2020 Telluride AWD rear end jerking thumping and vibrating

Any chance this is just a build quality issue and 99.9% of folks are just not realizing its there...or it's their 2nd or 3rd Kia and they are used to the "Kia" ride by now. If that's the case then I can see how Kia is saying hey this is kind of normal for us...we obviously don't want to hear that crap though!

For me - it's not a deal breaker...just annoying.

Nah, no vibration here. Came from a fairly quiet and smooth handling Honda. First Kia. If I felt that vibration or felt the build wasn't right, I'd be taking it in for inspection/repair.

Please let us know what those mechanics and the Driveshaft company say - it would be helpful to all that are following this thread.

I called Kia Consumers today since it has been a month when they asked me for all the information. I was told that based on the Kia Tech Engineer's report, there is nothing wrong with my vehicle. I AM LIVID!!!
I have asked the Service Manager and General Manager at the dealer I have been dealing with and they are both riding with me tomorrow to experience the vibration. The Service Manager said he did not go with the Kia Tech when he used the Picoscope so as far as I'm concerned, he could have had it laying in the back of my vehicle.
I will take it on to the Chevrolet dealer for the Picoscope test but am weighing paying any more money out on this lemon. I am considering taking my loss and trading it in. The Irish in me says keep fighting though.
I fell with the Service Manager and General Manager with me, the GM can get on the phone and raise hell with Kia with more weight than I can.
I am pretty sick about this.
I first drove an AWD Telluride and was about to buy it and I got diagnosed with lung cancer. Spent a week in the hospital with a collapsed lung, 3 months later went through part partial lung removal, chemo, and then 30 rounds of radiation. It was hell. I waited until my second clean bill of cancer-free screening before purchasing mine. Now I have another battle to fight and I'm not sure if it's worth it. I sure feel victimized though.
I will post any new information I get but I think the only way to fight a giant is to hire a Goliath.

@Bev do you have a vibration standard in the united states? If not, the kia will slip away, blaming it on a telluride feature. They ask you a question in court - did you take a road test before buying? you will have to answer - yes. Then you understand ..... I see the only way is that the manufacturer and / or the seller kept silent about this feature. Misleading.

agreed on that - they can't have a TSB out on this and rather just "fight" back on a case-by-case basis.

It ultimately comes down to how much skin the in the game your dealer has and if they can push Kia Techline to go through the necessary steps. I will say the dealership you pick to get this issue resolved will be much more important than where you bought it.

My dealership just said that they will look at mine but the Palisade TSB doesn't hold any weight and is completely irrelevant...here we go....

If I ever got to court well I'll say the dealership doesn't have any highways around and the salesperson was in the vehicle with me during my test drive and told me exactly where to go instead of me driving it by myself...also during COVID who wants to be sitting in a vehicle next to each other longer than a few minutes?

These issues can get dicey in court quickly...

The KEY for any people picking up their rides - TAKE it on the highway up to speed. Do no just be OK with a quick drive around the block.

I went on a road test based on where the salesman told me to go. I did not get up to 65 mph on the test drive.

I bought it from a dealership 250 miles away. They didn't have any in Texas because at that time, the Kia plant was working on a skeleton crew.

1) Get your own lawyer and have them help you get through your own situation. Don’t worry about rallying others or figuring out a class action. Just worry about your own Telluride and how you can get help. As I mentioned previously you can probably find a lawyer to help you “for free” (if they’re successful, Kia will have to pay their costs).

2) Or, trade it in for something else. Tellurides are holding value right now and you won’t take much of a loss (if any). Go find another vehicle you like and get that instead.

It sounds like you will lose a lot of time, money, and sleep fighting with the service department and Kia, and will likely not get far with them. Their tune is not going to change overnight - it just is what it is. Let a lawyer handle it for you, or give up the T and let it be someone else’s problem.

1 - Do you have the courts, if you won, cover any costs for a lawyer? As far as I understand, you, as with us, have court rules in which the rate is indicated, the judge takes this amount, but in fact the lawyers take much more.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, just a moderately informed/researched individual

Every situation is different but in my research I’ve found that some lawyers won’t charge anything if there is no recovery, and the lemon law provides for fee shifting which means the manufacturer pays the fees.

I have one lawyer I’m considering working with if anything else happens where the structure is basically like:
- If I lose, I pay nothing
- If we settle as a lemon, they go to the manufacturer to get fees paid
- If we settle as a cash payment, they take a cut

One possible resolution is to trade in the AWD with vibration issues for a FWD and get better tires and/or a winter set. It’s pretty darn close to the same performance as an AWD with stock tires, no risk of vibration issues, less road noise, better fuel efficiency, same towing capacity, more cargo capacity, and less cost overall to buy and to maintain. If reported vibration issues in AWD start to climb it may mean that FWDs also retain their value better than AWDs. I personally would not buy a used AWD without having it thoroughly inspected by a mechanic looking for these types of issues. Of course if you picked a package that bundles in AWD this is not an option.

If enough people shy away or voice their concerns before placing an order for the AWD for fear of vibration problems Kia may address the issue at inspection time. But as long as they keep selling the problem might continue to be classified as insignificant until the model reliability rating years from now says differently. If you can’t detect it unless you go 80mph I doubt they have it in their quality test plan to drive it that fast off the assembly line. As long as the AWDs are in high demand this is a potential problem that is only growing because they are building more and getting them done faster unless they address catching it somehow at factory inspection at quality control checkpoints.

I know I’ve been challenged on this forum for my opinion of better winter tires on a FWD being as good as AWD with all season tires. This vibration problem is an example that AWD is introducing more issues to worry about. I think modern AWD (not 4WD or 4x4) is in part a gimmick to charge more and make people feel they are buying something that will help them drive better. As long as you drive for the conditions and have tires for the conditions a FWD in snow is a perfectly safe option. AWD will not get you to your destination any faster.

If you have one on order, this is just an idea to consider or feel free to ignore me. My advice is free either way. Consider if you get one with the bum differential, are you more likely to drive fast in good conditions to notice the vibration or are you more likely going to need the minor added acceleration during heavy rain and snow? If enough low mileage AWDs start showing up on used lots that will send a message and Kia will start to wonder.

If you already bought your AWD and want to keep it even though you are experiencing the vibration this post may not help you and I’m sorry for your troubles and hope that Kia will do right by you.

If you are holding out for a TSB or recall, it may take a while. Consider Kia just issued one that could impact as many as 295,000 vehicles. Until this is a problem of critical mass this could just continue to be a problem for individual service departments to handle on a case-by-case. Thank you for that advice and I am weighing my options.
I do not know what else to purchase right now.
I always knew Consumer Reports were bought and the T is rated 97. rotfl
That's because they do not see the complaints.
I have a busy afternoon but will try and look for something this week.
I do not think I want the headache or stress of fighting this but will still get my independent reports and upload it for others to use.
