How to change the oil in your Kia Telluride

The dealer closest to me (10 miles) wants $9.30 for a filter kit, the one next closest (33 miles) wants $6.58.

So I know first hand prices vary greatly for filters locally. I'd gladly pay $6.58 , but not $9.30
Yeah, I’d rather pay shipping to the cheaper dealer, and buy a few of them to make the cost even out, than pay the dealer who’s marking them up that much.

Well, I'm good for the next 15,000 miles or so. Three oil changes with a full synthetic oil , Kia filters for about $75 total.

The Kia dealer with the lower price on filters is only about 5 miles from my closet Costco

I'm all for doing it yourself, I change the oil in my old 911 that uses 12 quarts of synthetic oil. Add some other items and you are looking at perhaps $50 to start. Any local import shop will ask for $150-200 for this that takes me 30 minutes so its a no brainer and I do it myself. The Kia on the other hand cost my $65 at the dealer for the oil change. Perhaps they have a deal going on but that was very inexpensive. Are other more concerned about the price, the dealership, or just like to lay under the car? For cars under warranty, I like that it is documented from a dealer.

I haven’t even checked the price at the local dealers yet. I just don’t trust them - too many bad experiences at dealers and mechanic shops. I have a trusted mom and pop mechanic shop for the things I can’t do, and they take care of timing belts and water pumps and bigger jobs but I’ve kept my cars a long time because I’ve done the work and have saved some money and maybe gained a little satisfaction in getting the work done.

I plan on changing my own oil so I can pull samples and send to Blackstone Labs for analysis. I got the first 7,500 done at the dealer because it was “free”.

It's all relative. I don't own an old 911, probably never will. I just sold the last vehicle I bought new, to a scraper guy, it was my 1996 Dodge Dakota Extended cab 4x4 V8, I think I paid around $20,000 for it new, only reason I got rid of it was the frame rusted through and wasn't safe to drive anymore. I get mad when my wife pays $90 to a quick oil change to do oil changes on my Chevy Cruze cars... I just paid $40,000 for a brand new Telluride, the most expensive vehicle I've ever bought in my life, and might be the last vehicle of that price that I ever buy.

I can change the oil in my Telluride in about 20 minutes in my garage, and it cost me $25 in parts/oil, for a full synthetic, that would likely last 10,000 miles, but I'll be changing ever 5,000 or less. Even by your dealer's $65 price, I'll save $40 an oil change, it will take me 20 minutes, where driving to the dealer, waiting for them to change the oil and the drive itself, would take me at least an hour of my day. I trust myself more than the guy at the dealer who's probably making $10 and hour... and I save enough to take my family out for a modest meal.

So, for me, it just doesn't make sense to go to a dealer to get my oil changed. All I need to do is keep my receipts and keep a log of my oil changes, which I can do pretty easily.

It's all relative

Yes its relative, I've been gouged by BMW, Audi, and Porsche shops for so long that I thought the KIA price was great. If you can't trust the dealer to do an oil change, what's going to happen when its something significant, especially with a 5 year warranty.

My tip to DIY oil changers... anti-seize could save you some damages that can occur if one of these bolts seize up and a person keeps trying to remove one... it can easily break the plastic pieces.

Good point 👍

I’m at the dealer now for first oil change. They ran out of Kia oil today so they are using Amsoil full syn. Including filter it’s $89 for them to do it. Talked to parts department and 7 quarts Amsoil full syn + filter, crush washer, and gaskets is $69. Seems like a good deal but I haven’t priced Amsoil out in the world yet. $20 for tire rotation also doesn’t seem bad

Seems like a fair trade off

I agree to a point, but the main difference is I have the choice whether to trust them or do it myself with an oil change. With a warranty item, odds are I wouldn’t have the tools, skills, or the time to do the repair.

Well fair point.

Here is a photo of the F106SX installed. I installed it at an angle for easy access but it doesn't really matter since the cover has to come off to get to the oil filter anyway.

Great pic, thanks! I tried the F106S with the 1/2" extender, but it wouldn't fit. After seeing your pic, I wish I had bought the F106SX instead!
