Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

You all are correct these dealers are crazy!

We all know cars decrease in value once we buy them and this car is no exception. So they expect us to pay over what the maker suggests the car is worth! That is just insane to me. I ordered one finally from a dealer that agreed to no markup.

I only got that deal because I had a previous experience with the GM for the entire brand. This is a really nice car but

As an unrepentant capitalist, I don't necessarily have a problem with the markups. Obviously they are finding plenty of people willing to pay them, only time will tell if it causes these dealers lasting harm.

For myself, I'm not willing to pay the markup so I am searching (and have found at least one) for a dealer that will order for at or below MSRP. I'm trading time for money, which I am fortunately in the position to do.

That is how I feel as well.

Every Atlanta area dealer that I've called is selling the SX at a premium. You can hear the greed in their voice when you say the word "...Telluride".

Seriously, can anyone explain to me why Kia makes so many EX, base models or the SX with no options that just sit on the lot. They probably makes the same amount of all versions equally, but clearly the base model is not in demand like the SX. Can't they adjust to market demand and equalize production to meet that demand.

I had a weird experience with a dealer in Maryland. I put a down payment on a Black Ebony EX for 45k about a month ago - maybe October 10 2020. The guy said the dealer marked it up 6k, but that other dealers were marking it up 12k. I’m not sure if that’s over MSRP or not. But when I went to the dealer to ask some questions before the car came in, the MSRP was 45k. I’m not sure if that includes the 6k mark up. I asked and they didn’t answer. No bueno. I think they were trying to jam me for another 6k. Forget that. I do not like bait-and-switch.

Soooo.... I hit the “forget it” button, went to another dealer, and bought an SX Prestige Nightfall for 54k. Why buy a marked up EX? Might as well just buy the SX. Better resale anyway.

54k is marked up too. I think you’ve paid about 3-4K over MSRP depending on which port installed options were included

Thanks for the response. I think you’re absolutely right. I just wanted the car and didn’t want to screw around. It’s the 2021 SX Prestige Nightfall which is a lot cheaper than luxury SUVs and it’ll resell well so I won’t take a total bath.

Checking local in the midwest. So far:

Kia of Des Moines $5,000 extra
Anderson Kia St. Joseph Missouri $5,000 extra
Billion Kia Iowa City $3,400 "protection plan"

Rick Case Kia in Duluth, GA

$7,500 marked up on SX prestige - saleman even proudly pointed that out to me like I'm an idiot who was willing to pay that markup.

No test drive unless you commit to buying, even the very basic trims.

Asking about custom ordering one, said they don't accept orders anymore.

Called the other dealership across town, eveything is opposite. Went with that one instead.

The dealership in Bowie MD affirmatively jerked me around, gave me a 45k number which I verified, then I went to check on some details before the car came in, and they randomly moved the number up 6k, from 45k to 51k ... for an EX!!! Can’t work with blatant liars because the dealer long-term would be a major problem. Slimy business practices never work in the long-term.

I went to a neighboring state’s dealer a few days later and got an SX AWD Prestige Nightfall for a few thousand more than what the Bowie dealer wanted for the EX. They didn’t try to rip me off. They gave me a marked up number, but they were honest about up front which is all I ask.

Don’t let unscrupulous dealers play you. Go find a competitor.

I love America!

To be honest, I'd hate to pay any markup for any kind of mass-production vehicle. I read the thread about good dealers and found the one that does not put markup on their vehicles.

Did some research on Cars.com this morning and found a 2021 SX AWD with MSRP $46,760. I called the dealer (World Car Kia of New Braunfels, TX) to ask if they'd be willing to sell it at or around sticker. I already have one on order but figured I could avoid the wait if they were willing to make a deal.

He said they aren't marking up their cars but that they do have a dealer installed 'Appearance Package' option that they add to all of their Tellurides. All I could think was... here we go again...

This option apparently includes a paint protection package, leather protection, window tint, and wheel locks. (So basically b**l s**t :poop:). And can you guess the cost?? $6,698. I literally laughed the guy off the phone... what a joke. The total with this would have been $57,570 which is a solid 11k above what the car retails for. At that price I'd rather have a certified pre-owned BMW X5.

Buyer beware! - dealers doing this are complete scam artists. Even if they aren't marking up the base price, they're adding on 'appearance packages' that aren't able to be taken off.
I had a very similar experience with World Car Kia in San Antonio. It was around a $5,000 markup for an appearance package on a S model in the Sangria color.

I tried my local dealership in Corpus Christi, where I purchased a previous new vehicle a few years back. We were talking numbers over a car that had not been delivered yet. She tried hitting me with a $2,000 markup for tint and some other nonsense. She said they add it to all of their Tellurides. I was hoping that since the vehicle hadn't even arrived yet, and since I was a returning customer and was planning on being a frequent customer in the future, they wouldn't add the $2,000 tint! I was wrong. She also basically told me fat chance on finding any dealership in Texas that would not charge a markup.

Then I called Stephen from Classic Kia Carrollton. The saleswoman in Corpus Christi was wrong.

Excellent. If we keep publishing the names of unscrupulous dealers, word gets around all over the country.

Exactly. Situations like mine, that are happening all over the country, are what make me think this dealers are being extremely shortsighted. My local dealership prioritized making an additional $2,000 off of me in markups over my continued business with them. I will never make another purchase at that dealership. Ultimately, that has to be their loss.

Tom Kadlec KIA Rochester, MN $5k markup.

Dsm clone....Des Moines cyclones? Lol. Go state!! I too had to go out of state to get at MSRP. Got exactly what i wanted via Bob Sight Kia. Ask for Matt Rodecap. Only paid MSRP plus $199 for doc fees. NOTHING else. Tax is higher in Independence MO than IA so just paid IA tax when I registered it back in IA. Matt took $500 down and ordered my exact veh I wanted. Only a 3 hour drive to KC area. Here she is!

Cool. I know Des Moines. Looks like I’m getting almost the same thing. SX AWD Prestige Nightfall Black Copper Dune Interior. Can’t wait. After the Kia of Bowie MD fiasco, I went to Kia of Wilmington DE and was treated much better. Stay away from Kia Bowie. Good luck!

That's right. Go state. I was hoping to find one without ordering but that seems to be nearly impossible. Thanks for the info.
