This afternoon I went to pick up my brand new '21 Telluride EX AWD. This was a pre-order that I had waited two months for - I know, not a whole lot of time compared to others and I'm lucky for that. Anyways while at the dealer for the pick up, the salesman started to go over the features of the car, we logged onto the uvo app from our phones and he was prepared to show us how that worked. We asked how the remote start works and he attempted to demonstrate it for us, however the car wouldn't start! He then looked under the hood, then tried starting it from the push start / inside the vehicle and was able to start it up about two times until it wouldn't turn on again no matter how many attempts. When it would fail to start, which was the majority of tries, we would hear several loud clicks coming from the engine compartment. Service dept was closed. So off we went back home but without our new vehicle. I'm very disappointed and put a very large amount of cash down. They are going to bring it to service on Monday to see what's wrong. Obviously if there is a major issue with the vehicle and we cannot get it or it will take an extended amount of time to fix, then I will get my money back but it's concerning that there is already an issue with it right off the bat. You'd think they would have tested it when it arrived at the dealership for pre-delivery inspection to make sure it would at least turn on!

So that's my story. I'm wondering has anyone experience anything like this? Do you think it's a faulty battery or something else? Any advice would be appreciated. This is my first Kia so I have no history with this manufacturer but so far we're not off to a good start. I just hope it will be a simple fix that will not take long and that I won't have any future issues with the car.

Yup, sounds like your dealer missed/skipped the battery test portion of the PDI. Did you try to pick up the car right off the truck?

Thanks for the input that makes me feel a bit better. We’re not sure if it had come right off the truck when we got to it, but I don’t think so because the salesman told us just a couple days prior that the vehicle had arrived and was in PDI.

My telluride battery lasted only 1 - 2 months.

Replaced and has been fine since. The failure rate of automotive batteries is actually quite high - probably best it happened this way.

these clicks and symptoms are a dead battery. Ask the dealer to replace it, and generally minus the dealer, since the battery must be tested before delivery.

Not sure what minus the dealer means?
In fairness to the dealer, they could have charged it and all was good during PDI. In the case of my battery, good one or two months to suddenly not holding a charge strong enough to start the car in less than a few hours after coming off a battery charger. It was a “hard” failure, not gradual.

AGM batteries are supposed to be maintenance free. But clearly some initial maintenance is required. I’m worried what the cost will be to replace these some day. I think all the tech in the car comes at a cost. Does anyone know if you have a dead AGM battery can you jumpstart and drive or are you stuck on the side of the road? I think letting an AGM discharge too much is even worse than other batteries and they require a special charger.

Here’s another ignorant battery question, I typically spray battery terminal protector on the connections and have been on both my cars with AGM batteries to prevent corrosion. But since the corrosion comes from acid, do AGM batteries need this?

Id say it’s the battery too. most dealerships have the service department close before the sales department which can be a pain(exactly like in your case). It would have been nice if they would have got someone in from service to change your battery quick and see if that was the issue or even the salesman could have swapped the battery for you. Sucks as you were probably so excited to get the call to pick up your new telluride and had it within eye site only to have to leave it there and wait more days as most likely closed on sunday. Hopefully Monday morning shortly after they open you get the call as it’s resolved!!

I think since the incredible high demand for these vehicles, dealers are getting them in, perhaps running them through a car wash and throwing the keys to the buyers. If it is simply a dead battery, there is absolutely no excuse for this dealer. The car should of been checked with the service department prior to delivery to the buyers. To have a new car buyer show up and leave without a car? Unimaginable. 🙄

I have a May 2020 EX that sits for weeks during winter (in a heated garage). I use a Battery Tender slow charger every couple of weeks. Do the same on our 2014 Murano. In the warmer months I charge 'em every month.
Invariably, the Murano is fully charged in 4-6 hours where the Telly needs an overnight boost. So obviously, even while sitting, it's pulling from the battery. Telly is a strange little beastie...

Did you have to buy a special Battery Tender made for AGM batteries?

These batteries nowadays start one time and fail the next. Have had it happen a few times. The only exception was my Chevy Cruze; it gave me one “difficult” start cycle. I checked the battery and the battery had power but under a load it dropped too far down.

Nope. Just a standard Battery Tender brand. Faster charge to 80% and then measured, much slower charge to 100%.

From HotRod Magazine:
"You can now find chargers that are specifically marketed for AGM batteries. They're nice but by no means necessary. However, some recent chargers have a switch position on their control panels marked AGM/gel. Since AGM and gel batteries have rather different charging requirements, that position is somewhat bogus, according to several AGM battery manufacturers. They recommend selecting the conventional switch positions with these chargers.
Of course, you can avoid all these headaches with deep discharge and parasitic loads in the first place simply by using a float charger. Also known as battery tenders, these units deliver a small (500 to 800 milliamperes) but constant charge to the battery, keeping it fresh and fully charged."

this means that the dealer is bad (unprofessional). He may have charged the battery, but that’s no use if the battery is dead. the dealer did not carry out the test with special equipment, which is mandatory before the car is delivered to the customer.

They just need to swap the dead battery for a brand new one and you're probably good to go :)

@2020Telly:

As you already know, my Telly is pretty much stock and OEM everything.

I haven't sprayed any protector on the terminals nor have I even messed with the battery at all.

It passed final inspection at KMMG West Point (I have the final inspection receipt) and nothing rattled loose during transport.

I picked up the car the day after delivery. The truck arrived at Hilltop like 20 minutes after I left there (from ordering OEM parts) and I ended up going back first thing the next morning to finish all the paperwork, pay, and take delivery.

Never had an issue.

Took it up to the freezing cold mountains of NorCal/Nevada during a blizzard and it started every time.

That being said, this Telly is my daily driver so it hasn't sat in a garage for more than a day.

I do notice that it keeps charging my phone after I've shut off the engine.

Thankfully, I unplug the phone immediately after shutting off the car because this battery does drain.

The proximity sensors on the SX swing the side view mirrors out/in when I get close to the car and must use some amount of energy.

Power liftgate and ambient lighting probably draws a little power too. 🤔

Sometimes you just get a defective battery; I’ve had that happen buying from off the shelf at the auto parts store. It just happens. Easy fix for the dealer just swap out the battery

They need to deliver it to your home washed and filled with fuel. Embarrassing and inexcusable on their part indeed if it's "just" a battery. I'd expect this from a used car lot all day, not for the delivery of an award winning high profile vehicle to which you waited months for. Its lame. GL

Take it easy hot rod. They fumbled this delivery for sure. Their only part in this is to replace the battery and make sure everything electrical works.
