How to change the oil in your Kia Telluride

Did my first oil change today at 1152 miles with Mobil 1 full synthetic and Kia oil filter. Removing oil drain plug and the oil filter went smooth. The 8 bolts on the skid plate was the most time consuming. I had to twist off the old crush ring off the oil drain plug. The new crush ring went on smoothly, it just fell on.

Sweet video and responses- all were pertinent and helpful, thanks! Since Hyundai dealership is closer to me I gambled and stopped by to see if Palisade filter kit was interchangeable. Tech there made a call and verified it does. Bought it and of course the filter has smaller openings top and bottom and it’s a no go. Go figure. I have 4K on my Telly and am embarking on a 5k trip with trailer. Opted to inspect and replace original filter with new Mobil 1 oil. Found a half dozen tiny metal shavings on filter from break in. Removed them with magnet and tweezers. I’ll change oil again upon return and ordered the proper filter for that. Photo attached.
Anyone else notice there is a lip and apparent mounting sites for another cover to completely close the engine compartment? Sure would like that. Further-I’m not comfortable calling the existing covers a “skid plate “... more like a dirt barrier, ahem. Cheers all-49C6E2EE-B03E-4D5F-B9BB-D965C4617663.webp

Quick addendum: 35NM = 25.8 lb-ft

I'm pretty sure the filter you have is correct. The openings are smaller but they push right in for a snug fit. You can see the same in the video posted by the starter of the thread (look at 7:06 in the video).

Ahh- that makes sense, thanks. I tried yet didn’t want to force it. I’ll try again when I have the backup part at next change.

Howdy,
Great video for the oil change.

Note;
2020 KIA Telluride
Lambda II 3.8 GDI ATK V-6
oil and filter change 6.87 US qts.

TYPE = ACEA A5 or above 5w-30 (API service SL, IL SAC GF-3, ACEA A3)

Oil Filter HYUNDAI/KIA 26320-3CKB0

27mm on oil cartridge cover (35nm torque spec = 25.8 lb-ft)
10mm for the lower engine cover bolts
FUMOTO drain valve F106SX fits and works

The Costco 5w-30 Full Synthetic meets the specs too.

Completed my first oil change today at about 3700 miles. I didn't get a chance to snap photos of the job, but the initial flow of the oil while draining was "mud-like" color.

Here are some details:
- Filled about 6.5 qts of Mobil1 Full Synthetic
- Installed KIA OEM Oil filter (26320-3CKB0)
- Installed Fumuto drain valve (F106SX)

Still planning on following the recommended intervals based on usage conditions (mine is currently at severe usage conditions)
DIY noob over here, and wow that drain valve seems like a game changer!!
Any reasons why I shouldn’t go for this?

...ummm...
-- because you don't want to save time changing your oil?
-- Don't want to spend $25-$30 for the part

Seriously...I think it's an easy decision if you plan on DIY

So...does that mean you're waiting 10 years to add the drain valve?

No 5 or 60K unless I don't see any negatives concerning Kia from those who have installed it. I plan to change my oil every six months because I will probably not reach the recommended 7500 miles intervals. So removing the drain plug every six months is not a concern for me.

Have you/do you use the Costco oil? The price is really attractive if it's a good oil to use. My main goal is to use an oil that helps prolong my engine life.

Has anyone tried this FRAM Extra Guard oil filter: EXTRA GUARD Full-Flow Lube Cartridge CH11934 | FRAM

Been using FRAM extra guard for our previous cars and seem to do pretty well.

---
Edit: I was wrong. I'be been using Ultra Guard from FRAM, but they don't appear to have Ultra Guard yet for the telluride. I guess I'll still with OEM for now....?

Yeah...considering that the OEM is about the same or even cheaper than that FRAM, I'd stick with the OEM for now.

My 21 S is going in to the dealer for its first oil change. Mileage is just over 6,000 miles at this point. My dealer contacted me about the oil change; I had intended to change the oil this weekend and was waiting for the filter kits I ordered off EBay to arrive. Well the oil filter kits arrived today and the Telly is off to the dealer for a “free” oil change. I have attached pics of the oil filter kit. These are OEM kits that were shipped from Daytona Kia in Daytona Beach, FL. I didn’t realize I was buying from them but that’s ok. I paid just over $10 a kit and got 4 kits so I’m set for awhile. I watched the video posted in the first post which was very helpful. Recommended if anyone is going to DIY oil changes. Plan on ordering the 27mm oil housing socket next.

So I panicked when I saw my engine oil was what appeared to be a half quart below the Low line on the dipstick. Turns out you are supposed to put it in and wait 3 seconds. Never have done that before on my Jeeps/Hondas/Fords/Acuras. Maybe it's the shape of the dipstick? Anybody else do this?

Also are there any go-to Kia dealerships with online stores for oil filters? My local Honda dealer's prices were much higher than a few rogue Honda dealerships that had great parts prices and decent shipping prices. Is everybody just getting them from your local Kia parts departments?

The dealer closest to me (10 miles) wants $9.30 for a filter kit, the one next closest (33 miles) wants $6.58.

So I know first hand prices vary greatly for filters locally. I'd gladly pay $6.58 , but not $9.30
