What discounts is everyone seeing so far?

Wow, can get much differing opinion than the two right above...lol

To each there own lol. Everyone has different tastes and things they like and are looking for, nothing wrong with that. Luckily we have a great assortment of larger suvs. When we test drove the Ascent it was more of a due diligence thing, we never expected to like it but the ride and drive was awesome, and again, I didn't want to buy another CVT again but Subarus are really the best, immediate power compared to some others, and zero turbo lag.

So we have test driven the 2019 Mazda CX9, 2019 Subaru Ascent, 19 Honda Passport, 19 CRV, 2019 Honda Passport, 2019 VW Atlas, 19 hyundai santa fe and a Telluride EX AWD.

I think we are down to the Passport and Telluride and Ascent. For as sport as the Mazda was supposed to be It was kinda lackluster to me, didn't feel like it has the power the others had and the CRV engine and pedals felt weak and cheap.

I test drove the Ascent and honestly the ride shocked the hell out of me. Its cushiony and rides like a luxury vehicle compared to the Telluride and others. It has plenty of power so 4 vs a 6 cylinder isnt a issue at all and Subaru makes good CVT's with artificial gear shifts unlike Nissans Shitty CVT's. lol. If it wasn't for me wanting to try a different brand (wife has a 2016 Subaru Legacy) we would have bought the ascent, its that good.
Maybe, but it is ugly in my opinion and looks like every other SUV on the road. Looks like a Sorrento.

B-wayne,
Just got my CU (CR) annual April Auto issue where they proclaimed the Ascent the best 3 row crossover.
Their review described the ride and performance just as you experienced.
Will have to add it back to my short list.

Keep those cards and letters coming!

Looks are very subjective. And I agree its rather bland, in other words it looks like a subaru suv lol. Totally agree there, which is why when we test drove it I was shocked in the ride quality and how quiet and peppy it was. I still think I'm considering the Telluride and Passport a little more but if you are considering the telluride do your self a favor and test drive the ascent like we did. You might love it.

I'll pay the extra grand for a 6 cylinder, no CVT, Nappa Leather and the extra warranty gladly.

I understand your point. As noted, in our area, KIA does not have the reputation for being of the same quality and dependability as the other brands. In addition, I understand our dealership is difficult to work with.

The Ascent and Telluride have similar HP and Torque numbers, however the torque comes in at 2000 RPM on the Subaru. The Ascent also gets better mileage (EPA Ratings - waiting to see some real world for all of the newer vehicles). The Subaru also has top IIHS Safety rating...hopefully the Telluride will as well, I do see that several KIAs and Hyundais have top safety plus, if the Telluride can as well, that will be a big factor for a lot of buyers in this segment. Not sure if this is anything the early adopters are considering since the Telluride has not been crash tested (this can be said for early adopters for any vehicle) This is most likely due to the turbo. I too would prefer a NA V6 (or larger) to a turbo engine as it should be easier to service and I believe more dependable long term, depending on your use. For me I have a fair amount of hwy driving, so my engine and systems get up to and maintain temp for periods of time to burn off residuals that can cause issues in turbos and exhaust. The Nappa leather is nice, but I doubt it will help with resale, most used buyers will see leather as leather. Also the warranty is only as good as those that back it and the dealership that supports it.

Speaking of, does KIA require that all maintenance be performed at the dealership to retain the longer warranty?

From what I have been reading no but you do need to follow the maintenance plan very closely and document it well otherwise they might not cover items down the road. Which in turn, if your having a bad or uncomfortable dealer experience with Kia already might make the warranty experience the same, you never know. I my self have never owned a kia so I have no experience with warranty. So I've been trying to research it to see if its easy to use or if its not really a "real" advantage over a Honda or Toyota or Subaru where they are reliable and have good service departments.

Thanks for the reply. I don't own a KIA either. I will be in the market within 2 years, so I am watching closely, because I do need a vehicle in this segment. Ideally I would like to find a CPO that is about 1-2 years old so that I don't take the hit on a new vehicle, but I have seldom bought used because I cannot find what I want, and if I am paying $40K plus, I want what I want.

I agree, is the warranty a "real" advantage or not. If it is easy to use and the dealership does not fight things then its a good deal. If they nit pick, then I don't have the patience or time to deal with that. For me, most of my maintenance is actually early. My current car list synthetic oil changes 6000-7500 and I always change at 5000. During warranty period, I do have a shop perform it, but it is my local certified guy, not a dealership - that way I have more than a purchase receipt from an auto parts store for proof of service.

So I’ve been reaching out to different dealerships and the one closer to me has the best customer service ratings. They have been the most communicative. I finally got that magic question “if I can get them to come down on price what would you be comfortable with paying”. Now I have a 2 numbers, one I would be willing to pay now, one I would expect later when it’s not so “new”. Do I go for the gold and tell them the deeper discount? And I see that you shouldn’t talk trade ins until you lock in a good price on the car but in this case would they be able to maybe give me more for my trade in to get me to my number since they seem to be under some type of directive to stick to the minimal rebates at the moment? Any advise is appreciated.

just curious what prices have they given you? lol im just seeing the $1,000 rebate and $1,500 financing rebate. No discounts on the ex or S trims

Same experience. $38.5k for an EX FWD an S for $35.5K and an SX for $42k but that vehicle was technically already sold. Then the financing rebate and loyalty rebates. USAA (True Car) car buying also has a minimal amount of vehicles with maybe a few hundred off but not at that location. I told her I’m not comfortable paying anything close to MSRP and that’s too close for me.

After looking at the ascent more, looks like to HUD, 8 inch screen is tops, No 360 camera, no smart cruise? You can correct me if I'm wrong. I know some dealers call some things different stuff. No blind spot cameras, no HDA or LKA? No keeping people from opening the doors into oncoming traffic.. seems like an apples to oranges comparison.

Between my wife and I(6 Kias now and one Hyundai) and our kids (4 Kias) we have never had anything not fixed under warranty. As with any brand dealers vary and your response may not be the same. Our dealer is absolutely wonderful and is better than any dealer around here that I've dealt with. I've never dealt with luxury dealers though. My sone has a Forte (2013) he took to Florida last year (had 67K on the clock). On his way back, the engine gave out in Georgia. The Kia dealer in Georgia gave him a loaner to get back here to Ohio. The engine bearing had seized and ruined the motor. Kia replaced the engine and then had his car shipped from Georgia to our dealer when it was done. He returned the loaner(free) to our dealer and they shipped that back to the dealer in Ga.

My yellow Stinger had the much vaunted yellow paint chipping problem. They bought it back from me. Gave me all the payment I had made, covered the spoiler and PPF I had put on there and my trade equity. They took it back plus gave me a check for 10K. I bought another for even cheaper this time than what I bought my first one since the 19's had come out and they were dealing on the 18's.

Kia has done me right and they have fantastic vehicles now and have been at the top of JD powers initial reliability for 4 years now. You could say I'm a fan...lol

You can look at deals a couple of different ways, but remember it all comes down to the bottom dollar trade difference. This is all part of the "game". I have been on both sides of the desk, granted it was 20+ years ago when I sold cars...wow, I am getting old. I also usually end up buying 1-2 cars per year - between work and personal. Mostly it determines if you are a type that cares about what you see for a trade in value. If you do, then work in the trade right away, as you will see most of the money put in your trade to make you feel good and in turn less discount on the car. If you negotiate a price straight up and then try to add a trade in after the fact, you most likely will not see as much "value" for your trade on paper.

Often if people like to see a good value for their trade, the paperwork will actually show a higher value than what the dealership may actually list the car for, they "show" the true trade plus discounts in the trade value.

What I do is determine what is the fair price I am willing to pay for the vehicle by itself. I then research what my trade should be worth, I do this through NADA, KBB and through web searches. If I find listings in my area that are similar, I will figure that I will get around $2K less on my trade than the listing price. I feel this is fair. It gives the dealership some room on my trade to run it through detail/inspection, time for photos to be taken and posted and a little room to negotiate while still making a profit on my trade when they sell it. I believe in a fair deal, I don't want to be taken advantage of nor do I want to bend them over a barrel, as I will need them for service at some point. WIN WIN all around.

To get more out of my trade, I will do a fairly in depth detail before I take it in. I have been able to get an additional $200-250 added to my trade when I convince them they don't need to spend much cost in detailing it for sale. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't, but you will always get more if you car is clean so they KNOW what they are purchasing from you.

By doing this, I can then take the fair price I am willing to pay and deduct my trade value. This difference is what I am willing to pay (if I trade) and I don't care how they put the numbers on paper.

On a side note, check with your state on sales tax. In some cases people think they come out better if they sell their trade outright and that can be true. In MN where I am from, the +/- 7% sales tax is only applied to the trade difference. So, if I get a $20K trade/discount, it saves me $1400 in sales tax. I very well may not get much more than that if I sell it outright and I have to deal with trying to sell it.

There are a lot of factors to consider, but at the end of the day, the dealership knows what it wants to get out of its car and knows what it wants to buy yours for. So at the end of the day it comes down to the trade difference no matter how the numbers are on paper.

The ascent has all of the same safety systems the Telluride has. blind slot warning, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, emergency breaking, lane departure warrning and where it moves you back in the lane etc. My 2016 Subaru Legacy was one of the first cars to have all of the new fancy safety systems. they are all called different things but are almost the same. 8 inch screen is pretty standard and quite large on most cars and suvs. The Telluride as far as I know is one of the larger sizes. The Keeping people from opening doors when cars are approaching is something new that just came out on hyundais just late last year and now moving to kias line up.

I wasn' t seeing anything close

Thanks for the clarification. Wish they would standardize all these features to a certain name for easier comparison. Still don't see anything close to HUD unless I'm missing that too..lol, but for the features and warranty and powerplant and looks. I'm with the KIA, how do they compare in size. I had the 2012 Sorento with the 3rd row and the 3rd row was completely useless in it except for little kids. I sat in the back of the Telluride with the drivers seat and 2nd row almost all the way back and still had plenty of legroom (6 ft tall).

Is there a 1500 financing rebate that isnt good on the financing promotions like 1.9% at 60 months? Or 0.9 at 48 months?

You get one or the other
meh that stinks, almost makes it a wash when your stuck financing at 4.9% if you do the 1500 rebate. The Telluride promotions are really disappointing. Really hope the founders club is real
