• Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my SUV" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your leather interior, please post in the Interior section - and so on... what's your gas mileage so far?

🤖 AI Summary

No AI summary has been generated for this thread yet.
We recently drove from Bakersfield, CA to Napa, CA (~310 miles) and arrived in Napa with about 1/4 tank remaining. We were very pleased with that.

I just came back from Boston trip and I got like 25mpg with 30city/70hway mixed driving and 27mpg on highway only. I wish city mpg was better since that's what I'm mostly on. I average 20.x mpg in city.

Just a question to those who are posting gas mileage: is the computer calculated mileage similar to what the actual mileage is (as calculated by hand)?

The reason I ask is because our old Sorento's computer mileage was always much more "better" than what the actual was.

I'll certainly update my mileage as we drive more.

My 3 1/2 hour drive up to Provincetown, Cape Cod MA I got 30.7 MPG in my EX AWD w/ 20" S wheels averaging about 65 MPH. Those numbers are amazing!!! I'm getting almost as good fuel efficiency in my Telluride as I do in my 2015 Audi A3 convertible.

I keep track of my mileage using Fuelly app. The 25mpg I mentioned was same between Fuelly and onboard computer. 27mpg is computer only and is bound to go down now that I’m back home and will mostly be city miles until next gas up. If anything, my Rav4 hybrid has been consistently showing a lot higher mpg on onboard computer compared to actual (up to 5mpg). I find Telluride’s numbers a lot more trustworthy.

This past weekend, drove from NJ area to DC which is about 210 miles. Speed was anywhere from 55-80 (sometimes 85) and we averaged 27mpg. I have an EX and just two of us in the car. Pretty good. AC was blasting too. A lot better than my old minivan!

Just had my first gas fill, I had driven mixed city with lots of construction and some highway, hand calculated gas mileage.... my first 357 km since delivery used up 43.862 liters = 8.13 km/ liter... wow way better than my Sorento.... I’m very impressed.

Up front disclosure, someone will find this post sarcastic or antagonistic. It might be a tad sarcastic, especially the next sentence.. ;)

I guarantee one thing. If you purchase a Telluride and drive it, your gas mileage will be exactly what it is. No more, and no less.

It doesn't matter whether you calculate by hand or use the onboard computer, both will be inaccurate.

There are a number of things which impact fuel economy: altitude, driving downhill versus uphill, your driving behavior, wind direction, wind speed, stop-n-go versus free-flowing, type of road surface, your speed, acceleration rates, type of tires, depth of tire tread, total vehicle weight, time of day, ambient air temperature, type and viscosity of your engine oil, and so on.

Maybe this illustration will put things in perspective. Three scenarios at 15,000 miles per year at U.S. $2.50 ($2.499) gallon:

If you average 19 mpg, your annual fuel expense will be $1,973.00 or roughly $38.00 per week.
If you average 22 mpg, your annual fuel expense will be $1,705.00 ($268.00/year or $22.33/mth or $5.15/week less than @ 19 mpg average)
If you average 25 mpg, your annual fuel expense will be $1,500.00 ($473.00/year or $39.41/mth or $9.10/week less than @ 19 mpg average)

For anyone considering the purchase of a Telluride, if these expense levels for fuel is a financial concern for you, do not purchase any SUV capable of carrying up to 8 people and the ability to tow 5,000 lbs. Furthermore, be very glad the Telluride doesn't require premium fuel like many of its comparable luxury competition does. Your average fuel economy would be nearly identical, but you'll pay at least 15% more for premium gas

Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming....

@mrmac is entirely correct about the many factors that affect fuel mileage. Another point to consider in the discussion about manual calculation of fuel mileage vs. using the onboard computer is this: In order to run properly, the car’s engine must meter fuel very precisely. On the other hand, when one purchases gas, the pump cuts off when a small mechanical device in the nozzle detects a certain amount of back pressure. In this case, there are many variables that can alter fuel delivery — is the car level, how sensitive the back pressure device is set, how worn it is, etc., etc. I have seen fuel delivery vary by a gallon or more at pump cutoff. The only way to accurately measure using the manual method is to fill the tank all the way to the top of the filler neck each time, and this causes its own set of problems with the car’s vapor recovery system and other issues. As the miles driven is determined the same way by both methods, my money is on the computer’s accurate reading of fuel consumed. There is no prediction involved; it is simply calculating how much fuel is actually consumed during the miles driven.

By the way, I am averaging 23 mpg in my Telluride EX AWD with its 6 cyl. engine, vs. 19 mpg in my 2011 Sorento AWD with a 4 cyl. engine. Am I happy with the Telluride? Absolutely!

You need to have that 2011 checked. I had a 2013 LX AWD with the 2.4 also and got around 26 in it. Something is wrong to only get 19 in that thing.

So just to add, the on-board computer gave 8.47 km/liter, 8.14 hand calculated.

I’ve had it checked and it is what it is. Used to be a little higher, but at 180,000 miles, I’m not complaining

Wow! Something is definitely wrong there! Mine is 23-25 for daily driving going up to 28-29 for open highway driving.

Just came back from a trip. SC to Chicago, stopped half way in KY both ways and averaged 27 mpg.
