just don’t make the upgrade worthwhile. On a side note, our dealership doesn’t markup the price like many are doing right now, but they do have dealer “add-ons”, one being a leather sealer that adds an additional 7 year warranty to the seats, so I think we’re definitely good skipping the nappa upgrade.
