• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Cold start screeching noise

Yup. Mines doing it again. The colder it is, the more and longer it does it. So lame.

Plugging in the block heater cord at night helps...i think..it didnt make the noise this morning..

Makes sense to me, as if it only happens during cold weather it means its somehow related to either thermal contraction or changes in material behaviour when frozen. By warming the engine, the block heater would address both those scenarios to some (but not all) extents.

I have this same problem. Kia told me the intake is frozen and eventually opens as normal.

Mine was bad this morning. I hope that’s just air whistling because it sounds horrible.

For me it was the idler pulley. They replaced the alternator and water pump too, but it ended up being the idler pulley.

That fixed it for good?

Put a hairdryer in the belt area for about 15 minutes Sunday morning and 10 minutes this morning and no screeching. Hmmm

It fixed it for a couple days, but I just started it this morning and the noise was still there, not as loud though. I wonder if KIA's idler pulley part if just bad. The noise was non existent after the idler pulley was replaced, but like I said a couple days later it is making the noise, just quieter.

Curious direction the suggestions are arriving.

Cold start screeching is almost always a belt deflection roller and/or belt tensioner. It's trying to give you advance notice: "Hey buddy, maybe you need to replace me?" Heed it.

The intake one (suggestion) is a weird one. This would likely suggest that the Crankcase Ventilation Separation system is somehow at fault, during very cold mornings? If true, there's an highly increased level of vacuum (outside of tolerance) in the engine and the front and/or rear crankshaft seals have high vacuum being drawn in to the engine during cold start. Creating a whistling or screeching noise. This is something that needs to be attended to!

I've not heard of the Telly V6 doing such. Other makes/engines; yes.

Self diagnosis: Remove the belt. Cold start it with the belt off (less than 60 seconds) is the noise gone? Reinstall belt, clear charging system faults and get new belt/tensioner/roller.

(Sorry I've been away, doing the snowbird thingy.)

I’m in Chicago with currently -7 degree weather. Remote started my car and heard it squealing. This is the 2nd time this winter I’ve heard it and I drive my car daily. Had my Telluride since 2021 and this just started happening this year. I read through the thread but didn’t see a diagnosis. Im curious if anyone ever found out exact what this is.

2025 Telluride x-line pro. Same here when extremeky cold. Goes away within a minute…or two.

I have a 2024 XPro and get the same sound when it has sat out overnight, below zero. I showed a video to the service department at my dealer and they said there was another complaint earlier. They had no idea what it could be. So basically, in 5 years KIA hasn't figured it out!

2020 Telluride here. I'm having this issue and it started last year. We've had the vehicle going on 3 years now bought used but it still has its original warranty on it. Love the vehicle, hate the squeal. They've already replaced the compressor and it's doing it again. Bottom line is, it has to be cold out. As Spring is upon us here in Upstate NY, I'm afraid that they're not going to be able to replicate the sound again. They already tried to tell us they couldn't replicate the sound and give us the car back. Luckily, when I went to pick it up it was cold enough. So, I had the technician come out during the cold start and what do you know, squeal. That's when he noticed a piece by the belt not spinning and said it looks like the compressor is bad. They had our car for a week. Now, it's doing it again because its cold out. I've recorded every time during a cold start. So I have evidence.
