Dealer Markup

Currently at a Kia dealership in the Chicago area getting a windshield replacement and snapped a pic of the markup sticker on a LX model...WOW!! Glad I’m just here for service...no way I would pay that price...

Wow... that's unfortunate. There are definitely dealerships in Chicagoland where you can get MSRP or less without these additional fees. Napleton (Elgin) participates in the Costco program (-$500 off MSRP) and I was able to get the same -$500 discount for an order at Classic Kia (Waukegan) +TTL, no extra dealer add-ons, +whatever applicable Kia incentives are available when I take delivery. Unfortunate to see these markups in Chicagoland, but definitely not as bad as CA or TX from reading other horror-stories on this forum!

SMH, $300 for wheel locks?! What are they made of element 36?

LOL...I I thought about the same thing when I first looked at the add on sticker. Those wheel locks run around $60 and that Simoniz and etching is a joke. I guess anyone that never washes or details their vehicle might think that’s a fair deal...not this ole boy...old school here. 2 bucket hand wash for me and then a coat of Insulator wax, rain X on the glass and a tire dressing suits me just fine.

I kept very good notes on what markup each dealership was charging in So Cal, feel free to reach out to me and I’ll happily share that info.

Not sure how to reach out to you directly, but I'm in the market for an SXP in So Cal and am interested in what you've learned. Thanks!

Unfortunately the only SXP’s that I saw available had at least $10k markups on them. That was back in June so maybe things have gotten easier since then. The dealerships that had them were Kia Downtown & Kia Car Pros of Glendale.

Yikes. Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll check farther out of LA then.

You are aware of the production issues with the Prestige package, correct? There are several threads here related to the extremely limited supply of SXP’s, I think due to the Napa leather seats supply issue. I believe the latest is that Kia has finally started to accept orders again for the premium package but I don’t think people are expecting them now until sometime in the Fall or even Winter.

For me, I thought I wanted a SXP but it wasn’t worth the loooong wait so I have a an AWD SX instead and I absolutely love it! I got mine at Kia of Irvine even though I live up in LA. My salesman was very honest & respectful, I highly recommend contacting Howard Scora. You can tell him that Marc with the gravity grey SX referred you. The only thing is that I had the absolutely worst experience with the very shady & deceitful finance manager named Sammy, so just beware of him. Even finding a SX in-stock was very difficult at the time so I agreed to put a deposit down for one that was already on order by the dealership and expected to arrive within a week. I had been looking aggressively for around a month to find a SX in-stock anywhere in So Cal for immediate purchase but no luck. I looked from San Diego to Bakersfield and finally agreed to pay a $3k dealer markup at Irvine, knowing that I was getting $2500 back in rebates and basically cancelling out the markup. I still think this vehicle is under priced so it was worth it to me to pay the markup in order to get the vehicle quickly so I could actually enjoy it. I would bet that the price will go up for the 2021 model year and was worried that if I waited until supply increased, I’d need to wait until this winter at the earliest but would also probably pay a higher base price.

Good to know. What are these rebates you speak of?

I went to Miami Lakes Kia and the had at least $1,500 in add fees. They said the dealer requies all cars to have 1. Etching 2. Apperance Protection 3. Gps tracking. They said all cars are sold with those 3 standard. Needless to say I left. Two days later they said they would remove them if I would come back in and purchase. LOL.
I bought my SX-P at Sunshine Kia in Miami. They didn't pull any of that crap and I got mine for $1k under MSRP and no extras. They were quick, professional and courteous. A pleasure to work with.

Here is the sticker from an SXP in SoCal. Pretty ridiculous, eh?

Been Looking for EX AWD or SX AWD in the Sanbernardino and Los Angeles area. Called Cerritos they have a SX AWD 12k over MSRP- EX 4k over MSRP.

At the 3 dealerships in Sacramento, the one with the markups is Roseville Kia, they are asking $5000 over MSRP
on all models, the other dealers are at base, The one Palisade dealer I went to, also in Roseville had $5000 over on all there cars. Not ever worth it to me

Nope

In the Sacramento Area, Elk Grove Kia has a dozen Tellurides today, 10 of which they've had for more than a week. They're all marked up $5K with NO extras added.
Folsom Lake & Roseville mark theirs up $5k but add 'value' features like paint protection, 20" wheels & tires and other non-optional, non requested high profit bs items.
Vacaville & Davis' markup is $5k with no add-ons.
Stockton's was $10k with the straight faced explanation that I couldn't find them at other local dealers. (Ever heard of the internet, not to mention they're 30 miles from Elk Grove,)

Some websites like Roseville's, show the MSRP on their listing, but when you call to verify, they tell you the pricing excludes all add-ons. (bait & switch?) I've found all salespeople to be amazingly arrogant about pricing. Still, they're finding people that will pay to play.

Most annoying to me of all though is that when you 'build' a Telluride on the Kia site, then get referred to your dealer, they STILL insist on adding at least a $3-5Kmarkup.

I'll wait... painful as it may be.
