• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Motor Oil

Kia’s 3.8 does not require synthetic, although it would be a shame not to protect your investment by using the best oil possible. As a few have already mentioned above I would highly recommend using a premium 5w30 synthetic oil I will personally be using Mobil 1 Extended protection as well as using the stock KIA 26230 3CKB0 oil filter. I will also be changing the oil and filter every 5,000 miles.

From what I remember the owner's manual does not have any break-in style oil changes, the first is at 7500 and at 7500mi intervals as well from then on. Doesn't really make any sense to change early. Synthetics too have been proven to easily still be working well 15k+ on most engines. Save your money and time and don't change so early.

The normal specified interval is 7,500 the severe usage interval is only 3,750

Severe service is defined as (see attached photo)

I live in a rural Ohio city and work in a metropolitan Ohio city where I personally meet more than one of these. My thought process is a happy medium between the standard service interval and the severe service interval.

Also, keep in mind the transmission fluid does NOT have a service interval under normal service but DOES require replacement under severe service (60,000 miles). This applies to virtually every other aspect of maintaining the vehicle as well.

While I hate spending more money than necessary, it isn't possible to change your oil too often. Nor is it possible to spend more on oil changes over the life of an engine than replacing an engine.

Thanks I didn't see that in the manual. That seems crazy, especially if using full synthetics. Might try and get some of my oil tested then to justify longer oil changes. I can't remember the last time I've done an oil change with so few miles on the oil.

I change my oil every 5K miles or 6 months. In my case it's every 2 months. For me it's peace of mind. You spent close to 40K or more on your toy, so spend a little to keep it well maintained, or spend more later to fix it.

My thoughts exactly. I work in the auto repair industry and have seen first hand how nasty interior engine components get even when following OEM maintenance schedules. What you spend on maintenance you will save in repair tenfold.

Hey peeps. Do you use the oil that Kia recommends when you go for an oil change? Or do you have a favorite?

Is there break-in oil that needs to be changed shortly after you first start driving the Telluride?
Im using the OEM synthetic, went for a 3500 miles drive to East coast and back all together in a week, no issues.

Anybody do there own oil change? I read you have to remove a pan underneath to get to filter? Too bad the oil filter wasn’t on the top like my sorento.... How much oil with filter did it take?????

7 quarts of oil.
And the little panel has like 8x 10mm bolts in it, I will be trimming my about an inch to not have to remove the panel ever again, yes it is that close for the drain plug to clear the panel.
Need a 27mm socket for the filter bowl, is a cartridge type.

Be aware! If you choose a longer oil/filter change interval than Kia requires, regardless of whether your oil test indicates it is reasonable, Kia will not honor the engine warranty if you ever need it. They will require you to provide your receipts for the oil and filters, as well as your maintenance log to support compliance with their requirements. The dates on those receipts will be reconciled to the data your Telluride is sending wirelessly, along with other data submitted whenever another service is completed, such as new tires, tire rotations, battery checks, etc.

Thank you. I have always done my own oil changes. I use mobile 1 extended performance in all my vehicles. I change between 7500 / 9000 miles never a problem! I use a OEM filter. I already purchased 4 filters! I will look into trimming the panel. Had to do that on a Nissan Pathfinder to get the filter off!

How about the Telluride oil filter? Same as for the Sorento? I like to do my own oil changes. Thx (we have an "S" on order).

Edit: Found the answer fairly deep into another topic in this forum. It's KIA #26320 3CKB0 for those also wondering.
And the same filter is used in the 2020 Hyundai Palisade which I just purchased.

I am a big fan of Mobil 1, the dealer gave me afree oil change @ 3k after that I will change the oil at 7,500 with Mobil1 5-30 and every 7,500 there after. Suggest you check dipstick with fresh oil, again @ 3k and again 5k and 7.5k. Use a white paper towel. See for yourself how dirty the oil gets. Toyota's burn real clean, could barely tell a difference at 5k in my highlander with the 3.5 ltr. and 108,000 miles.

You are best off changing your oil to synthetic after the first 5000 to 6000 km with synthetic oil and then every 10,000 km there after. end of discussion.

The Telluride is already on synthetic oil.
