Towing capacity

Just purchased a hitch mounted cargo carrier basket. Based on this discussion I decided to get some lights that connect to the 4 pin for added visibility. They aren’t DOT approved but I figure they can’t hurt and are better than nothing added.

I also don’t plan to splice in the white lights into reverse on that $15 strip but I was going to run the wire into the cargo area and put either a USB end or 12v accessory so I have the option to plug it in if needed. The switch will be my 10 year old in the third row 🙂.

I wasn’t able to get the reverse working yet. But this is how the rest of it fits on the Telluride. The hatch opens clearing the cargo basket. The lights were intended for a truck tailgate so I had to make a ~16” jumper to reach the 4pin connector. I might get some plastic tubing to protect the wires from weather under the basket. The anti-rattle hitch stabilizer came with the cargo basket which I thought was helpful.

@NCTelly - nice job with the lights on the hitch basket - well spent $15.

I would definitely get something to protect the wires from weather and abrasion - and it'll help the wires blend in.

IMHO this makes it much safer, especially at night when the low slung basket might not be seen by some. Especially the bumper mounted turn signals when the basket is loaded.

Hey, I am looking at the same setup or something very similar. How is it holding up for you? Did you encounter any problems with the cargo getting hot/smelling from the exhaust?

Not at all. It was far enough away. I was a little disappointed with the sag but the straps helped.

Thanks for replying! What straps do you mean? If I were to put my cooler on the side of the exhaust, or I use one of those cargo bags, would that be fine?

The mockins cargo basket came with straps. I wasn’t worried about exhaust at all.
