Looking for a place willing to take an order at MSRP or some unicorn, unspoken for SX at MSRP and willing to order anywhere in the country. Has anyone been using failcat to look for cars h theiir specifics and had luck finding one that was unclaimed?

A bunch have on here sure. Just gotta dedicate some time to narrow down vehicle specs you want thru failcat and start calling places. Id imagine theres a bunch of unspoken for nightfall editions out there.
Most dealers should be up front with you about selling price and any mandatory dealer add ons, shipping options, mandatory warranties, etc. Make sure you place a refundable deposit and get a snap shot of the order from the dealer and a receipt for your deposit. Some will even send you a KIA sales worksheet showing you exactly what you'd pay at time of delivery. GL

I have! Here is my story....

I had ordered an SXP in Nightfall with Towing in MN and it was estimated to arrive in Sept (ordered in July). As I called more dealers (as my order was refundable) they all but laughed thinking I would get my Telluride in 6-8 weeks. Sure, it is possible, but I became more convinced I would not so I kept calling. I called every Kia dealer in MN, WI, IL, CO, ND, SD, IA and was told the same thing pretty much.... "No SXP, have 1-2 EX or SX" "No SXP, next one is due in October" "None, you can order one though".

In early August I found out about Failcat and started searching/watching the daily updates. Here is the fun part for me...

On August 12th, I screwed up my search (did not realize at the time) and thought I found a new entry as an SXP with Nightfall and Towing in Dark Moss/Dune Brown. I saw it was going to a MI dealer and said it was at least worth a call. To my surprise they said THIS one was not claimed and available. I immediately gave them my info and this too was refundable (nice to know as a few dealers were not if you order one). I then asked when it was arriving and she told me August 18th. NO WAY - how? After the call I went back and found my search and somehow (thank the universe) I screwed up my search and filtered off Date and just on trim/specs. The VIN was entered in early July!

I drove to MI last week, picked the Telluride up, and drove it back with the fam. Super lucky on my end for sure. I guess it was payoff for calling so many dealers but in the end... truly dumb luck, but I would not have had it without Failcat so major kudos to the guys running that site.

Anyways, hope that helps/inspires ya.

Stories like yours keep me going! I've called 26 dealerships so far...maybe #27 will be the lucky one? I'm running out of dealers I loosely consider "accessible!"

Agreed, been calling dozens. Just found one thanks to failcat who happened to have almost exactly what we wanted due in november.

Great. Did you put a deposit on that one and negotiate the price? All good? Most dealerships will have a recommended shipping company, but if not, there are many options when I searched last year. Perhaps your other post will generate some leads.

You lucky dog! Congrats! I mean...I kinda hate you, but I also hope to be you, so I'll just wish you well and go scream into my pillow a little more.

Nice! I'm hoping the same will happen for me... I've got an order in at St Cloud as well, and looking daily at dealers and calling. I even tried to drive to Omaha last week to pick one up that was on the lot, only to get a call when I was about to hit Des Moines (coming from Minneapolis) that they had sold it to someone else. LOL.

I need to brush up on how to use Failcat...

Yikes! I am sorry that happened.

In the future, best to call and put a deposit down (ensure it is refundable first) and to confirm they will not sell it if someone comes in asking to pay more, etc.

For Failcat, it seems that when a VIN is entered, it is in production/just finished production. It then takes time (weeks usually, rarely days) for the vehicle to be shipped to the dealer that is receiving the new unit. An average seems to be 6-8 weeks after a VIN shows in Failcat, but depending on where you live that can be closer to 4-6 months.

Just submitted the credit app. They are getting back to me with the destails and estimated costs and we will put the deposit down then. They said it was up to me to figure out shipping, but I guess I have time to do that. Wouldn’t mind driving it home if it was for the question mark of the weather in the northern US in November.

Well, I wouldn't have submitted a credit app until you were to purchase the vehicle. They should be able to tell you the price and you should be able to agree on that with a deposit. The credit app should only be submitted when you take delivery before you go to finance. I tell you this only because this dealership is likely to have a large addendum to price - which they will add if you don't have an agreement on price. So, keep that in mind for the next dealership you contact if you can't agree on a price with this one.

The order of things should be:

Order or find one en route
Agree to price and options in writing with sales manager
Put a deposit down (small and refundable) to hold order or allocated unit
Make sure sales manager signs off on it

When Delivery happens, then you can submit credit application and iron out financing terms. Be aware of Kia's current promotions at time of delivery.

great advice, thank you!

should dealers be able to give an exact out the door price before placing a deposit? I heard some say they cannot do that until the vin is created.

Yes, absolutely they can, and you should ONLY leave a deposit once a purchase agreement is signed. No need for a credit app. Don't leave a deposit for open-ended contract... you'll just be surprised with a massive addition to price at delivery. Then you'll have to negotiate that when you've already left a deposit! You'll just end up unhappy.

The only reason some dealerships don't want to do that is because they want to sell the vehicle to the highest bidder. And they want to add a market adjustment when they have the vehicle inbound.

I would say, in my experience, 19/20 Kia dealerships are terrible and will have a large markup or shady sales practices. I would say stick to one of the "good dealers" that people have had a positive experience at listed on this forum or if you insist on another dealership, really hammer out details with a manager. At some dealerships, the salesperson has very little actual power and it's his job to tell you want you want to hear and then bring the bad news of markups /add ons from the manager.

Btw, the post below should help a lot too.

I found one using failcat. Called the dealer and it was available being delivered in about a week. It’s the only way to cut around the order and wait process. Keep calling dealers, persistence will pay off.

Exactly my post above summed up in three sentences. Cannot stress this enough.

I did last year when it was nearly impossible to find one. Fortunately I was successful after a month of going crazy.

We put an order down with a local dealer in Atlanta in early November, found out in Dec the order was placed wrong once they sent me the order details so I cancelled it. Started using the online tool to find our unicorn (I wasn't going to settle for color / options) . I was willing to travel, and kept my search wide open. Found a few, but they were either pre-sold, or sold out from under me while waiting for the sales mgr to call me back or priced way above MSRP. Luckily, found a small dealer in NC that had one hit their lot Christmas Eve, so called them the morning of the 26th as soon as they opened, found it was available, negotiated price at MSRP, put down small deposit, got a one-way rental and drove up later that morning. Dealer called me half way up, and my heart sank dreading the "sorry, we sold the car" message. Fortunately they were calling to make sure I was still on the way. They had 2 people stop in that morning wanting to purchase, but they held it for me. My wife was happy to get her new car, but even more happier that I finally stopped obsessing over finding exactly what I wanted. Best 6 hour drive back home ever. 8 months later, absolutely love the car!

Hang in there, persistence will pay off!!

I haven't hit the lottery yet, nobody has the Everlasting Silver/Dune/Nightfall combo. So I sit and wait for my order to run its course.
