Steering Wheel Controls Up/Down Button

While I completely agree that the switch functions backwards to what other manufacturers are doing, but I understand why Kia is doing this. If you have a playlist open on your screen, pushing down on the switch to go to next track makes sense. It would be good if Hyundai/Kia gave customers options to choose the functionality but I highly doubt it is going to happen. It would be faster to get used to the function. :) As for reversing the switch, the left switch module will have to be taken apart and does not look that simple. Good luck and as always, when working with steering wheel, don't blow the airbag.

Edit: The switch part is #96710-S9030SA1 and around $100 to replace if you mess up.
I just had this experience in my car and had the same idea. I didn't do the nav/infotainment upgrade that people are grumbling about - not sure how that connects to this issue. But I did just add SiriusXM and now have about 20 programmed stations, between FM and Sirius. As I scroll through them, the down and up buttons make a lot of sense.

I guess some folks are really frustrated with this?!

I just think of it as a list....like going down my list to go to the next one.

Hope that helps.

This is what we do as well. It is different from all other vehicles we have had so it takes some getting used to. We would definitely have preferred the other way around but not a major issue.

Yeah I know..... eventually I will get used to it....everyday when I use the toggle switch I keep telling myself "don't sweat the small stuff"....

When I use Apple Carplay to play music from my phone, pushing the up/down button will get me to the next or previous songs. However one thing which I feel awkward is, pushing the button down gets me the next song while pushing it up gets me the previous song. It is extremely unnatural in my opinion. Is there anyway I can program the button so it can do the reverse? Yesterday I had a Kia Forte loaner from a Kia dealer and the Up/Down button did exactly what I wanted. Am I the only oddball in this forum? Anyone feels the same way?

You are far from the only oddball. I started this thread just days before you started this one. Truly an annoyance!

Rather than trying to mount a switch upside down, which probably will not work because it assumes the switch is entirely semetrical including whatever mounting fasteners are used. How about someone find the connector and show which wires need ot be swapped to get the function you want (swapp up and down contact wires in the connector).

Note though that swapping the wires will make the switch work backwards when a song list is displayed or a list of radio stations is displayed.

The true fix is a software change to have the switch function depend on the screen presented. Software would need to define which screens operate next song/station in a switch up direction and which screens operate next song/station to be in a switch down direction.

My Stinger works opposite, switch up is next unless you have a station list or song list displayed then down is next, so it looks like Kia may have responded to complaints from stinger owners (see stinger forum 2 years ago) and now on Telluride the switch down is next for everything, which probably was a less expensive fix than engineering new software with screen dependencies.

I am used to the Stinger, which I usually drive, every time I get in the wife's Telly I use it backwards for the first 3 or 4 times.....Didnt i just hear that song....

I emailed Kia to have a case opened regarding this, as expected they replied with a bunch of fluff....I think I’m already half way from totally getting used to it.....

it's actually not so bad. They did this to match the infotainment system channel list. Imaging moving a computer mouse up to watch the cursor go down. It wouldn't match. IF Kia had reversed the left/right track buttons, then i'd have an issue with it because that would go against decades of behavioral programming to work our car stereos/walkmans, etc: left (back), middle (play/pause) and right (advance/FF).

Maybe it's because I'm coming from an old technology "luxury" 2002 car with AM/FM, a tape deck and a CD changer that Kia's steering wheel control doesn't bother me. I actually like it.

How often do we use the control to page through a playlist? It's used for moving to next track or changing radio station channels. I have a 2021 Sorento and the button is also backwards on it. It is distracting trying to use it as it does the exact opposite of what is trying to be accomplished. I am concerned I am going to have an accident trying to find the radio station I'm looking for. My 2017 Sorento did not have this issue.

I have the same issue! It’s driving me crazy especially since I traded a 2020 Kia telluride (which worked as expected up for the next track and down for the previous one) in for a 2022 model. I was convinced something was wrong with it until I read this feed. It makes me feel a little better knowing that it’s not just me or my vehicle.

It surprises me that your 2020 Telluride was different. I have a 2019 Sorento and a 2020 Telluride. The Sorento is the usual way where up is next. My Telluride is an SX with the Prestige package (not sure it matters) and its down for next track. I agree with the fact that it seems to be based on the software layout where the "next" track in a playlist shows as down, but it was very unusual when i first got the Telluride. I drove a friends 2022 Telluride SX and his was exactly the same as mine.

Presumably @imanomad2u's 2020 was an LX or S with the older style 8" infotainment. That still behaved in what most perceive as the "correct" way. All 2022 models have the newer 10.25" infotainment, just like the 2020 and 2021 EX and SX models... which go down for next.

I took the car to the dealership and they think it’s backwards and are ordering new buttons for the steering wheel. I’m surprised they didn’t research it before they concluded that the buttons go down for the next track or station. Are we sure of that? Also I have a problem with my USB port when I play music using a SanDisk 64 GB cruiser fit. It turns on and turns off periodically and the screen says “reading USB”. Has anyone had this problem?

What a waste of time. Replacing the steering wheel buttons isn’t going to change the system’s logic.

Like I said, all Hyundai/Kia models with the 10.25” and greater infotainment behave this way. This is normal and this is how it is. As we’ve said before, think of it as going down a list and you’ll get used to it.

Regarding the USB port, yours is probably broken, or quite touchy at the very least. Make sure nothing is bumping the USB stick when it’s plugged in.

Nothing is bumping the USB because I’m using a 64gb SanDisk Cruzer Fit and it is like 1” in size. I took it to the dealership and Murphy’s law they couldn’t duplicate the problem therefore couldn’t fix it. It was around 50 degrees Fahrenheit that day, but the next day when it was 30 degrees it kept shutting on and off. Got so bad switched to XM radio, then for some reason it switched by itself back to the USB! This is a mess….

Poor contact of the pins on the thumb drive? Lint or other buildup? Could try alcohol on a cotton swab.

Could be corrupt data files causing the media player to reset?

I would also try and second thumb drive to see if the problem is isolated to the first thumb drive.

Tried to clean it like you said. No change. Not waiting for delivery of new usb.

My 2022 Kia k5 does this
