Dealer Markup

Also having read through this entire thread... it’s interesting to me that people are driving upwards of 10ish hours each way to save 1500-2k and not factoring in the money spent on gas, tolls, hotel, maybe airfare for one way driving, food, and added mileage on their new (and existing possibly) vehicle. It would probably be nearly a wash in savings.

I think you’re way overestimating the cost to travel to pick up a car. I’ll have to travel from Atlanta to Indiana for mine and there’s no way I’ll spend more than a few hundred to do so. One-way flights can easily be found for less than $125 during the week (heck, even Delta first class is a only $250). Add in maybe two tanks of gas to get home and a couple meals - I won’t exceed $350.

Hi All - new here and (as many of you) interested in an SX-P. Went to test drive one yesterday at a dealer in north NJ, drove nearly an hour to be given the runaround that this car is a unicorn and they don’t let just anyone test drive it. After a very direct conversation they agreed to let me test drive, I refused to test out an LX as it wasn’t the car I am interested in. With that said... the sales manager told me Kia is no longer taking orders for the vehicle from the public, anyone know if there is any truth to that? He was trying to sell the car he had in hand to me at 5K over MSRP. I like the car but not enough to pay over sticker. Any advice at this point in the year anyone can share would be much appreciated. I am also considering a 2020 highlander platinum, I have test driven this model locally and it is still available for purchase. That may be the tie breaker for me if I can’t find a fairly priced Telluride.

It would all depend on ones specific circumstances. I'm purchasing to keep at a second home where the total production for the state for the model that I want is 1 since the first of the year. Therefore, I have to find one out of that state. Where I primarily live, the markups are at least 7 if not 10. Ordering from someone like Muncie (thanks Jason and Lucas) I'm paying less than MSRP. So, flying in and adding the extra day drive than I would have from here adds maybe $500 to the already expected transportation expenses. I would therefore have to find one for less than MSRP where I live to offset the extra $500. I am also privileged enough not to have to take time off of work. I will end up being thousands ahead in the long run. That's just my story - others will vary

I'm from NYC and went to pick up my Telluride from Kia of Muncie - Indiana. Took a one way flight to Indianapolis, free pick up at the airport, and drove back 11 hours. Here's my cost breakdown.

Flight - 10,000 United points. Cash price was around $200 (This was a couple days before Thanksgiving mind you).
Toll - $53
Gas - $85 (Just two fill ups needed)
Food - Just Starbucks and Walmart snacks.

Total ~$350 (I'm counting as if I paid cash for the ticket)

Summary: I flew to Indiana, drove back 11 hours, and didn't come close to spending $1,000. I saved way more on my Costco discount than I paid for the trip. @Jason Fox and Lucas from Kia of Muncie are fantastic and you should give them a shot.

That's awesome! I am buying from Muncie and it's about a 4 hr trip each way (Northern IL). I have to drive out because i'm trading my explorer in. I talked to Lucas today - there's 12 SX AWD's ahead of me and they get 2-3 a month. So i'm hoping for a May/June phone call that it's time to make the trip! Can't wait.

Its not limited by state, we have saw NJ dealers charging $20K over MSRP. I have two dealers within 10 miles of me in Maryland, one is charging over MSRP, once is matching kia.com dollar for dollar. If the dealer is charging extra, just look for another dealer.

I got mine at my local Fargo North Dakota dealer, Kia of Fargo. White SX with Butterscotch and tow pkg. $400 off MSRP, another $400 for military and another $1000 for using financing. I plan to pay off fast since I only owe $18400 on it out the door due to a paid off Sorento trade. They charge minimal for doc fees. I'm happy

Current Corona Virus panic and stock market meltdown overblown?? Yup. Chances of "Market Adjustments" evaporating soon from suddenly nervous dealers are increasing daily though!!

Yep.....give it another month and they will be selling them below invoice.

dealers in Los Angeles area still asking 5k+

Covid induced delusion?

The article has a chart showing a dealer in Erie, PA quoting a price of $44,830 for an SX-P before TTL and fees, and $46,732.97 OTD. That sounds pretty darn good to me, which is why I don’t believe it. I’m thinking the vehicle was an AWD standard SX.

Except for our one poster who claims he was able to get an SX-P for around $43,000 right at release, has anyone else managed to get one at anything close to this price? I doubt it.

The $2200 discount is the 36-month KMF lease cash incentive that the dealer plugged in. They'll get it back times two in finance charges as the article alludes to. The writer isn't familiar with all of Kia's promotions and tendency to use lease cash as an additional incentive. Also, the writer doesn't add in Kia's lease fee, which would add another $650 to the total (article also excludes the disposition fee - and additional $300 or $400). The taxes appear low - the client's state probably only taxes on lease payments and not vehicle purchase price.

My SX-P was $45k before TTL after rebates ($2500 total) in August. Missed out on the Owners Club cash - that would have been another $750. If I bought the same vehicle now, it would be $47,265. (Current MSRP less $1000 finance rebate.)

If only we knew then what we know now... I’m kicking myself for not diving in right away, especially since I was eligible for the Founder’s Club discount..

Yeah, it's been a wild ride. We had to move when we did due to expanding family - but I was thinking like you in March - wait a while and there will be discounts. Now we have lower incentives and higher prices. Plus more markups!

So if I went through Costco could I get below MSRP? I would drive anywhere. They are all Marked UP 10K for SX up and down the east coast. I look at KIA.com, CARS.Com and other sites and the price listed is normal and when you contact them, they want 10K over. I over analyze everything and I started this search not sure on any of the cars I looked at. Came to love the Telluride, but now I am pissed because of this nonsense. I test drove the Mazda CX-9, Telluride, Atlas, Tiguan, Highlander, Sorento and they all had the same feel except for the underpowered tiguan. I am coming from a 2011 CX-9 that I do not want to put anymore money into.

I feel like giving up on the Telluride and get the Atlas and save money with all the incentives they have. The only problem with that is it does not jive with my longer term plan of keeping it 10+ years so my son can drive it. Thoughts anyone?

Look no further. We sell below MSRP through the Costco Auto Program. Fly in and drive home or we ship.

Get the Telluride. You'll love it. It's better than any other of those vehicles. Don't pay over sticker.
