In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... Rain possibly caused backup radar to engage safety automatic braking?

I'm just wondering if any Telluride owners have experienced a possible issue of hard rain causing our SUV's internal software/radar to react as if an object is present while reversing. I was traveling back home from New Jersey on Saturday when I decided to pull into a service station for lunch. After my brief highway break I noticed a storm outside was occuring producing heavy rain. I ran with my wife and kids from the exit of the building to our Telluride. It was a downpour, violent rain. After everyone, including myself, were settled in the SUV I started the engine and proceeded to reverse out of my parking space. An alarm flashed on the touchscreen and my Telluride automatically braked itself as I depressed the gas pedal. I looked at the screen and rear view mirror and there was nothing behind me. I tried reversing again. Same thing happened. I could not reverse the Telly out of the parking spot. I even got out of the SUV in the driving rain storm to make sure nothing (or no one) was underneath the rear bumper/tires. Everytime I put the Telluride in reverse the radar alert notification came on the monitor and the Telluride locked it's brakes automatically. I could not move. To say I was frustrated is an understatement. I came to the conclusion that the rain was causing the radar to malfunction. I tried the reverse process ten more times but couldn't reverse out. I even turned the SUV off multiple times trying to reset the system. Finally out of pure anger I put my Telluride's transmission into reverse and floored the gas which caused about 5 neck jerking episodes from me manually fighting with the Telluride's radar/computer. I finally made it out of my parking space probably looking like an idiot to anyone witnessing the event. What the hell is wrong with the radar on this SUV? I've never owned a car/truck that misread rain as a threat. Has this happened to anyone on here?

I didn't even think to do the obvious Mr. Mac. That being said this malfunction should never happen period. God forbid an emergency situation arises and a person needs to reverse their Telluride immediately out of harms way. It's a safety issue.

I appreciate your position and frustration with this.

However, as someone who had a minor rear end collision in the driving rain backing up a 2010 Camaro into another car backing up too, I will argue the greatest threat to safety is allowing your telluride to back up in those conditions without you choosing to turn that safety feature off.

I have had that happen to me one time — it’s simply the amount of water coming down obscuring the sensors in the rear bumper. Just disable the sensors temporarily by pressing the button on the console with the symbol on it that looks like P)))>

I have never seen anything in the marketing or in the manual for that matter about automatic emergency reverse braking - that is a feature that is touted on the Ascent, but not on the Telluride. In the manual starting on pages 5-123 it describes the rear collision avoidance system, which can apply braking if it detects something in the radar. Page 5-129 - says that the system may disable "when there is inclement weather such as heavy snow or rain" and a notification should appear on the instrument panel. Also says that there can turn off with "BCW" switch on the left driver side or on touch screen menu - under "Driver Assistance".

I think it would be good to describe the issue to your dealer/Kia to figure out what system is causing the braking in this case. When I read about the parking distance warning rear sensors it just says that they will beep / hold steady tone if they detect something in the rear of the car - and they are different from the RCCW/RCCA radar sensors according to the manual - it doesn't say the parking sensors interact with the RCCW/RCCA system - so turning them off might not solve the issue? Since the vehicle is not marketed with Automatic Reverse Braking - but apparently has it - an operator should clearly understand when it is active and know how to disable it.

You may have accidentally hit the AUTO HOLD button. Which is very easy to hit by accident.

Why would turning off Auto Hold affect this safety feature? You mean it could have been pressed by mistake instead of the parking sensor button? I don't think Auto Hold affects this issue.

I was mistaken about how to disable that feature and @jw_tx21 is correct that it is done through the Driver Assistance menu. Refer to pages 5-112 through 5-136 in the owner’s manual for more information about these systems (including the fact that heavy rain can interfere with proper operation).

I don't think I accidentally engaged the Auto Hold function. The Telluride would move then stop not hold strong as I pressed on the gas pedal.

It's a safety issue.

So you flooring the gas and getting angry was for safety? Or was your pride hurt that you never read the manual and got angry in public? Because it looks like you where more upset about how you look bad then anything?

Because I never got mad and angry about not understanding what the car is doing and floored the car for safety.

One time I accidentally hit the AUTO HOLD without realizing... when I was stationary in D and on the brakes. I let go, slowly hit the gas, it jerked forward but wouldn't go. I hit the gas harder, it jerked again and still wouldn't go. Then I put it into P then back into D hoping it would go away. It didn't.

Then I saw the AUTO HOLD was on.

Interesting! Auto hold is supposed to disable when the gas is pressed according to the manual - it's just supposed to allow the ability to take foot off brake pedal in certain situations.

I use auto hold every day and never had it do that. Sounds like a malfunction to me too. When i hit the gas, the brakes let go and off I go.

Ok Gwyn I get what you are saying. You are the coolest member on this forum.
