• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Hey everyone. Im experiencing a popping or thud sound from the drivers rear suspension. It can only be heard at low speeds or when bouncing up and down on it when its parked. Ive check the wheel and lug nuts and Ive laid under it while I had someone bounce it up and down....I havent tried laying under it at low speeds yet ;) I has the self leveling rear suspension/tow package. My only guess at this point is the bushing in the shock has too much friction and make a noise once enough pressure has been applied. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this....its quite annoying.

I should also mention everything is out of the vehicle including the jack and tools as well as the seatbelts have been secured.

No, but maybe this link can help. Seems like a very rare issue with no defined solution yet.

Theirs is happening at high speed. Took it to the dealer. They are replacing the rear shocks. Seems to be a common problem with the self leveling shocks that come with the tow package.

Glad you got it resolved. No issues with my self leveling shocks - does seem like a rare problem. Thanks for following up.

I have a 2020 SX-P with self-leveling tow package with 4,400 miles and do not experience anything like this.

I did hear a “pop” when my car arrived after a six month wait, but that’s about it so far...

I’ve heard a few pops depending on departure angle in the rear suspension. I need to bring it into dealer now.

Yes we have the same issue at low speeds. I am an old mercedes benz tech and it sounds like a strut to me. Having it checked this week.

ColoradoTelluride - did the replacement shocks fix the problem? We are having the exact problem you described with our 21 sx w/tow pkg

I started to experience similar rattle/thud from rear at around 15k miles. It was more prominent at low speeds like 15-30 mph but If paid more attention could be heard at speed around 60-70 mph but offcourse masked by road and wind noise. This can be reproduced by bouncing trunk with body weight. Took it to dealership, the tech who inspected said everything is fine and this little noise is "normal" for SX trim. I requested service manager to test drive with me who acknowledged the abnormal noise. I was told to wait until they discuss this with Tech support at KIA. 3 months went by and heard nothing, wrote to KIA main office but sadly no response. 4 month later went to same dealership, asked for dealership manager, explained all the previous encounters, he was kind enough and connected me with service tech who then took me seriously and opened a tech case with main KIA. KIA corporate sent a rear shock replacement after which noise resolved. I was concerned that same OEM replacement may result in failure in few months and this is what happened. I have driven 10 K miles since, disappointingly same noise has started to come back but mild at this point.

Please let me know if anyone knows of a aftermarket replacement for this self leveling shock system.

Maybe the “standard” OEM version of the shock vs. the non-leveling shock is the way to go.

Yes we have too. Just started. It’s in the right rear. Happens while driving and after car has stopped. It’s definitely a pop

We have a 21 SX Prestige with self-leveling and started noticing the same sound at about 10K miles, it was very mild at first. We now have 20K miles and its more frequents and louder. We notice it back out of our driveway or slight turns only. Its annoying.

What is the solution?

Bring it to the dealer. There is a TSB.

What is a TSB? Do you have a reference link or something I can point out to the dealer?
Might not cover your model depending on manufacturing date.

TSB = technical service bulletin.

Perfect, thank you! I have a service appointment today and when I mentioned it over the phone, they seem clueless. She said she's aware of a bad bushing issue that makes a rattling noise, but not the "pop" I'm explaining. I'll print and bring it with me today.
