• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hey, I just bought my 2021 Telluride SX Prestige Dark Moss Nightfall edition with Dune Brown leather seats and Rear Entertainment System. At first, I was a bit put off by the RES. I thought I had made a BIG Mistake. Now, I am in love with the RES. I can connect my Apple TV and Fire-stick into the monitors. I can stream movies, YouTube, Netflix, Disney, Amazon prime, and PLUTO TV to watch regular TV. I use my phone as a hotspot to get connected online. My daughter loves having “TV’s” in the car. I was able to neatly stuck away the cords. Use the house plug in car for power. It’s better than having a clunky DVD in the car any day.

The monitors have limited tablet capabilities. However, the label on the back clearly says they’re RES Monitors.

Post some pictures please! 🤩
Took pictues at night in Garage. I have 7 year old. Seats covered, but cords is neatly tuck into seat. Apple TV will also work like a charm.

Rear entertainment systems are fine up until the child starts actually holding and using the mobile device, either phone or tablet. Once that happens, the passive sitting and watching is basically over. Not a bad thing having an entertainment system, it just has a limited time span. Having 4 kids of my own that have grown up the last child never seemed to care about passive viewing. I'm not fond of the way the world is but I'm sure I'm not alone.

Agree 100%. Streaming also carries a problem of buffering. Trading the problem of scratched DVDs for buffering. But if you use a tablet/device with local storage you can download to the tablet and you have the best of everything. Plus, relatively speaking, the tablets are cheap and can be replaced every couple years for faster processors and more memory. A single 10” Amazon Fire tablet is $150 (sometimes cheaper) and comes with 32GB of memory and the ability to insert expandable memory ($50 for 256GB more). A headrest tablet mount runs under $30. Not to mention the tablet is portable. By comparison a fire stick is $50 but you have to factor in the cost of the RES screens and you get no ability to download content after spending $1,550.

Attached are screenshots of a solution that takes a few minutes to install, one wire and can be made portable.
  • $100 Amazon Fire 10" tablet with 32GB storage on sale
  • $17 rugged case
  • $15 headrest mount
  • $28 expandable memory card to add 256GB of storage
All in for $160. I'm streaming Pluto TV and there's Prime, Netflix, DisneyPlus and HBOMax that all allow for local downloads through their app up to 288GB vs streaming over a FireTV or Fire TV Stick which has ~5GB of local storage for apps and buffering.

If I want to dust off the old DVD headrest player with HDMI input that I paid $110 each in 2019, I can connect a gaming system like Nintendo Switch, Raspberry Pi or I can connect a small OTA digital tuner and get live TV.

I've had my Telluride for over 2 years and I've already replaced the aftermarket equivalent to the Kia RES with a more modern and practical solution. I anticipate in the next couple years I'll end up spending less than $200 and have something even better with 5G+ and even faster/larger tablets/devices. In 2011, I spent roughly $2K in a brand new minivan for an aftermarket overhead DVD with 10" drop down screen integrated with a new Kenwood nav head unit because it was still cheaper than jumping up $10K for a trim level that offered the Toyota branded RES since at the time it wasn't offered in the Sienna SE trim. I was happy and it worked well for a couple years, but after 9 years of owning the van it might as well have been a CRT and VHS player with outdated maps. In my defense, my kids were younger and we had plenty of DVDs, streaming apps didn't exist, broadband was slower, iPads with broadband were still over $800, and Amazon was still just an online retailer in 2011 and had not released their first Fire Tablet. The Apple TV 2nd Gen in 2011 for $99 was the equivalent to the Amazon Fire Stick today with 8GB of storage but Apple did have AirPlay with iPhone 5.

Just noticed this deal for a Hyundai HyTab Android 10, 10.1” tablet with WiFi, 4G broadband, 4GB RAM, and 128GB local storage with expansion slot for $180. I’m guessing Hyundai Motor Group (which includes Kia) gets their technology from Hyundai Technology Group given that the infotainment systems are so similar* (other than the obvious UVO vs Bluelink.) This could be the platform for the nextgen rear entertainment for Kia.

*I'm basing this observation by comparing update.kia.com to update.hyundai.com and seeing that my Display Audio Gen1 system looks the same as the Hyundai version. Then while using the Navigation Updater software for my 2017 Hyundai with Navigation, I noticed that the 10" screen Telluride and Palisade both use the Standard Gen5W system which look operationally identical.

How did you get the volume to work on them? I can’t get the volume to work on our Telluride with RES
