Consider the Price Gouging Officially Over

I always find it odd that folks complain so bitterly about dealers that charge over MSRP (i.e. the “gouging” term) in times of high demand yet think it fine if they push the dealer to invoice (or lower) during periods of low demand. It cuts both ways and I don’t hold it against a dealer who does markups, as long as they’re upfront about it. I don’t have to buy and the dealer doesn’t have to sell.

Car buying/selling needs to evolve to a less adversarial process. It’s hard on everyone and sucks all the fun out of something that should be pleasurable.

- Mark
Let's be absolutely clear about one thing. The dealer advertised on their web site 2020 KIAs for $1 over invoice. I asked the salesman if that pricing applied to Tellurides and was told it would apply to their last one on the lot. It's a simple supply and demand case where the dealer decides how much profit he's willing to accept. My guess is if we're looking at a severe recession or even a depression dealers are going to settle for less. No one is forcing them to sell at invoice. Don't be surprised if they try to get another $1,000 for processing and paperwork.

Well said Mark. It is a game that shouldn't be. This large of a purchase should be enjoyable, not a test of mental fortitude for those who know better once they take a seat in that finance office.

Lol it’s sad that you have no idea what some hairdressers make and had the nerve to make such a ignorant statement. I make 100000 plus a year i can clearly afford a 900 dollar payment . I don’t live beyond my means if I did I would not be driving a Kia .! Maybe next time do some research before you make a ignorant statement like that! Have a great day! Lmao
Sorry that you had to go on defensive here, I wasn't trying to be mean. I know you make a lot of money, that's why I cut my own hair (simple cut) saves me 25$+tip ever 3-4 weeks. When wife goes every other month that's 150-180$, you guys charge a fortune. While I make less than you on my own, I would never put myself in that financial situation. This just started and you are already looking for solutions, and came here to complain about ''huge 900$ payment''. What if this lasts 3-6 months, what if your business is cut in half and you're not making 100k anymore (very likely, my wife already bought her own color to dye hair)? Why didn't you have an emergency fund, that can weather you for couple months, that's your personal decision. I apologize for judging you. I have a secure job FOR NOW, any day they can tell us that we're laid off, even if I had 500$ payment I would be stressing out. But I have an emergency fund, luckily, I come from a county that saw war of 4 years and I just always have it on my mind to have money FOR FOOD! Kids, health and food, nothing else matters. I'm glad I didn't pay greedy dealers when I needed SUV, but for now I'll be happy with my drivable sedan to push me and my family through this.

All the best to you, wish you health and hopefully we recover quicker that what is projected.

Most people don't have an emergency fund. Most people either lease or 100% finance their cars. I typically finance around 50% of my car purchase and buy much much less than what the bank says I qualify for. Anyone that gets a mortgage based on the max the bank will finance or finances 100% of their car purchase typically are over-extended and won't be able to survive any type of financial downturn or gap in employment. I am a big fan of Dave Ramsey - although not a true disciple as I am not 100% debt free. My rules for financial success: Never buy a house without 20% down and never, never, never buy a house on a 30-year mortgage. And your car note shouldn't be more than 20% of your gross take home pay. Follow those steps and put at least 10% of your income in a retirement fund while maintaining your 3-6 month emergency fund - and things like the Coronavirus won't faze you. Better yet - follow those steps and be content to live on less than you make - and you will retire and live better than all your friends - no matter your income. Contentment, savings, peace.

Wife emailed Parkside Kia in Knoxville, and you wouldn’t believe the BS they laid in her! Still adding a 4 grand “market adjustment”. She said she will buy a car from someone else who isn’t gouging it’s customers. Received another email from the manager which basically doubled down while using a bunch of slick language to disguise what they are doing. I’d rather buy a Ford pinto than deal with shady dealerships! We’re ready to buy if they can get the prices right!🤷‍♂️

lol you certainly were trying to be mean so please stop. Once again making assumptions . First I was not on site looking for a way out someone mentioned what Kia was offering stupidly I made the comment that that was good and maybe I should have not bought a car if I had know this was going to happen. I thanked the person for the advice. Never once did I say I would take advantage of it. You made the comments! Why are you even on this site first of all? You don’t even drive a telluride! Lol u also again made a statement that I don’t have enough to carry me through times like this......u know this because? U would never put your self in that position. well I am not in that position because I am not stupid and I can afford and do drive a 47000 vehicle....so go f your self! Why are you even one this site. Don’t judge anyone you are cocky and obviously jealous....done !

Yes I did! We were state mandated to close. I am a hairdresser.... this is great news just made my payment this month. 900 is a huge payment lol hopefully can make next payment also after that if I am not back working I will definitely take advantage of that! Thank you this news is good!

Before you go telling folks to "f" themselves...you should remember the internet has a long memory. No reason to be so rude to someone on this site. And oh by the way - you did actually say that you would "take advantage of that". Included your quote to refresh your memory.

I’ll exclude myself from this now insulting conversation. Like MarcinTexas quoted you above, you said “hopefully I can make next payment”. Enough said, right. Please be safe and take care of yourself, our school is canceled for the year. It looks like our jobs will pause as well. I wish nothing but prosperity to all, when you prosper I prosper as well.

Also hairdressers are one of the only trades that survived the great depression.

I apologize just sick of people who make cracks about hairdressers like it is some type of lowly career. You were rude in your comments and I reacted for that I am sorry. Luckily I do have money in saving and hopefully can get back to work in a couple of months. My advice to you is don’t assume and stands the same minus my horrible use of words .

Why are you even on this site first of all? You don’t even drive a telluride! Lol

Seriously? I'd imagine over half the people who frequent this forum don't own a Telluride yet. They are using the resources, experience and kindness of other people to help them locate and purchase a vehicle. If you'd like, I'd be happy to assist you off your high horse.

That's fair enough, but in @Stacyg defense, why lurk (it seems actively) on a kia telluride forum for almost a year if you have no intention of ordering/buying one?

I don’t lurk, I am actively interested. I follow this forum because I still didn’t buy, but started following before 90% of you here. I live in CA where they charged 7-8k over, plus 10% taxes. Even if I was making 100s of Ks a year I wouldn’t put my family under that strain. My mortgage is many times what payment for this car would be. But I don’t want to put myself in that situation. You have people that have mortgage or rent 900$ and KIA payment 800$, is that smart, idk, for me not.

90% of my posts are from first 3months of this forum, when 6ppl bought the car. Since then I just follow and read to stay in touch when ready to buy. If both me and my wife keep our jobs, and this pandemic slows down, I’ll be out there looking for deals. Because I don’t have to buy, I don’t have an urge, I have a drivable car, and I don’t have an itch for a new one, just need. Figured I’d be better buying new KIA, than used Acura or Toyota idk, because I plan to keep it long time.

CAsuKiHy, my takeaway is simple. Don't judge others based on their financial capabilities or knowledge. You most likely don't know their complete situation. What's Smart for others may not work for you, and that's cool. Would it be fair for us to judge you simply because you appear to have a substantial mortgage payment? No it wouldn't. Continue to be positive and coach others. That's the true value of forums like this - learning from others.

I am the same as you I guess! I don’t buy cars often. The 3 cars we own currently are a 2010 Honda Odyssey that we bought brand new, a 2007 Chevy Silverado that was bought used, and a 1997 Jeep TJ bought used. We drive our cars for a long time, and research every decision to a nauseating point. We’ve been ready to buy a Telluride for some time now, but haven’t due to the unwillingness of dealers to negotiate in fairness. Soooo, we wait not because we can’t afford the purchase of a car, but because we value being treated fairly at the purchase point, as it is an indicator of how we will be treated post purchase. I’ll probably still be lurking here for months to come, waiting to buy a car under my terms.

Absolutely agree with you. I was little quick to ''judge'' someone and I apologized for that. I was under impression of news of hundred of thousands of people loosing jobs. Exact reason I'm on this forum is to learn from others experience, that be financial or mechanical or anything in between. Wish You all health and may we all get back on track as soon as possible.

1st Gear: The Car Sales News Is Bad!
Let’s check in on Hyundai:

Hyundai, one of the hottest brands over the last 24 months behind an expanded crossover lineup, posted a 43 percent decline in U.S. sales last month, underscoring the sudden impact the coronavirus is having on automakers and dealers alike.
March deliveries totaled 35,118, with retail demand falling 39 percent and fleet volume dropping 54 percent, Hyundai said, even as the brand quickly rolled out a promotion that included no-interest loans and deferred payments for four months on select models.
In the first two months of the year, Hyundai’s U.S. deliveries rose 11 percent, but volume dropped 11 percent in the first quarter on the sharply weaker March results.

I'm dying for a haircut right now. When the stay at home order is lifted, haircuts will be the new toilet paper. Unavailable everywhere.
