Latest info on ordering through KFOS

I’m rather new to the forums here so just wanting some advice from others who have already been down this road or know what to expect. The order was placed for our SX-P back in September. We’ve called to check in multiple times (especially this month when that was the original “guessed” arrival month) and as of the latest update this week, our dealer knows nothing and can’t tell us anything. We really have no paper proof of anything either other than a deposit. Is there something we should request to have order proof of at this point? Especially considering orders out there have the potential to be cancelled now from what I’m understanding. We’re just confused and really want to know what best questions to ask to get maybe a little more insight into all of this.
Ask for Request ID # from dealer. It will have date of when order was placed.

How does this affect the ability to cancel an order with a down payment? If a dealer has an order with a down payment that's cancelled, they can easily sell it to someone else. But with this system it seems like the dealer will be penalized because it'll seem like a fake order. Are we still able to cancel orders (if we find one sooner)?

That will be a dealer to dealer question... if a dealer can’t fulfill your order than I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to get your deposit back

Yeah, well you've never bought one that is in such demand. Most of us waited 4-6 months before getting our Tellurides... it's just the reality of the market. If you don't want to try to chase unsold inventory and possibly pay a markup, then order ASAP and wait it out. Just be sure to follow the instructions above - and find a dealer who can tell you how many orders are in front of you and how many allocations they have per month (you can double check on spreadsheet). Most all of us were frustrated at some point - but if you have the ability to wait it out, you won't be disappointed. Don't waste your time trying to find your exact preferred vehicle in stock and hoping for a test drive (it's probably a sold order anyway, and a good dealership wouldn't allow test driving sold orders - that'd be silly).

In spite of all this, the Telluride's monthly sales pace still puts it in 9th place in its class - because Kia just can't produce enough. When you talk about "mass-produced" - that's the Highlander and Pilot world - Highlander sells nearly 20,000 per month - more than 3x the Telluride. Pilot around 10,000 per month - nearly twice the Telluride. Ascent and Atlas also outsell Telluride. It's a white hot market in this size class. Add to that the accolades the Telluride has received and well you're in a brave new world with a brand new model.
What would be an acceptable dealer volume? Should it be 40 per month or 10? I could be way off.

Hi Stephen,
I too have been in search of an SXP White exterior with Dune Brown interior. Two questions...are you guys open tomorrow (Monday 20 Jan)?
Approximately how long would be my wait be if I went through your dealership. Im been on the fence trying to decide if I should order now and get on the “wait” bandwagon or hold off until the summer and purchase the 2nd generation🤔 I guess depending on ETA will assist in making that decision.
Thanks Much

You answered the same question from the same poster on January 5th! Then poster says they are talking with Fort Bend Kia in Houston after we told them to contact you! Now, they've wasted two weeks. How do you do it... :) Haha.

Happy Monday! Thank you so much jw_tx21 for following/keeping track of my forum posts. Also, Thank you for letting me know that I have “wasted two weeks” in the ordering process. I am so lucky that there are people like yourself, (who are on these forums), who selflessly gives up their time and provide such “insightful and helpful“ information...I’m sure you will continue to provide your unsolicited “invaluable” comments.
Sending wishes your way...that you too, will be as lucky as myself AND have people (just like yourself) provide you the same quality of facts.

You're welcome. One can only lead a horse to water...

BTW, that post wasn't directed at you. It was an observation. I replied a few weeks ago to another one of your posts.

Giddy up

Last night the general manager of my dealership called and said my order would be entered faster if we switched to AWD, because there are very few FWD allocations being given out in the Midwest. I'm wondering if that's the same experience for the other dealers here, or if he's just trying to upsell me.

He also mentioned that he is working with his Regional Distribution Manager (might have the wrong title there) to try and get my order allocated outside the normal process (something regarding "flex allocations", I think he said). I'm hoping this pulls through because I don't really have a need for AWD.

Definitely do not get AWD unless you need it. In addition, to costing $2,000.00 more ( I think?), your gas mileage will suffer for as long as you own the vehicle. (more weight). Plus there is one more thing that could go wrong in the future.

I would be fine with the cost if it was worth it, but I didn't know much about the benefits of it until I started researching it last night. I found basically what you said, and even though it snows here I have survived with my FWD until now so hopefully the dealer works something out.

This solves only part of the issue.

1) If a dealer has 50 allocations for SX-P, but only 2 a month get filled... you still have 48 people waiting and the list getting longer. While a dealer may get allocation for 10 EX in a month but only has 3 sold EX orders. So then he pops in 7 inventory orders for EX. Thus Kia is making inventory cars when people are continuing to wait with no end in sight. Why not just fill legit orders and clear them off?

2) Who is to say that Joe dealer doesn’t lie and say a car was ordered by Bob Smith? How do they know, I could fake up some BS order contract and say I got a receipt for a deposit.

To answer #2, when a new car is sold it has to be marked as an RDR (retail delivery), if the last name on the RDR doesn't match the name on the order Kia cracks down on the dealers other orders. Kia just issued an update in the ordering system warning dealers about this.

Thanks. If an order customer cancels or decides not to take delivery (and thus the car is sold to someone else), how does the dealership note this change? I assume there is a process so dealerships wouldn't be punished unnecessarily.

This is my situation.,. I hope there is a legit process to switch buyers!!

There isn't, which is why dealers in my area are not taking deposits or are doing non refundable. The build/order line literally has that customers name on it. People have cancelled so many orders when a similar vehicle becomes available many dealers have been punished. Non refundable is the only way to go from this point forward.

It's also more fair to the salespeople, spending an hour with someone only to have them cancel is stressful - an "S" Telluride is a "mini" $100 commission at many Kia Stores for example. Dealers have a "pack" they take out of the commissionable gross from salespeople, so imagine getting 25 percent of the $600 gross profit that's left after the dealer PACK. Even a full MSRP sale SX pays a salesperson around $450-500 around here, the salespeople aren't paid on the full invoice to MSRP, the dealer owners get their share too they cut out of the invoice to sticker margin (usually $400). A lot of local dealers don't even pay their salespeople commission on the market adjustment. It's one of the reasons Kia stores have young salespeople and high turnover, they allow so little margin from invoice to sticker making almost every deal a 'minimum commission deal" leaving experienced salespeople to go where they can make some money

I won't disagree with you on the portion a salesperson might get since I have no idea how they handle them, but there is absolutely no way that margin on Kia vehicles is that small. That might be what they tell you guys so you believe them. However when the average Kia on many dealers sites (non Telluride) is listed for $3k-8k or in some cases $10k or more under sticker, there is absolutely no way I'm buying that there's only $600 to work with in what a dealer is paying on a Telluride vs. MSRP. Dealers will say that all day long, about how they aren't making any money (poor them, can't possibly budge on price or their kids won't eat) but when you see a Sorento SX which is fairly loaded around $43.5k being listed on their site for $37k... you start smelling what they're stepping in if you know what I mean.

If the Telluride wasn't so hot right now, you'd be seeing the same... Even at the $5k off MSRP that is listed on these other vehicles, they're going downwards from there negotiation wise on many of them. All while still making a profit! So yes, see how I struggle with the dealer BS.
