• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... What other SUVs are you cross shopping vs. Telluride ?

Explorer, Palisade and Durango. I started with the Durango because of the V8 and good deals could be had on ‘19’s. One day we’re driving and wife sees the Telluride and says it’s nice. We stopped into a dealership and it was love at first site for her and I dug it. For a while it looked grim trying to get one for MSRP so we test drove the Palisade and Explorer as options. Kept coming back to Telluride so we just ordered one. Won’t have it for a few months so nothing’s written in stone. I’d really like an Explorer ST or Platinum but they’re $10-12k more than the Telluride and Palisade. Wish the Kia had a lil more HP.

I am also looking at:
  • Hyundai Palisade
  • 2019 Acura RDX
  • 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited X
  • BMW X5 (Used)
Identical list, but replace the X5 with Q7 (open to used or new) and add XC90.

I’m looking at Honda Passport and VW Atlas. VW has the longest Warranty and Honda the shortest. I think the Passports AWD system and ground clearance would make it better in deep snow. I know they say Telluride has torque vectoring but I have not seen enough test to decide if it is as good as Honda’s system.
The transmission in the Honda Pilot and Passport are junk (bad design that results in lagging when you need to change gears). I suggest you do a thorough test drive and research this.

I know this since I was pumped for the Passport - do not need 3 rows. I drove it, gave it some gas and waited like 1 to 2 seconds for a gear change. Went online when I was home and see Honda picked a dud for a transmission. Car was immediately eliminated from consideration.

Ford Exploder (hated it)
GMC Acadia (liked it, good value but pretty small interior.... can't be much larger than the Terrain)
VW Atlas SEL R Line (Loved it.... especially the space... it's massive)
Ordered a Telluride SX (non prestige), mainly because you get more safety/comfort features than the Atlas SEL R Line for the same money.

Yes, the Explorer has gotten some really bad press even with the new design. Don't like GMC. Atlas seemed nice though. Looked at Palisade and they only had base models, all $5K over MSRP. Didn't like the front or the interior. And another Hyundai dealer, Terry Reid Hyundai, CARTERSVILLE, GA blew me off and told me there was nothing to look at when there was a demo that was out for a test drive (I saw it leave as I was coming in). Totally basically walked me out the door. Jim Ellis KIA, Kennesaw GA (where I bought my last two Kias and where I have my service done) sat me down with their "internet rep." They had a Snow White Pearl on the lot that they would not let me look at because it was SOLD. At 45K oder sticker. This wet behind the ears "internet rep" told me that no one could order a Telluride. No dealers were taking orders. Then he tells me don't believe what you read on the forums! I marched out and told them I would be taking all of my future (sales & service) business elsewhere and that I will tell my neighbors, friends, co-workers and relatives to avoid Jim Ellis KIA. Period.

I was so close to purchasing a 2020 Volvo XC90 Inscription the other day. What got me really interested was they had a 2019 Inscription with 1,600 miles (CPO) on the lot for $54K. However, by the time I got there the next day it was sold. Through no haggling or anything the dealer offered up a 2020 XC90 Inscription for $58K. If the Volvo had more interior room for the 3rd row passengers I would have probably purchased it, but this 3rd row issue was very important to my wife as it will be her car.

Jim Ellis KIA in Kennesaw was an awful experience for me too back in April when I first started searching. This was before they became really hard to find on dealer lots. They lied about the two SX's they had on the lot just to get me to drive there. Said they both had factory tow packages, but neither had a tow hitch of any kind. And was told they were both black, one was actually black copper which I didn't care for TBH. But the kicker was the $5K "safety package" they had added on to both vehicles. I said I didn't want or need lifetime key fob replacement or whatever else that package included and the salesman's response was, "I wouldn't sell it to you if you didn't need it." I walked out the door immediately and told him they'd never get my business. He seemed surprised by my reaction, but I'm not sure why. I got a previously spoken for SX that a buyer backed out on a couple weeks before it was scheduled to arrive at Ed Voyles KIA Chamblee with no markup. It arrived on May 7.

I'm curious if Jim Ellis KIA continued with this sales strategy or maybe have gotten even worse with their markups and add ons after the demand got so high?

I like the fully loaded Atlas SEL Premium with the blacked out wheel option. The way the Atlas drives/handles is awesome. The Atlas sells for about $5k below MSRP which is less than the SX with Prestige. The crash test results for the Atlas are great; the pano roof is better; and the digital cluster is better. I'm concerned about the reliability of the Atlas but my local VW dealer is great. The Kia dealers are horrible!

I like the styling of the Telluride better and the self steering seems cool but I can live without it.

I ordered the Telluride SX Prestige but am still thinking about the VW Atlas.
I have heard that the atlas has engine issue and not reliable .

We looked at/researched:
Kia Sorento - Telluride beat it at every level for the price
Subaru Ascent - snazzy, but we felt was overpriced
Nissan Murano - small, cramped, and way overpriced
Toyota Highlander - dated and uncomfortable
Ford Explorer - crappy warranty, expensive and keeps getting more so if you want any options
Hyundai Santa Fe - a more expensive Sorento

We kept circling back to the Telluride at every turn.
Our family will never purchase another GM or Daimler/Chrysler/Dodge product. And we were also steered away from GM (Acadia, traverse, equinox, etc) by multiple mechanics.
Volvo CX90 was on the list, but expensive to maintain (and purchase).
Neighbors have an Atlas, and love it, but they keep eyeing my Telluride after concerns with engine issues on the Atlas.

What you heard is likely not true. I own an Atlas and I’m a member of probably the most popular VW forum. I have never seen people having problems with the engine. My 2018 Atlas SEL is reliable.

According to Consumer Report, on average 2018 Atlas has 1/5 star for reliability. While you are correct that engine troubles are not as widespread - having 10 active recalls for that year as well as Far Below average reliability does not agree with your statement. It could be that your vehicle was built better or it might be that all surprises will come shortly :)

We use to be a VW dealer. When Atlas Launched we had a ton of issues. The Telluride Launch has gone 90% better in my personal opinion.

Just go to the atlas complaints page on FB to see all the engine problems... be prepared to spend a good portion of the day there.

Crossed shopped the Ascent... Ugly as hell, might as well drive a minivan
