Summary of existing situation?

Hi folks,

I've been here for all of one day, thanks for having me.

I got a call from my boss the other day and learned that it's time for me to trade in my existing company car on a new company car. Joy! I know the car I want, a Telluride. Joy! Then I found out that purchasing a Telluride is currently the most complicated, convoluted, confusing purchase situation I've run into since buying my first home...bummer.

Is there a summary of the existing situation somewhere, as opposed to picking up bits and pieces by hours of scanning threads? I guess what I'm looking to find out is:

1) Is the prospect of acquiring a Telluride without paying more than over $1000 above MSRP, and without a long wait possible, or probable? If so, what's the best way to find one?
2) If the above is unlikely, is the best option to order a 2021?
3) If so, what is the average wait time? 4-5 months?

I'm pretty flexible. I'm fine with 2020 or 2021. I'm looking for an LX or an S. I like glacier gray, moss and sangria. I might even take white if it meant getting a car earlier. Tow package would be nice, but not an absolute necessity as I can add a hitch later. Basically looking to get a car within the next two months and not get ripped off. Is this possible / probable?

Thanks for any feedback. I'm happy to stick around and contribute and learn, it's just sort of an overwhelming situation and I appreciate any help. After all, I have a full time job, I can't put 50 hours into this.

You can certainly find an LX or an S. Use Telluride Lookup or TellyStats to search for recently produced trims at dealers near you and give them a call.

Watch dealer inventory section on this forum and jump on one when it becomes available. @StephenCantrelle recently posted about several incoming S models.

Also, keep in mind the LX doesn't have roof rails if that is important to you.

Donovan Castillo of Huffines Corinth posted about an available SX in the Dealer Inventory section this morning - probably already sold by now. They don't markup.

Good luck! You'll get lots of other advice I'm sure.

The best thing to do is call dealers.

The sites mentioned above are great, but they only show Tellurides after they've been produced, and in many cases that's already too late. In my experience, some dealers have visibility into what they're getting before they even show up as VINs on those sites. That was the case with my dealer & the unit I claimed from them (as well as many other units they told me about that aren't yet listed on those sites).

So - I would suggest looking up all of the dealers in a 100(?) mile radius of you and asking what they have coming in over the next couple months that's unclaimed. Because you're looking for LX or S, you'll probably have more luck finding some that are unsold.

Where are you located? Pricing seems geographic. At a high level, there are big markups on the coasts + Texas, but the midwest seems to have more dealers selling at MSRP. This is a broad generalization, and there are exceptions in each scenario. Use the search tool on the forum to look up your dealer's name and see if folks have discussed them.

Try contacting this dude. He legit isnt a sleaze trying to markup and has real answers on wait times. Dave- +1 (713) 597-5445

Great input so far from everyone, thank you!

I'm in Virginia but I'm very able to travel just about anywhere on the east coast, and as far west as Indiana. I'm quite flexible. Last night I sent out a handful of price requests to dealers and basically every response was a dead end. I'm really glad to hear that I can likely find something in LX or S trim, which is really all I want. I'd have a slight preference for S, I really like the Moss color.

shipping from MN To VA is only about $500-600.

It is very dealer dependent. The dealer in my area has two S AWD models right now. But they mark them up $8,000 over MSRP!

Call my dealer. Cleveland, OH burbs and prices at MSRP. He just told me "We have 1 LX FWD gray with black interior and we have about 5 S model AWD still available"

Quick question - on failcat, is the listed date the SHIP date or the ARRIVAL date? Thanks!

I wanted to order one but I have a trade in - ordering from far off complicates the trade-in issue. On failcat, one is showing with a date of 6/15/20, and it is also listed on the dealer's website with the same VIN, with a little note that says "in-transit". The dealer says I can come out now, do the deal, and then when the car arrives I can pick it up. I just thought it was a bit weird that that date would be 6/15, but that it is still in transit. Is this part of the "new normal" situation and likely legit? The dealer seems to have a good reputation and is selling at MSRP minus incentives.

Nevermind the above. I made a mistake, the VIN's a different. So all I have to go by is the fact that the dealer has the 2021 model I most want, on their website with an "in transit" note, and they say I can work the deal and that the car is on the way. They also say that they cannot know the arrival date for sure.

It's the date that failcat scraped it from KIA after the VIN was created. Nothing more, nothing less......

This sucks. I wish other automakers went to the Tesla sales model. This is a giant, convoluted, PITA process.

It's bad, but there were options for S models from dealers on this site. Keep working with them - at least they are honest. Or, you can go look for a Palisade.

trade in at carmax maybe, or at least get a quote?

I can actually respect shortages, and supply /demand issues. The thing that gets under my skin is that I'm up front on the phone and in email inquiries that I won't pay above MSRP. If they are going to elevate the price above MSRP, that's their right, but I simply won't be the buyer so please disregard my inquiry (and don't waste my time). Dealer agrees, say they will price at MSRP and then, behold, when purchase time comes around there is some excuse where now they have to add another $1000-2000. 15 texts and 6 phone calls worth of wasted time. It's an absurd and unethical business practice. I'm in sales and I NEVER, EVER do anything remotely like this to customers.

Yeah, a Palisade is looking more attractive. I'm bummed because this is the first car I've REALLY wanted in quite awhile . It's going to be a company car and my boss (the wallet on this deal) simply will not, on principle, be taken advantage of. He'll walk every time when there is a last second BS uncharge.

I'm definitely at a point where I'm giving up on something local and will deal with one of the dealers on the site, even though it puts me in a position where we will have to sell the (would-be) trade-in for cash, locally.

The other option is just to wait a couple months, will anything likely change by then?

Did you call Mike @ Halleen Kia (mentioned above)? Last I checked he had a few similar to what you were looking for.

Text conversation with Terre Haute Kia, Brad Davis:

Brad: "Well you're in luck. It just landed here today!"
Me: Nice, are you guys doing MSRP, or higher?
Brad: MSRP
Brad: unless you want the added safety system then it's $600 more than the MSRP.
Me: Which safety system? Interior protection package or something?
Brad: Pulse Braking
Brad: and spare tire
Brad: that $600 isn't going to make a difference on the monthly payment if that's what you're wondering. it'll be different by like a couple dollars.

I haven't responded. I guess they are "adding" a spare tire and "pulse breaking" for $600. This is utter BS, correct?
It's not even the money...
