Exactly....your response is one that I hoped would show up! That's what's scary about the whole "UVO cloud sourced" concept.....when you tell the UVO app to start your car, the start signal is coming from THEIR server to your car. I much prefer a direct signal from my fob to the vehicle , less chance of a "hack". All of that said.....the only time I have remotely started any of my vehicles has been in the winter to warm 'em up and help get the Ice/snow moving off.....given the cost of getting a direct remote start system installed, I think I will go back to the "old school" method of just going out and starting it up!!
It really does not matter. If they want it, if they really want it, they can take it. Even if your car does not come with remote start, you would be surprised how many will start remotely.
You would be god smack how many cars that require a key can be started with out the key remotely. It is quite scary.
I was at a conference last year in which a Tesla was put up to be hacked. You opened it they would give you a discount on the car, you started it they would let you have it. The keys for the Tesla was not even in the same country. It opened started and drove off in under 20 minutes from the start of the competition. The actual attack took less then 30 seconds. And Tesla's' are considered hard to get into by most standards.
If you have any type of transmitter in your car that can receive a signal, you have a window cracked open. If you leave your vehicle out of your sight for 10 seconds, any good hacker can drive it away with out being in it. Not joking, they can just slip in place a fob on your obd 2 port and they then can start it up, and remote drive it away.
Almost all new cars can be remotely stopped now. Hackers can send a kill code to your car, then wait until you walk for help, pull up, open the door and drive off.
In terms of security, all car manufactures are playing with 2020 technology with 19th century security. They get away with it because hackers will only take x percentage of cars a year and most cars are covered by insurance.
One day in the future though, you could see a person wanting to rob a bank, hacking all cars in a 5 mile radius to crash into each other and then escaping by simply walking away. It is completely possible to do right now, just have to get someone that really wants to do it.
I was at defcon a few year ago. A guy that worked for a security agency set up a camera and wireless listening center at his work. With security experts. In 3 days he could start everyone car remotely, he made copy keys of all the keys on everyone key rings including car keys, including physical home keys, and even managed to get a copy of all the keys to his building.
How? Every time someone would take out their keys, the camera ai would lock on an take pictures. He would then index the key from the pictures to make a copy. The wireless listening station just recorded all the signals between fob and car. After 3 days he could copy their signal.
PS if you want to prevent anyone from taking a picture of your key ring, get key organizer and keep the teeth pointing in.
Once again, if they want to, they can. There is very little you can do about it.
