Bad Dealer Dealings - List Your Bad Dealer Experience

Howdy,
OK, after reading and watching what is going on all over the country with the Kia Telluride dealer pricing is kinda funny.
I have been watching and waiting for a while. OK, we call a KIA dealer in Northern Virginia, they said they were rolling off 2 new SX with Prestige package Tellurides. One dark moss, gray nappa interior, and a evelasting silver, black nappa interior.
Said they were just rolling off the truck, and not sold yet. OK, We said we would be right over. It really did just roll off the truck, still all plastic wrapped inside, and not even checked into the dealership yet.

BUT,

2020 Telluride SX w/Prestige, towing, Dark Moss, Gray Nappa Leather
sticker MSRP $46,495.00
inland freight $1045.00
total $47,540.00
Offered to me at $57,540.00
Said no, walked out.
Noticed a new for sale sign next to the sticker, saying $59,750
All kinds of add ons, and a market adj. +$ of like $8,995.00
Hope they choke on it.

More than 10k over MSRP? I thought some post up here about that going on was funny. I guess I am a little puzzled about that.

If anyone is wanting to pay $10k or more for it, they have a few there.

Yep, this is typical Kia dealer shenanigans. Essentially they want to sell to the highest bidders - especially SX Prestige models. They will probably sell those two for $5-8k over list within a few days.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I thought I was crazy for having all of these dealership issues but you all have confirmed to me that it normal for them to add ridiculous fees above and beyond the general 5 to 10K MSRP add on. I am going to let the dust settle for 6 months or so and see if the hysteria will normalize and then start shopping again. I still have this little thought in the back of my head on whether these vehicles are gonna hold their value reasonably well. The Toyota 4Runners hold their value really well but they are so outdated. I really only own vehicles that have enthusiast followings and have a decent resale market.

Yes, it's really odd that the 4runners hold their value so well - given the lack of electronics and modern amenities. But, now for 2020, Toyota is updating their interiors with electronics and jacking up the price even more - which will further help with resale value of the older models! I'm not so sure the Telluride will hold its value as much - especially with a first year model - but I could be wrong. Kia transmissions - if they are good - can go well into the 200,000 mile range without an issue. We shall see! If Kia can't produce enough to meet demand for a year or so, that will also help with resale. My concern is with QA issues with their current pace of production on this new model - we've heard of about 20 potential (and actual) catastrophic problems here on this forum - but Kia has sold approximately 30,000 Tellurides nationwide YTD, so it's hard to gauge the extent of any issues.

How is Kia corporate OK with so many of their dealers having a reputation for pulling this above-MSRP crap? I love my Telluride, but the dealer experience really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. No other consumer product sells above MSRP from the original seller. It's especially atrocious since we are a captive audience who can't buy a new Kia from anyone other than a dealer (competition among dealers doesn't count in my book).

Short term gain vs long term customers is always a bad business model. I hate to read about all the trials and tribulations that buyers are going through. I'm quite happy with my Palisade but since this is a Telluride forum I won't go there. Actually, overjoyed would be a better word.

Me too. I had to stay off the forums when we bought in late March because I was so upset at all the sketchy dealers I had talked to (and also at having to pay over MSRP from the dealer we went with in the end), but now that I read these horror stories I'm glad we bought when we did. We paid $1k over MSRP (which we offset even further with $1500 Kia cash), and I still bitched and moaned at our dealer who was advertising them at MSRP online then adding a $5k markup when you asked for details. I disagree with the dealer sales model in the first place, but that will take years and a lot of legislation to change.

Glad you're happy with your Palisade! I have yet to see one in the wild.

This happens all the time. See C-RV, Viper, Supra in the past. It is Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price after all. Nobody forces anyone buy anything

People still being stupid with their Money, throwing $$ into their depreciating asset and drowning in student debt..

Yes, it's their money and they can do whatever they want with it. But i'm like you no way paying over msrp.
Originally my dealer asked $2500 additional on top of msrp. i said have a nice day and walked out.
Very next day they called me and i got $1000 discount and $1500 Kia finance discount total of $2500 under msrp and purchased the car.
If people lining up and paying over msrp. i don't blame the dealers, people are the blame for this nonsense.
Also i realize too some people lease is up or whatever reason they have to replace their vehicle and they are set for Telluride and don't want a wait months, willing to pay little extra, very understandable.
Enjoy your new ride.

Very true, though I'd argue this is a mass-market car (not a limited edition) and regardless is treated unlike any other purchase people routinely make. You don't see Walmart or Best Buy charging above MSRP when a new gaming system gets released, no matter how constrained the supply is. Sure, you can pay a premium from a third-party (e.g. eBay), but no place that gets their product direct from the manufacturer is charging a premium. It's not like you can go outside the dealer system to buy a Kia. And cars aren't like real estate which tends to appreciate over time and of which there is only one unique item to be had.

It's more of a frustration with the system than anything, at least in my mind. Why should the dealer pocket extra cash just because Kia happened to decide to send them a car? If Kia were making that money, maybe I could see the point (they designed and built the popular product after all), but the dealer doesn't do anything other than exist as a middleman. Their work selling a Telluride is no different than selling a Sorrento, so why reward them differently? Just comes across like a money grab to me at the expense of the consumer and the brand's reputation. I hope someday the dealer model goes bust and you can just buy or order a car direct from Kia for the advertised price.

Getting back on topic, Southwest Kia in Austin (and with locations in Dallas and Rockwall) definitely endorses the "dealer adjustment" model, so I find them hard to recommend. Our sale was as agreed once we finally made a deal, but they dragged their feet and wouldn't commit to the deal until after closing time, telling me there were all kinds of people looking at it and hoping someone else would buy it off the floor at $5k over MSRP. It took us until 11 PM to get the deal done, and all the back and forth was incredibly annoying.

Archer Kia in Houston wanted to sell me a ton of mandatory add ons, saying they weren't sure if they could catch their tinting guy who tints the cars when they get dropped off and before the dealership opens (yeah right). Even more infuriating when you learn the Telluride comes tinted from the factory!

I've got more stories but most aren't worth telling. Pretty sure I called every Kia dealer in Texas and only have good things to say about a few (of course it was the ones who didn't have any Tellurides to sell).

This window tinting "appearance Care package", interior and exterior seems to be prevalent nationwide. It must be some sort of "incentive" package Kia has marketed to the dealers to enable the dealers to further market the T's and receive more $. Was told it was part of the sale, but they try to further sell you on additional add ons to the initial Appearance Care package.
Best thing to do is walk, they'll call you back and negotiate...

Man, I got a ride at 43.5k AWD SX with towing package. I also paid off our student debt in 4 years with zero assistance though. 🤣🤣🤣

I have been following the Telluride for acouple of months now and will buy one in August. I visited Southwest Kia in Dallas today and they are adding $10,000.00 to MSRP on EX Tellurides. I am sure the 5 Southwest dealerships will pay a severe price for their greediness. They claim they are getting it and currently have no inventory but they are taking deposits and orders at 10k over.
Only 10k over? They quoted me 13k over MSRP on on an SX prestige on Friday, and Patterson/VanGuard was 6500k over an SX. The sales manager was nice enough to note that some dealerships are making up to 10k+ over, so 6500 is hardly anything comparatively. 👎🏼

Was just reading article about car and student debt that will bring next crisis, that’s why I mentioned it. Obviously everyone knows their personal finances... I’m very conservative when it comes to $$

Oh man, I agree. I was just making a joke about the comment because maybe there was a correlation between my student debt a purchase price lol
