Back passenger window spontaneously explodes.

Driving down the freeway at 60 mph in our brand new Telluride when the back passenger window exploded completely with a bang. Very little glass was left attached to the seal. Shocked the heck out of us, but we decided to drive to the nearest Kia dealer who argued that no, it was not a manufacturer's defect. (!) With less than 300 miles on the odometer, we begged to differ and persisted until the Service manager reluctantly gave us a claim form. Ever baby MBA knows that when new customer acquisition costs you zero effort, you are absolutely misguided to alienate said customer. Very disappointing start to ownership experience to find combative Customer Service.

This is crazy. Have any more details about this incident? Temperature outside, recent temp drop or rise? Road conditions? I'm an engineer but not in thermodynamics. Just grasping at what could have led to instantaneous crystallization of said window.

if you’re not a bot, and someone actually shot at your car and shattered your rear window, why not return fire?

It didn’t spontaneously combust. Some impact was made with something hard enough to break glass and go bang, but great clickbait title for the thread bottie

you are in vain scoffing at the bot. Well, on the topic: tempered glass can explode by itself due to case and / or coincidence of vibrations. of course this is a very small percentage, but it is there.

I have had the rear window explode on two different vehicles while parked in my garage. It happens. All it takes is a minor defect in the tempered glass.

I was also a victim in my old Ford Edge. Woke up to the entire back window shattered (inside the garage, no extreme temps, nothing fell and hit it). Manufacturers definitely don't want to be bothered with glass defects!

I can confirm this is entirely possible as it just happened to me while driving 70 down the interstate, 2020 Telluride with 14k miles. Same passenger rear window. 9yr old son was cut to shit on hands and legs 3 hours into a 23hr drive from NY to Texas. We were in the middle of no where upstate NY with no other cars around us. Doing some research online this problem persists beyond just the Telluride. I'm looking forward to being told this isn't covered under warranty.

Happened in my 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. Driving down the interstate and heard a small “thunk” from the back. Two seconds later and the entire window shattered. I think a small rock hit it at just the right angle. Passenger windows are just tempered, they aren’t safety glass like the windshield. Either way, I get my glass tinted all the way around, even if the window has factory tint to it.

I found this forum and this thread by searching today for 2021 Kia Telluride rear window shattering. I was driving home from a dog show today when I heard a thunk, followed by the sound of shattering glass. The entire window in the door behind the driver's seat broke into small pieces. My insurance company thinks a rock from the road must have bounced up and hit it. It was very upsetting; "good" to hear that this happens rarely in other brands too.

Tempered glass is not going to break with a glancing blow by a rock. KIA has an issue with their tinted tempered glass, rear windows and sunroofs. I'd take it back to a dealer for replacement. Mine was replaced no problems at all. Very unsettling this is something you have to worry about. My kids are afraid to ride in the car now.

I certainly believe this but it's concerning nonetheless.

Various Palisade people have had this happen with the windshield and/or sunroof FWIW.
